To think not many women have short hair

I know there will be posters on here who have, but just thinking of people I know in real life.
Thinking of a group of 7 friends I've had since school, not one of them has above shoulder length hair. One tried a pixie about a decade ago, but grew it straight out and none have ever had anything less than a very very long bob.
I vaguely know of 2 women with buzz cuts, which suit them, they're my partner's colleagues, but otherwise I know nobody.
Working across secondary schools, it's very very rare to see girls with short hair. Maybe 2 in the whole year group.
I may be wrong but I've never seen anybody on a show like Love Island with short hair, always flowing extensions.
I have it, but sometimes wonder if I'm considered more unattractive for it, not that it matters, I do it for me.
Does anybody else notice this?

Long hair is actually lower maintenance for a lot of people. Mine is very long, mainly because I can't be bothered to go to the hairdresser. I sometimes even cut it myself.

Arnaquer · 10/06/2022 18:21

I've had short hair more than long hair and I love it short, I feel it makes me stand out when it's short.
It's more stylish.
Most women with long hair don't do a lot with it apart from scrape it back into a ponytail.
It's rather dull. I like to change my hair colour and style in a regular basis.
I think younger women look cool with short hair cuts and always want to high 5 them for being a bit different to the 'love island' look that is everywhere

Spanielsarepainless · 10/06/2022 18:22

Mine has been short for the last forty years. It takes me under ten minutes to wash and dry it. I get a good cut every six weeks. Amongst my circle of close friends, only one has hair below her shoulders. I couldn't be bothered with the faff of long hair and I am out in all weathers.

dinglethedragon · 10/06/2022 18:22

mine's been short for over 30yrs - during lockdown I just took the dog clippers to it and had a buzz cut all over - it felt fantastic 🤣. All my dd's and their friends seem to have long hair - so much faffing around, I can't even bear the feel of it on my neck these days, LOVE it short.

As a rule short hair isn’t as flattering on face shapes or as forgiving as long hair. To have short hair and carry it off well you have to have good bone structure and smaller features. I would look awful with short hair. I like my longer hair .

See this sort of bollcoks is what destroys the confidence of women. Who gives a shit what you think of their 'flatteringness'?

Kanaloa · 10/06/2022 18:23

I have short hair, so does one of my daughters. My other girl has long hair. It’s just different trends/fashions - I quite often see girls with buzz cuts though and I used to have one myself. Just awful to grow out.

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/06/2022 18:24

Yep, a friend of mine was casting a show set in the 70s or 80s - it was incredibly hard to get enough female extras with short hair.

I think in the last couple years I’m seeing a bit more short hair, same as curly hair, its come back.

I don’t think it will ever be as varied as the 70s and 80s though. Possibly because men and women’s lifestyles have shifted closer, we seem to look to flag up sex differences.

Zoooooom · 10/06/2022 17:57

For whatever reason you've really over thought this and taken huge offence where there's none to be taken, but that's your own viewpoint I guess

Maybe it’s overthinking, but it’s important thinking. And if we want women’s lives to improve, it’s something we should be aware of. Sorry if I’ve offended you, though.

Kanaloa · 10/06/2022 18:27

Although I will say the pixie I have right now can be a bit high maintenance. If I skip a cut it grows into this horrible mullet thing. When I had longer hair this wasn’t so noticeable. But it’s low maintenance in daily washing/styling etc so balances out.

Speak for yourself, I had a pixie cut years ago, I don't have small features and I looked bloody amazing 🤣
I agree that this sort of comment makes women think twice about having their hair how they want it just in case someone else doesn't like it .

That's honestly a horrific sounding amount of effort to me. Every six weeks? I'd genuinely hate that. I last went to the hairdressers in 2017.

BorgQueen · 10/06/2022 18:32

Every Woman I know over the age of 50 has short hair, I’ve got really short hair, I’ve only ever grown my hair once (in my early 30’s) and I’m 55. Every Woman I know in the 25-40 age group has mid-long hair.

