To think not many women have short hair

I know there will be posters on here who have, but just thinking of people I know in real life.
Thinking of a group of 7 friends I've had since school, not one of them has above shoulder length hair. One tried a pixie about a decade ago, but grew it straight out and none have ever had anything less than a very very long bob.
I vaguely know of 2 women with buzz cuts, which suit them, they're my partner's colleagues, but otherwise I know nobody.
Working across secondary schools, it's very very rare to see girls with short hair. Maybe 2 in the whole year group.
I may be wrong but I've never seen anybody on a show like Love Island with short hair, always flowing extensions.
I have it, but sometimes wonder if I'm considered more unattractive for it, not that it matters, I do it for me.
Does anybody else notice this?

My mother's generation all cut their hair very short after having kids. It was considered practical. Awful looking for most though, the Irish Mammy do.

Next generation all have at least shoulder length hair. And look way younger than our mothers did at the same age.

Totally agree @turkeyboots. Most Irish mammies had v short hair in 80s and 90s and they still have those cuts now as grannies! It's why I'll never cut my hair short

Crimeismymiddlename · 10/06/2022 19:19

In young women yes, but although I am the only women in my friend group to have shortish hair I do know lots of women with short hair. Personally I would love long hair as would be infinitely cheaper but it looks shocking on me, a combination of small face and very shit hair.

GrendelsGrandma · 10/06/2022 19:20

With all the time spent maintaining long hair and eradicating hair from the rest of the body, women could easily have taken over the world by now! Buzz cuts and bushes ftw

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 10/06/2022 19:20

Long hair is very easy to wash dry and style. Much easier than short.

My short hair gets a towel rub which determines whether I’m going for straight or curly, & possibly a wave of the hairbrush & that’s literally all it needs. By the time I’m dressed & ready to go, it’s dry. When I had my Grade 1 I didn’t own a hairbrush & I haven’t owned a hairdryer for years.

And I couldn’t care less whether blokes think it’s feminine.

ManateeFair · 10/06/2022 19:20

I’ve had short hair for years - shaved undercuts, pixies, 1920s bobs, the lot. But yes, long hair is the conventional/mainstream norm at the moment, definitely.

When I was at secondary school in the late 80s, loads and loads of girls had short haircuts. But my niece started secondary school around 2014/15 and she was literally one of only three girls there with short hair.

I’ve had long hair in the past but strangely I actually feel more feminine and prettier with it short. My DP much prefers it short too.

countbackfromten · 10/06/2022 19:23

I have short hair and have done for several years and love it. Stuff what anyone else thinks! Easier when I’m working stupidly long shifts and can get it all into a theatre cap easily. Best decision I made regarding my hair in a long time

I don't like short hair on women as a rule but a small minority of women look stunning with short hair.

Chynna Phillips in her 'Hold on for just one more day' video suits short hair as a young woman buy now she is older she looks better with long hair.

I'm surprised we can hear you from back there in the 1950's 😂
What a horribly old fashioned attitude.

ChairPose9to5 · 10/06/2022 19:25

I got my hair cut like this last year and it frees uphalf an hour a day

Not really. Totally depends on the style and hair type. I could do fuck-all with my hair when it was long apart from leaving it down or putting it in pony tail and it took approximately eighty million hours to dry. All the many short styles I’ve had have been a piece of cake. I’ve got a very short bob with a fringe at the moment and I can dry and style it (in any one of about five different ways) and it takes five minutes. When I had a pixie cut it was even quicker.

WonderingWanda · 10/06/2022 19:27

I have had short hair in the past and as long as I had time to wash and style it then it looked lovely. However, My hair is thick, needs layers in and left to it own devices when short sticks out at funny angles. For me longer hair that I can tie back is far easier to manage. Luckily it's reasonably straight and heavy when long so I don't bother straightening it because there's so much of it that it takes forever.

Bunchymcbunchface · 10/06/2022 19:28

I’ve had both over the years. But I’m actually too lazy for short hair and cba to style it. Plus for what I do I need a bun at times, so have to have a false one if I have short hair, which is an extra faff.
I had it cut into a short style in 2020 as I’d had a GA and found I lost a lot of hair )my hair is really fine too)
but I’ve since grown it back out.

everytime I’ve had it short, long seems to be the ‘in’ thing and I miss it.

