To think not many women have short hair

I know there will be posters on here who have, but just thinking of people I know in real life.
Thinking of a group of 7 friends I've had since school, not one of them has above shoulder length hair. One tried a pixie about a decade ago, but grew it straight out and none have ever had anything less than a very very long bob.
I vaguely know of 2 women with buzz cuts, which suit them, they're my partner's colleagues, but otherwise I know nobody.
Working across secondary schools, it's very very rare to see girls with short hair. Maybe 2 in the whole year group.
I may be wrong but I've never seen anybody on a show like Love Island with short hair, always flowing extensions.
I have it, but sometimes wonder if I'm considered more unattractive for it, not that it matters, I do it for me.
Does anybody else notice this?

I would disagree with that. I have it cut short and can go months without getting it cut. When it’s time for a cut get it cut short again.

Depends how short, really? When I had it very short (think Annie Lennox) it needed cutting once a month. Styling was quite easy though, with gel and stuff.

I think bob styles are the trickiest for maintenance, they always need blow drying to look good and are too short for a pony tail. Go out in the rain and they look rubbish.

Oh yes we do. And some of us have our own, real eyebrows.

I’ve never got the thing with eyebrow threading or plucking or whatever. Doesn’t it hurt??? As for the fashions for shaving here, there & everywhere….

You’re dismissing all the women over 50 in your post, which is typically ageist. In my experience most women over about my age (50) have shorter hair. In my circle I am an anomaly for having very long hair.

So I don’t agree with your premise, no. ‘Most’ women don’t have long hair. But they might do in some age groups. Women do actually continue to exist even after 50, y’know.

THIS, thank you
And as for 'men prefer it' ', they can jog on.
Person with by far the longest hair in my extended family? My 33 year old. Son.

I've had short hair for years, it's me and it suits me better than long hair did. I couldn't give a stuff about what men prefer. Psst, I am also going grey and will not be dying it. I quite like my Mallen streak

Well, if you don't mind it growing out and losing the style then yes. I was talking more about things like pixie cuts. People often tell me I'd suit one, or a short bob, but those haircuts need a lot of maintenance. Wax, styling, regular trims. I couldn't be arsed.

AnnieSnap · 13/06/2022 01:47

I’m in my 60s and have short hair. I have actually had very short hair most of the time since my mid 30s. From time to time, I have grown it, but I never feel like me with longer hair.

garlictwist · 13/06/2022 06:23

Short hair is actually higher maintenance. When I had a short hair I had to dry it and style it to make it look OK, now it's long I can just leave it to dry naturally or tie it up.

ImAvingOops · 13/06/2022 06:41

Both short and long hair can look really good or really bad, depending on who has it and how much care they put into it. Long hair which is thin and straggly is not the same as long hair which is full and shiny and cut properly so there are no raggedy ends! Short hair in a style that suits the wearer and regularly trimmed is not the same as those which look like someone's gone at it with garden clippers because the woman has just given up and cba!

And obviously how hair looks isn't an isolated thing - it looks good or bad in conjunction with how a person dresses, whether the particular style suits their face. Not everyone can carry off the same look.

QuandaleDingle · 13/06/2022 06:43

I have name changed because I have short hair and LOVE it. I could not give one flying fuck if men don't like it. I like it and that's the only thing that matters. I've had it short on and off since 17. I've never felt like me when I've grown it. Here's some from over the last few years - sometimes I've even had an undercut

And some more (even got married with short hair, shock horror 😆)

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 13/06/2022 06:55

I have a very narrow face and very fine hair, and it definitely looks best in a chin length bob. Since my teens I have had it short, then grown it long, then cut it all off, then grown it long but keep coming back to the chin length bob. I'm 43 now and won't grow it again - the menopause has made it thinner than ever and I need all the volume I can get. If I'd purely been going on what looks best for me, I'd never have grown it, but long hair is definitely more versatile than short, and I used to like doing different styles.

DD (18), has always had really long hair. She's in a minority in her particular friendship group, but they're a very alternative group and don't like to follow the crowd on the whole. Most of the girls in her year group have long hair.

SuziSecondLaw · 11/06/2022 10:27

I hate to say it, but men in general definitely prefer long hair.. So I'm sure that plays a part in it - sorry 🤐

I've said this before in other threads, but the difference in reaction I get from random men in the street when I have my hair down versus up is massive. So as with all the other stereotypical things (big boobs, slim, young) they're preferred by the majority of 'vocal' men that's for sure. But who wants one of those cat calling wolf whistling white van men anyway?! I certainly don't.