Babdoc · 10/06/2022 18:36

DD is in her early 30s and has a v close cropped haircut. Her hair is black, and she looks like Servalan from Blake’s Seven (for anyone old enough to remember that series!). It really suits her, and she actually went costumed to a sci fi convention and was instantly identified as the character!

I keep my hair v short and naturally silver, as it was practical for my hospital work and patients were reassured that a silver haired doctor was probably senior and experienced! Retired now, but it’s still great to just wash it, towel dry and be good to go after a 30 second brush.

PetersRabbitt · 10/06/2022 18:37

That’s because short hair is harder work and needs styling. Long hair you can just brush, straighten or tie in a pony tail. Much easier!

BeggyMitchell · 10/06/2022 18:39

Nah, loads of them do, mainly in their 70s + though

lightisnotwhite · 10/06/2022 18:39

I think short hair will become popular once people can’t afford hairdressers. It will be a sign of wealth.
Long hair is very easy to wash dry and style. Much easier than short. However it takes a lot of hair dye so really it’s grey/silver or a massive budget and time past 55.

What a load of rubbish. What looks good or 'flattering' is a matter of opinion. These blanket statements about things that 'age' women or 'flatter' them are so irritating.

maeveiscurious · 10/06/2022 18:44

I lost my hair last year and it's back and short curly and in very good condition. I'm getting used to it as I wasn't sure it was coming back at all.

Statement earrings are a thing now

Fizbosshoes · 10/06/2022 18:46

When I think about my own childhood (in 1980s/90s) my own mum and most of my friends mums had short hair and they would have been in their 30s and 40s at the time.

lurchermummy · 10/06/2022 18:46

I have short hair. It's the only style that suits me.

honeylulu · 10/06/2022 18:46

I agree with the posters who said:
It's the current fashion to have longer hair. (I experimented with short hair in the 80s because everybody did - it looked bloody awful on me. I looked like an ugly footballer.)
Also that longer hair is often more flattering, especially for those of us not blessed with symmetrical features. I agree it shouldn't matter what other people think but I for one prefer a longer style that seems to slim my broad face and distract from my large nose!

It isn't for everyone. My daughter has a very short bob and it suits her perfectly, she loves it and it's so much more practical for her active lifestyle. My son has much longer hair than her and his style really suits him too (similar face to me). I hope younger people will continue to go for what suits them/ what they like rather than blindly following fashion. My mum has had short permed hair all my life as did most of her contemporaries. She thinks mums with long hair (like me) are vain and want men to look at them !

Naw, I just wash it sometime
Cut myself also

It's not more expensive and it doesn't need more effort to look fine

Funny how no one ever trots this bollocks out for mens hair styles.

’Oooo Nige, sorry love, you are a bit too fat for short hair’.

’Have you seen Terry? Buzzed his hair off. Must be having some sort of breakdown. Doesn’t he care that we won’t find him attractive?

I always get the ‘knowing’ nod from other women with buzzed hair (no, not because we are lesbians). The freedom to just ‘be’, with no faff or attempts to hide our own faces.

Besides, hair isn’t magic. It doesn’t hide those extra pounds or what your face looks like. Have it how you like it. Some women genuinely prefer their hair long, but if you really couldn’t give a toss about styling/brushing/faff, hate it round your face and just scrape it back all day every day anyway, buzz it 😁

Zerrin13 · 10/06/2022 18:48

I'm 56 and mine is nearly shoulder length as I've been growing it. I like doing different things with it. I can straighten it or curl it or have a bouncy blow dry. I'm not ever going short. I dont think it woukd suit me as I have chubby cheeks

angieloumc · 10/06/2022 18:50

I'm 52 and have always had long hair. After lockdown I had it cut just above where my bra lays as it had done my head in not getting it cut. Most women my age that I know do have shorter hair, apart from, funnily enough, my hair stylist and my sister who at 49 has it nearly to her waist.
My DD 17 has long hair too, though she often gives the ends a curl after straightening.
I think women should have their hair however they want, never mind what men think. My late mum always had short hair, though she had amazing bone structure which appears to have evaded me, my sister and DD!
