One of our customers came in last week and as he was waiting for his order we got chatting and it turns out he is an amazing opera singer. Looking at him you'd never think it. Think older gent, builder type.

Over the weekend I was somewhere that had a piano so I sat down and played something. Someone commented and said to me that they weren't surprised I could play the piano as I just looked like someone who could.

Is there something about your appearance that would give something away about you or not.

Not a judgy thread, please don't turn this into a bun fight.

Just a fun thread........hopefully.

I was walking my dogs along the towpath. Was stopped by a holiday maker on a hire boat. He asked me if I could fix his non starting engine. Apparently I looked like boat mechanic.
I did fox his engine and got them away on holiday! (I own a boat).
I am short, small and grey heading for retirement. Nearly everyone makes the mistake of thinking I am a push over and too nice. Whereas my 6’2” bearded built like a rugby player DH is always mistaken for a hard nut. People always try to take in the wrong one of us.

That I'm a recovering alcoholic who 3 years ago nearly died. You'd literally never guess - I've worked hard on my recovery.

👏 👍

Glitterspy · 08/06/2022 12:48

The only example I can think of is when the health practitioner in the abortion clinic told me I didn’t look the type to do recreational class A’s…

Sorry not quite on the “fun” tone of the thread!!

swanfake · 08/06/2022 12:48

I'm overweight, don't wear make up, live in jeans and trainers and have an Essex accent (though not a Towie one). Most assume that I'm not particularly bright.

I have a medical based degree and have potential to earn over 100k (but prefer working part time) and I can play 6 different instruments grades 5-8 (woodwind, brass, piano and strings). I am also quite artistic and not a bad singer.

I don't mind. Always fun to see who will talk down to you if they think they're superior. Says a lot about a person.

Tryagain2020 · 08/06/2022 12:49

People constantly think I'm vegetarian when I'm not.

I once met a very overweight woman who I most unfairly judged harshly in my mind. Turns out she was a top sportswoman a few years before but had suffered a severe injury and was bed/wheelchair bound for ages - hence the weight gain. I felt so so awful and vowed never to judge on appearances again.

Whoatealltheminieggs · 08/06/2022 12:50

People always think I have fake lips if that counts. It’s quite annoying.

Burnamer · 08/06/2022 12:50

Well done. That’s amazing. I’m 5 years in and I promise you it keeps getting better and better.
I just wanted to let you know that I think you’re awesome for achieving that.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/06/2022 12:50

Basically I’m short and slim and look fragile but I can do diy like decorating or laying laminate floor or simple plumbing/electrical jobs, it’s only gas I won’t have a crack at. Drill holes and stuff. I can solder wire to circuit boards if I need to. It doesn’t phase me if something breaks and I have to rip carpet and remove all the grippers to fix it. It’s a hassle rather than a drama.

Men dh knows are always shocked I can do manual labour. I don’t enjoy it but it needs to be done.

My grandmother was the same though, grandad would get home from work to find the stairway had a different wall paper than when he’d left that morning. My dm can’t do any diy stuff at all which is why her house wasn’t decorated for so long.

Im also quite quiet and passive at first glance but I’ve got a strong will not be taken advantage of which has scuppered some peoples plans for me, my own parents included.

That was to @Shannith

Shambolina · 08/06/2022 12:51

I'm a male , 40 +, with a shaved head, tattoos and a bit of a belly.

Not to turn things political, but I guess to some I look a bit EDL / Gammon like.

I have had new colleagues and temps around my age - both men and women - think they are safe to make racist and bigoted comments around me, assuming I have far right views.

Unfortunately for them I am extremely ' woke' and unashamedly politically correct , and I despise discrimination in any form, and I have been obliged to report people to HR before now.

ememem84 · 08/06/2022 12:52

People have always said I look Jewish.

I did SUPRISE people at work the other day by doing a couple of back flips. I mentioned I used to be a cheerleader at uni. And a colleague didn’t believe me that I could still backflip. So I busted a couple out while in the office. I’m a couple of years off being 40 fairly senior in the company and probably should have known better. But whatever.

Not me but I had first aid training a few weeks ago with a big, muscly tough looking guy who said he also worked as a bouncer for clubs. But then during the session he started BSL signing fluently to one of the participants who had a hearing impairment and then, over lunch, he was saying how he found it difficult to find anything because he was vegan.

You didn't happen to get his number did you? 😅

NameChanged2X · 08/06/2022 12:52

I was a very young looking willowy blonde in my late twenties (ah, youth!!!). People would mistake me for this delicate, fragile flower in need of saving. In fact, I worked with army officers (as an educator) and won several shooting championships in junior categories in both rifle and pistol.

Itawapuddytat · 08/06/2022 12:55

A close relative. Tall, big, dark, VERY long hair, beard, lots of tattoos, very much "the biker" look, wearing leathers clothes, big boots etc in his "not at work" time, goes to metal gigs etc - he's a senior lecturer at a top University, lots of books and papers published etc. And a devoted family man, very friendly and helpful.

Fink · 08/06/2022 12:55

@MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot People always used to pass me by for drugs as well. Apparently I looked too uptight to be into them. It's been years since I've been in a situation where that would be a possibilty anyway so now I just don't get offered any because I'm not in the 'right' places.

Gizacluethen · 08/06/2022 12:56

I look exactly like who I am. Rough and ready.

Joystir59 · 08/06/2022 12:59

According to feedback I present as very calm and arty/hippyish. Inside I'm a bag of anxiety although I am arty/hippyish, more so than people realise.

iloveeverykindofcat · 08/06/2022 13:00

You know how some people have resting bitch face? I have the opposite. I have resting 'I care, tell me your problems face'.

It's a pain in my ass.

Joystir59 · 08/06/2022 13:01

I used to be extremely thin and looked a poster girl for heroin chic, but in reality was just a bit hyper and had badly controlled asthma which gave me black circles under my eyes.

Tiddlywinkly · 08/06/2022 13:01

Thanks op. Great thread!

I'm quite petite, but I'm a fast runner. I love the looks of surprise I get from some men at races as I overtake them.

I once got talking to a security guard who was also a Beefeater which I thought was pretty cool. He could have made it up, but he was pretty knowledgeable about it.

NutellaCrumpet1 · 08/06/2022 13:03

All the time actually! I dress very unusually and have a south London accent and people are always surprised I have a PhD and work as an academic in a STEM field.

ArchieStar · 08/06/2022 13:05

Not sure if this quite hits the mark but I have terrible resting bitch face (completely undeliberate I just have a horrible natural face 😂) but I’m actually rather nice! I am also small and “stout” in a way that doesn’t match my job in the slightest…

SamPoodle123 · 08/06/2022 13:09

I love a hidden talent. I always wish I had one. Once a friend posted a video of a plumber playing amazing piano. He was fixing something in their house and saw they had a piano and asked if he could play something. My friend said they were blown away with his talent (and so was I!). The plumber was self taught and could play amazingly.

Tiddlywinkly · 08/06/2022 13:10

Just thought of another one! I was on a course and talking to a woman in her 50s that used to be a car mechanic. She was very 'feminine' - make up, dress etc.

She once went to collect her car from its MOT and the garage gave her a long list of what was wrong with her car. She insisted that she get under the car with the mechanic and proceeded to debunk most of the 'issues'. Suddenly her bill was a lot less.