My dp loves my hair, and I like the styling options with long hair, but honestly if I was with someone who preferred short hair, I'd definitely try it short because I've always been curious!

Maybe the men who aren't that comfortable with their masculinity that they need a very feminine woman by their side. But I wouldn't say its a majority. Men and women have personal preferences of course but i can't imagine there is such a strong trend.
I have always had short hair (since age 11). I'm not a stunner but never had any issue getting the men i liked. All the women in my family are the same. I am sure some men like long hair. Some men like short hair. Some men just like the person in front of them.
Thinking about it ive never had any strong views about my men's haircut so not sure why men would? I absolutely wouldn't mind a man with long hair if it suited them (some it does and some it doesn't). It's just hair!

Covetthee · 13/06/2022 07:15

God even a thread about hair people are being so defensive as usual on MN 🤣

Some hair styles are just not flattering on certain face shapes, now that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t cut their hair the way they want, but your face shape really does affect how you look with certain styles.

i think shorter hair is high maintenance and most women don’t have time for it these days. You would need to cut it regularly to keep the style. I also think you need to have a good head of hair for shorter styles. my hair is so thin that no short style would look good as it doesn’t really hold. The shortest i can go is a long bob.

HouseofHolbein · 13/06/2022 07:15

I've always had short hair. It's very curly and fine so when I did grow it out I tied it up as soon as I could to make it look tidy.

Start of first lockdown I gave myself a grade 2 to see what it looked like. Still have the same now 😊 husband clippers my hair when it needs doing.

I get loads of compliments on it. Also some 'brave' comments and occasionally get called young man at work 🤣🤣 at 52 I take the young as a compliment and ignore the rest 🤣🤣

I like it and I don't give a shit if others don't.

I have 4 daughters and 2 of them have had occasional buzz cuts and none of them have hair past their shoulders ever. I have been happy for them to do anything they like with their hair because it grows back 🤷‍♀️ but I think that's unusual in their age group

becausetrampslikeus · 13/06/2022 08:07

Face shapes and ideas of flattering are mostly a fashion/ culture observation - that's why things considered flattering in the times of Elizabeth 1 are not considered so today

Further Short hair isn't just one style - there is highly likely to be a short style for everyone

Neither does short hair have to be high maintenance- again it's just a cultural thing that women are expected to signal their attention to appearance by choosing high maintenance hairstyles in fact by choosing a style as opposed to a tidy cut

garlictwist · 13/06/2022 06:23

Short hair is actually higher maintenance. When I had a short hair I had to dry it and style it to make it look OK, now it's long I can just leave it to dry naturally or tie it up.

That’s what I do with short hair. It doesn’t even need combing, just fingers run through it. The amount of time spent detangling my very thick hair when it was long was far more. I won’t be having it long again, it doesn’t suit my look and I haven’t got time.

Fairislefandango · 13/06/2022 08:26

It depends what kind of hair you have. I have very fine, thin, dead straight hair. It looks best short, but only if I use product and blow dry it. Otherwise it lies thin and flat as if it is plastered to my head. When it's longish I blast it quickly with the hairdryer upside down and tie it back. Much quicker, but still looks thinner than short and blowdried.

Mine isn't. I don't need to comb it or run my fingers through it or anything. When it gets to the point of sticking up after a shower the clippers come out again.

Divebar2021 · 13/06/2022 09:57

My particular short hair is higher maintenance from the view point of cuts but on a day to day basis definitely isn’t. When I had longer hair I would need an airbrush or tongs etc to make it look half decent which probably took 30-40 minutes daily. I also looked shit with it tied back. I wouldn’t say those “Princess-y” long long styles with the same balayage and wave are low maintenance exactly either

Divebar2021 · 13/06/2022 10:04

when fashions change we’re going to be left with a whole swathe of hairdressers who won’t know how to cut and won’t be able to hide behind the “beachy waves” they’re so fond of. It’s definitely worth looking at the social media to see what they’re up to. One with diversity. One without diversity.

If long hair was really more practical, more men would have it. See also high heels, skirts, painted nails, hairfree legs....all these things we've be conditioned to see as feminine, which hoover up time and hinder our movement.

In my experience women with short hair are either older women or women who have a cool, edgy style. I think it's quite difficult to pull off. I would certainly look like a potato.

I’m older and have a cool, edgy style 😉

Thank you ! I love it

I can't imagine having long hair now. plus my hair is quite thin and crappy since getting into my 40s so would prob look awful long anyway
