To think not many women have short hair

I know there will be posters on here who have, but just thinking of people I know in real life.
Thinking of a group of 7 friends I've had since school, not one of them has above shoulder length hair. One tried a pixie about a decade ago, but grew it straight out and none have ever had anything less than a very very long bob.
I vaguely know of 2 women with buzz cuts, which suit them, they're my partner's colleagues, but otherwise I know nobody.
Working across secondary schools, it's very very rare to see girls with short hair. Maybe 2 in the whole year group.
I may be wrong but I've never seen anybody on a show like Love Island with short hair, always flowing extensions.
I have it, but sometimes wonder if I'm considered more unattractive for it, not that it matters, I do it for me.
Does anybody else notice this?

In most jobs I go to, most women under 50/60 have long hair too.

Yes, it's just another trend really.

Short hair was very popular during the 80s and will no doubt make a comeback soon.

User280905 · 10/06/2022 17:33

I've got really short hair and I'm definitely in the minority. But lots of the women I know with long hair wear it in a ponytail most of the time anyway.
On the very rare occasions i go out i do find it harder to style my hair differently, it only has one style now.

People tell me I'm brave to have short hair, I'm never sure if that's meant as a compliment or not! Weird choice of word too, having a haircut is not particularly brave.

ElenaSt · 10/06/2022 17:34

I don't like short hair on women as a rule but a small minority of women look stunning with short hair.

Chynna Phillips in her 'Hold on for just one more day' video suits short hair as a young woman buy now she is older she looks better with long hair.

mosesisnotyourfriend · 10/06/2022 17:34

I want short hair, next time I get it cut I want it short. Unfortunately I don't like strolling though so it will have to fall miraculously how I want it

Zoooooom · 10/06/2022 17:34

I do sometimes find it sad that so many women feel they have to have long hair, i don't know why.
I've been called brave too! Over a bloody haircut

I was even called brave for getting a short bob! Hardly shaved it off

I've never had long hair, I've always kept it fairly short - you must only be looking at young women who all seem to me to have the same hairstyle. Try looking at the invisible generations of women, you'll see plenty of different styles of short hair there.

mosesisnotyourfriend · 10/06/2022 17:35

Styling not strolling!

mbosnz · 10/06/2022 17:35

I had short hair through most of the 00's, and the 10's. When covid hit, I'd not had a haircut in a year (couldn't be arsed, timing sucked, hadn't bonded with a hairdresser). Now I neither cut nor dye it. Tends to be tucked up in a clip in a bun. I like it. I like my silvers, too! My girls' hair goes up and down. Currently down.

LoveItOrListIt · 10/06/2022 17:36

I agree most have longer hair but in my group of 4 friends from school, 2 of us have long hair the other 2 have above the shoulder short hair (not like pixie or buzz cut or anything but definitely nape of neck on display short. Same in my school mum pals…it’s about 50:50. At work it’s 90% long I’d say, but then there are lots of young women in my work (under 30) and I can’t think of one of them with short hair.

GingeryLemons · 10/06/2022 17:37

My 10yo dd has very short hair, buzzed on one side with a sweeping fringe. She looks amazing, and more to the point, that's what she wanted and she loves it. It takes her seconds to brush, which was a huge consideration for her as well.

I don't really think much about other women's hair length, though I prefer a choppy bob for myself.

ClinicallyProven · 10/06/2022 17:38

I have short hair, but you're right we're in the minority, although actually in my world, where women are very serious about their sport and often holding down professional jobs, I think it's more common than it is in the general population. I couldn't live in a world where my hair took more than a few minutes a week 😆

That said, even professional sportswomen do seem to have long flowing locks. I'm afraid I think it's a reflection on the fact that, even in sport, more "glamourous" women will earn more money through sponsorship etc.

Men definitely prefer women with long hair.

My mother's generation all cut their hair very short after having kids. It was considered practical. Awful looking for most though, the Irish Mammy do.

Next generation all have at least shoulder length hair. And look way younger than our mothers did at the same age.

Piemam · 10/06/2022 17:39

I have really short hair and it garners comments and seems to be the exception of the females I know. But I never thought of it until I read this.

Beautifulmonster87 · 10/06/2022 17:40

Mainly because short hair looks more feminine I’d assume?! I love short hair cuts but had my thick hair cut short and it looked like a mushroom and I couldn’t maintain it.

TaranThePigKeeper · 10/06/2022 17:41

You’re dismissing all the women over 50 in your post, which is typically ageist. In my experience most women over about my age (50) have shorter hair. In my circle I am an anomaly for having very long hair.

So I don’t agree with your premise, no. ‘Most’ women don’t have long hair. But they might do in some age groups. Women do actually continue to exist even after 50, y’know.

Zoooooom · 10/06/2022 17:41

Always used to cringe on OLD when men would write "Don't usually like short hair on women but.."
I don't give a toss if you like it or not

Yes I came on to say this. Most women I see over 50 have short hair. Including me.

Zoooooom · 10/06/2022 17:42

You seem to have taken this very personally, nobody is being ageist at all

OP posts:
mosesisnotyourfriend · 10/06/2022 17:42

Why do over 50s have short hair anyway?

Zoooooom · 10/06/2022 17:42

I literally mentioned women over 50 in my second post but you must have missed it.

I work in a secondary school and v short hair on girls is not the norm. My DD is in y10 and has a buzz cut but the vast majority of her peers have long hair which they insist upon brushing during lessons.

There seems to be more variation in the boys' hair styles than the girls'.

It's the fashion though. Same as the hairdresser used to reach for her straighteners to make everything poker straight post cut and nowadays it's to give you a bit of a loose curl because everybody wants that same look.

Vapeyvapevape · 10/06/2022 17:44

I'm late 50's and have long hair because I like it not because I feel the need to have it.

notacooldad · 10/06/2022 17:46

I love my hair longer.j
The only thing is now that I'm old I have to make sure its shiny and in great condition all the time and cut to suit my features otherwise I'm in danger of looking like a witch.
