To think not many women have short hair

I know there will be posters on here who have, but just thinking of people I know in real life.
Thinking of a group of 7 friends I've had since school, not one of them has above shoulder length hair. One tried a pixie about a decade ago, but grew it straight out and none have ever had anything less than a very very long bob.
I vaguely know of 2 women with buzz cuts, which suit them, they're my partner's colleagues, but otherwise I know nobody.
Working across secondary schools, it's very very rare to see girls with short hair. Maybe 2 in the whole year group.
I may be wrong but I've never seen anybody on a show like Love Island with short hair, always flowing extensions.
I have it, but sometimes wonder if I'm considered more unattractive for it, not that it matters, I do it for me.
Does anybody else notice this?

I got a much shorter stylecat 51. I felt id held out long enough. My hair is v thick and took ages to dry. This works much better for me but i kept my hair long for decades believing that it would age me overnight to go short. But in fact i think/feel more in charge of my own look now. Like it's a more unusual look that i chose. Its not super short though. Just like a short mullet which on me, goes curly and looks 70s.

Antarcticant · 10/06/2022 18:54

Funny how no one ever trots this bollocks out for mens hair styles

They should do. There are a few exceptions but most men look much better with long hair in my opinion!

Davros · 10/06/2022 18:55

Many women over 60 have shortish hair ime. Maybe it's their generation rather than age or the fact that I swim regularly!. I think it's really boring that young(er) women mostly have long hair. When I was young in the 70s/80s we had hairstyles, we didn't stick with the same thing, we changed the colour, the shape, the cut, anything we could. Most of us enjoyed the variety, excitement, experimentation, even the dreaded perm!

That’s because short hair is harder work and needs styling. Long hair you can just brush, straighten or tie in a pony tail. Much easier!

Absolute nonsense. Because of my sport I wash my hair up to three times a day. It takes seconds to style.

OceanbreezeSun · 10/06/2022 18:58

My older sister had a pixie cut for years, she’s got petite features with huge eyes, always looked amazing on her. My mum also had quite a short cut for a few years and she looked stunning too. Cheekbones like razors!

I’ve always had long hair - I had it cut into a chin length bob a few years ago and really didn’t like it. I love having long hair too much. I like the ‘flowiness’ of it and being able to do different things with it.

AlisonDonut · 10/06/2022 19:00

I'm in France at an evening event and there are about 100 people, so around 50 women.

3 have long hair

Half the rest have shoulder length

The rest of us have very short hair.

What's French for 'this judgemental woman on Mumsnet thinks most of you are wearing you lady hair in a short unflattering manner, please sort it out'?

I do sometimes find it sad that so many women feel they have to have long hair, i don't know why.
I've been called brave too! Over a bloody haircut

If you saw what I look like with short hair then you'd know why it's brave - I look like Shrek. It suits some women, it doesn't suit others. Each to their own but I look truly, truly awful with short hair.

worraliberty · 10/06/2022 17:31

Yes, it's just another trend really.

Short hair was very popular during the 80s and will no doubt make a comeback soon.

Yeah, I was thinking about this recently. I had really short hair back in the 80s when I was in my early 20s. I don't think it's been particularly in fashion since, though I did work with a woman about 7-8 years ago who had short hair, and she was absolutely stunning. (TBH I think she'd have been stunning whatever the hair). She was perhaps in her 30s.

I don't think I'd have it that short at my current age (50s) since it would put more attention on my face, which is no longer smooth and fresh!

ClinicallyProven · 10/06/2022 19:01

Im(h)o most people with long hair look awful. Really good, thick, swishy and blow dried long hair looks great, but that's not what most people have and they'd benefit from hair that's really lownl maintenance, rather than thinking their hair is low maintenance because they can put it in a messy bun.

That said, please stop caring. Live your life. I have a friend who has to schedule her social life around when her (amazing) hair needs washing. That's no way to live.

I have short hair now at 42.blonde.I feel like Doris Day and Robyn and Pink. Much more me and sexy than I ever felt with long hair.

One of my colleagues has very short hair following chemo. She has taken repeated abuse over it, from total strangers in the street.

It seems Joe Public doesn't appreciate very short hair on women.

Spacie · 10/06/2022 17:50

Why do over 50s have short hair anyway?

Because it was fashionable when we were 20.

And it does get a lot thinner after the menopause.

Aah I see. I didn’t realise that about after the menopause so that’s good to know.

ThinWomansBrain · 10/06/2022 19:04

Half of mine is shaved, the other half graduates to shoulder length, or below when its not bounced up into curls.
i like both halves.

BeggyMitchell · 10/06/2022 19:05

L*ong hair is very easy to wash dry and style. Much easier than short.

Wow. Speak for yourself! I have long very thick curly hair that I have to subdue into sleek straight hair (as that's my preference). And honestly the only time I my truly happy with it is when my hairdresser does it. So I go once a week.

Just starting to get the odd grey now & seriously thinking about not bothering to cover them up as it will be £££

Yes, they all seem to turn into similar looking Mr Potato Heads when they hit 45. The ones with decent hair really stand out.

Staffy1 · 10/06/2022 19:06

I see more women with short hair than long hair, but I suppose it depends on the age group.

TheGoogleMum · 10/06/2022 19:09

I feel like there's a few women I know in their 60s who have pixie cut (they tend to be the ones that have had their hair like that as long as I can remember knowing them)

Grin I wouldn’t say “lady hair”, it sounds a bit rude.

It's mostly a British crowd, they would laugh.

PaperMonster · 10/06/2022 19:11

I have short hair but not through choice - just doesn’t grow much!!

BitOutOfPractice · 10/06/2022 19:15

I'm British but have spent a LOT of time in Holland and a lot of women there have short hair. Over a certain age - don't know what it is before I get jumped on - it's a majority with short hair

HydraWater · 10/06/2022 19:17

I don't mean to offend anyone, but seriously most young women, girls, middle agers, hell most Adult Human Females have long, straightish hair, parted to the side, maybe a few extensions, a bit of a curl, but they ALL look the bloody same to me.

Of course I am different. Older, with a shoulder length well cut bob of very fine hair after an illness. But the way it's cut if I put a few of those self stick roller thinggys in it, it just bounces and I feel great! Otherwise I put it in a clip for day to day wear. That was non negotiable in the hairdressers. Short enough not to be long, but long enough not to be too short to be able to clip it up. So easy to maintain.

Anyway I do hope the long hair clone fad goes sometime soon. I was at a relative's wedding recently and every single one of her late twenty something girlfriends had long hair, parted at the side. All blonde too BTW. I thought I was seeing things and I hadn't even had a drink!

Shangrila · 10/06/2022 19:17

Well it would be boring if everyone looked the same. Like scrolling through instagram in real life.

AllAloneInThisHouse · 10/06/2022 19:18

I like women with short hair.
Especially if it more ’masculine’ cut, buzz at the bottom…

Unfortunately for me - I have very oval face/head shape, so with short hait (have had one) I just look like an egg with toupee on top of it. 😫