HideousKinky · 10/06/2022 19:28

I have very thick curly hair and keep it short because if I try to grow it long it just grows outwards and I end up looking like the girl in Crystal Tipps & Alistair (British cartoon from the 70s for those of you too young to get the reference!)
I have found someone who cuts it very well and I can just wash & go, no styling or messing around, so it is very convenient

ChairPose9to5 · 10/06/2022 19:28

I had short hair sporadically over the years. I liked that i was reminding myself and others (if they cared) that i am more than my hair.

HydraWater · 10/06/2022 19:29

@AllAloneInThisHouse Unfortunately for me - I have very oval face/head shape, so with short hait (have had one) I just look like an egg with toupee on top of it. 😫

Oh that made me laugh, thanks for the image in my head! 😂

KittyKittyKat · 10/06/2022 19:29

Late 90’s I copied Gwyneth Paltrow’s short haircut from Sliding Doors. It looked awful whilst short and then took forever to get past that annoying bob. I looked so frumpy for the 2 years it took to grow out!! I’m considerably more attractive with long flowing locks. Will never cut my hair above my shoulders again!!

One of DH’s female friends recently cut her long chestnut hair into a bleach blonde Peter Pan cut. It looks so aging and she’s now pleasant to look at versus absolutely stunning before. I think she likes it, but wow it’s a massive change from a 9/10 to a 6.5/10.

GrumpyPanda · 10/06/2022 19:29

PetersRabbitt · 10/06/2022 18:37

That’s because short hair is harder work and needs styling. Long hair you can just brush, straighten or tie in a pony tail. Much easier!

Speak for yourself. Mine's short and I don't even brush it, just run my fingers through once and done. Wash once a week, apply some curly hair mousse, crunch it and air dry. Can't imagine ge posters with a pixie cut spend too much time on theirs either.

Diversion · 10/06/2022 19:30

I have short hair which I have kept short for 30 years or so. It is shaved at the back and usually either platinum, purple or something in between. I really couldn't be doing with long hair and all of that faffing around. I would have a buzz cut all over, but sadly I just don't have the cheek bones!

ChairPose9to5 · 10/06/2022 19:30

Ha ha @HideousKinky i used to look at jonathan creek and think, that's my hair if im caught in the rain.

I love it now. If it rains, i shrug 😀

ChairPose9to5 · 10/06/2022 19:32

@KittyKittyKat omg are you rating women out of ten🙉

BellePeppa · 10/06/2022 19:34

I’m a ‘boomer’ and have mostly had long hair (my ex used to make a point that only long hair was attractive, which I thought was ridiculous). A couple of years ago it was even waist length. It’s been bra strap length for a while now and I have just had it cut so it touches my shoulders and I love it.

TwoDogs9 · 10/06/2022 19:35

I’ve had short hair in the past but always find it such high maintenance. It has to be styled each day and cut regularly. At least with long hair you can stick it in a ponytail and go for months without getting it cut (well I do anyway!).

WildOnce · 10/06/2022 19:36

I’ve pretty much always had a bob somewhere between my shoulders and just below my chin but yes, most women seem to have long hair. My hair is very thick and a faff long. I also have a wide face and need volume for definitely look better with shorter hair. Also blonde so dislike the long blonde hair look- not very ‘me’.

I don’t really like long hair - often find it a bit boring and feel like many women have it for the sake of having long hair and shorter would suit them better. I love a cute messy bob.

Men definitely prefer long and ive had many comments along those lines, which have always made me go shorter.

whumpthereitis · 10/06/2022 19:37

Shaved my head once after a bad dye job. Looked a bit like Khrushchev. Never again on that one, don’t have the head shape for it. I don’t like how short hair looks on me (and I did try in vain to make it presentable), so it’s staying long.

KittyKittyKat · 10/06/2022 19:39

@ChairPose9to5 yup. Happy to rate myself too for a fun comparison 😂 8.5 now but definitely a 6 when I had nearly no hair!! 😂

Gosh poor you having to glance in her general direction and having the disadvantage of a 6.5 out of 10 in your eyeline. Confused

Why are women such utter cunts to each other?
