One of our customers came in last week and as he was waiting for his order we got chatting and it turns out he is an amazing opera singer. Looking at him you'd never think it. Think older gent, builder type.

Over the weekend I was somewhere that had a piano so I sat down and played something. Someone commented and said to me that they weren't surprised I could play the piano as I just looked like someone who could.

Is there something about your appearance that would give something away about you or not.

Not a judgy thread, please don't turn this into a bun fight.

Just a fun thread........hopefully.

I love this! Unfortunately I have nothing to add unless I think of something later. F to return x

@ohmylordylord phew, I'm reading the replies with one eye open 😂

I love it when someone has a talent or interest that defies what their appearance is!! I would love to learn to play the drums - and this would definitely not really match my appearance! The shock factor is impressive and so interesting in some characters. Unfortunately I fit the mould generally with my talents/appearance!

thelastshadowpuppet · 08/06/2022 11:10

@MuMMA8 go for it! I would also love to learn the drums.

You could get a drum kit and have a go yourself, that's how I started on piano before having lessons.

One of my daughters plays violin and would come home from her lesson and teach me.

I don't come from a family of musicians and I'm the only one in my family that wanted to learn to play an instrument.

That I'm a recovering alcoholic who 3 years ago nearly died. You'd literally never guess - I've worked hard on my recovery.

HouseHelp23 · 08/06/2022 11:11

Not personally but people are often surprised that my 6'4 fiance is a staff nurse. They always expect police or something.

Scottishflower65 · 08/06/2022 11:12

I’m a few years away from 60, suit wearing professional, never a gamer, but a few years ago got a VR headset. Within a few months was in 20 top players in the world in a VR boxing game.

thelastshadowpuppet · 08/06/2022 11:14

@Shannith you are a superstar. My ex partner is 5 years sober, never thought it possible.

I was told recently I look like a vegetarian. As it goes, I am, but not sure how you'd know to look at me.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 08/06/2022 11:17

I'm a fair few stones overweight and run marathons

You wouldn't think so! ( I'm losing the weight though)

fireandpaint · 08/06/2022 11:20

Not me but I had first aid training a few weeks ago with a big, muscly tough looking guy who said he also worked as a bouncer for clubs. But then during the session he started BSL signing fluently to one of the participants who had a hearing impairment and then, over lunch, he was saying how he found it difficult to find anything because he was vegan.

Passanotherjaffacake · 08/06/2022 11:23

I often get told I don’t look like a vegetarian! have been one for about 25 years.

also I am roughly 90% shapewear and flattering clothing after the damage of pregnancy and childbirth so if anyone who is not my husband saw me naked (v unlikely!) they would have something of a shock!

GlumyGloomer · 08/06/2022 11:28

At school I was pigeonholed as boring and uncool, because I was quite. Towards the end of high-school we had an own clothes day and I went in wearing black leather knee high boots. My peers literally could not compute the fact that I owned nice shoes, it was quite amusing to watch.
As an adult quite a few people have been shocked that I don't have a degree, although that's more a hidden failing than a talent...

GlumyGloomer · 08/06/2022 11:29

Quiet, not quite

I had this elderly gentleman come to my house to collect an antique he'd bought off me on eBay. This just happened on Monday actually.
He came hobbling up my drive (bad knees... he told me all about them) and at first glance, I just thought, ah bless him. We'll get this ol' geezer a nice cup of tea and give him a quick sit down before he leaves with his antique.
Anyway, we sat around for 3 hours and had several cups of tea. I was just blown away by him. He played the pipe organ (not easy!), repaired them, told me all about their history, and so much more... so very much more. He was just fascinating, interesting, so lovely, and I was instantly aware of what a kind and amazing human being he is. Looking at him hobbling up to my front door, I would never have assumed that inside this man lurked an incredible person with incredible life stories and experiences. Shame on me, really, because all of us have wonderful and interesting aspects. How can we not?

Anyway, I cried buckets after he left! It was so weird. I don't know what that was about (mid-divorce, husband's in jail, brother died last year... I am an emotional wreck and I tend to bond with every nice person who looks my way... I cried after the two gentlemen who delivered my new fridge left. Weird! This is for the therapist's room.).

I don't run marathons but yeah i am old and fat and can shift a washing machine (and disconnect/connect) on my own.

CindersCatsSister · 08/06/2022 11:34

People are always staggered that I can’t ice skate or roller skate. Apparently I look as though I should be able to??

10HailMarys · 08/06/2022 11:39

@Imsittinginthekitchensink I was vegetarian for about 15 years and was told more than once during that time that I 'didn't look like a vegetarian'!

I am no longer a vegetarian but I've still got no idea what a vegetarian is meant to look like.

Swayingpalmtrees · 08/06/2022 11:40

I am small petite and blonde and people gasp visually when I tell them what work I do...and say I am too young to do such a thing, but seventeen years later the comments about my age are less, but still the same eyeball popping.

Swayingpalmtrees · 08/06/2022 11:41

Usually means you are not skinny and under nourished enough in my experience 10HailMarys

My DP looks rough as fuck. He's built like a brick shithouse. He's got a shaved head. He's always in jeans/trackies, hoody and trainers. He's got a resting "I'm going to fucking glass you" face.

His appearance is very deceiving. He's lovely and very successful.

In the last few months the following has happened to him:
He got bollocked by a cleaner at work who mistook him for a window cleaner. He's the CEO of the company.

The security guard at his company's lawyer's office called the police because they didn't believe DP was there to see the lawyer (he didn't have his phone and there was no answer at the lawyer's front desk to confirm)

Last week, he was on jury duty. He showed up really early because of a mix-up with timings and said "I''m here for the [defendant's name] case". The security guy assumed he was the defendant and led him away to a different part of the court.

That's not to mention all the people who cross the road to avoid him when he's out and about. Fortunately DP finds it hilarious and sees the benefits 😂

toucaninjapan · 08/06/2022 11:44

I have childish face and quiet voice, which overall give an impression of a naive romantic woman. These days I use this to my advantage, but back in the day I got upset when people's first impression of me was a "fragile obedient girl who does exactly as people tell her". My character couldn't be further from that.
I also felt more in danger on the streets because of my face and appearance (looking victim-y, which sometimes attracts dangerous people).
Oh well, at least when I skipped classes at the university (I was one of the worst skippers), nobody ever doubted me. Professors just presumed I was sick or had some other valid reason (tbh I just had zero interest in their subjects so didn't bother to go).
My friend, on the other hand, has this cool vibe and striking beauty with fierce look on her face. Almost everyone meeting her for the first time would say she seems kind of arrogant, distant and too cool to be around (some even say she's "scary"), while in fact she is the sweetest person ever, the type that would jump to your rescue at any time (whether you are her close friend or just an acquaintance), very kind & scared of any conflicts.
The looks can be so deceiving at times!

BogRollBOGOF · 08/06/2022 11:45

People were always assuming that I must teach primary and surprised that it was secondary. Admittedly I can blend in with a herd of y8s and only ever wore a white shirt and black jacket to work on one occasion 😂
