Will Charles abdicate?

FawnFrenchieMum · 04/06/2022 21:59

Just that really, do you think Charles will abdicate and pass to William?

They seem to be priming William & Kate to take on the roles and are much more public then Charles

YANBU - yes he will
YABU - no he won’t

I don't think he'll abdicate or be King at 96 if he makes it to that age.

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 04/06/2022 22:58

@CapYourDoff is it a “real job” though? I’d have to disagree 😄.

comealongponds · 04/06/2022 23:00

He’s waited 70 years, he’s not going to abdicate when he finally gets there!

i also think he would want to shield William from that pressure as long as possible, especially while William has young children.

blubberyboo · 04/06/2022 23:01

The opposite.
I think the Queen is lining us up for Charles’ reign. We are seeing a transition in recent events. The eco references in tonight’s party are setting the tone for what the reign of Charles will be all about. That is what he plans to focus on. She won’t abdicate and neither will he.

What pressure? The job looks mind numbingly boring to me.

FieryPitOfMordor · 04/06/2022 23:03

Not pass it straight on to William, but I actually think he might set a precedent for “retiring” at a certain age, as part of a wider reform of the monarchy. Happens in other countries.

OldTinHat · 04/06/2022 23:09

No. Why do you think Camilla was on stage this evening? To prime as Consort.

Nat6999 · 04/06/2022 23:10

I don't think he will be king for very long, he already doesn't look well, ten years maximum. I was talking to ds a few weeks ago & asked him if he realised that he might see three coronations in his lifetime.

MissChristie · 04/06/2022 23:14

No. I think he will want to keep William & Kate and their children free of the responsibility and demands of the ‘top job’ for as long as he can.

BuanoKubiamVej · 04/06/2022 23:16

No way. And William wouldn't want him to. William should have the opportunity to maximise time focusing on his family until his children are all adults and I hope for the children's sake that Charles lives long enough that they don't have to adjust to their dad being king while they are still kids.

Given that being a monarch is pretty much a ceremonial role it's much better held by someone of an advanced age rather than someone young. Elizabeth succeeded at a terribly young age and it wasn't good for her or her family.

MelonsMelonsMelons · 04/06/2022 23:18

No, why would he?

The system is the system. Him next and then William.

Its not a popularity contest.

Dinoteeth · 04/06/2022 23:18

He won't any more than his mother has.
Although he has to be doing more of the Monarchs role, he will not put the burden on William when his DC are so young.

I don't think another Monarch will work into their 90s, I think they will stand aside or appoint a Regent before then.
But Charles will Rule for a few years before passing to William.

Topseyt123 · 04/06/2022 23:21

I highly doubt it. Why would he?

glamosaurus · 04/06/2022 23:22

It's such a pity we won't have a Queen Anne II. She'd be absolutely perfect. I'm not looking forward to the reign of Charles III after Elizabeth II.

Florenz · 04/06/2022 23:23

Why on earth would he? He's been waiting all his life to be King.

@Dinoteeth i bet my house he won’t - he’ll reign until he dies. He’ll never abdicate.

Dinoteeth · 04/06/2022 23:35

I actually don't think Charles will see 90. He's not as fit as his Dad Prince Philip was in his mid 70s.

But I don't think William, George or future monarchs will reign into their 90s (if we still have a monarchy) I think they will pass the crown on and retire at some point.

Whilst you’re busy impressing us with your knowledge of how many Annes, Elizabeths and Charleses have ruled previously you’ve failed to consider the possibility he could become King George VII (or even King Philip or King Arthur)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/06/2022 23:43

SwanBuster · 04/06/2022 22:17

He’ll be king, provided he outlived his mum.

After that, it’s William and a true English Rose. It’s Hanbury that William will probably be a lot younger than his dad when he ascends to the throne - he might have a shot at a silver jubilee. But we’ll probably never see a monarch like our Queen again.

I see what you did there.

Antarcticant · 04/06/2022 23:49

No way on earth. Charles would see abdication as a failure, a betrayal of his duty.

It's been mooted he will take the regnal name of George VII but personally I think he has been Charles too long for that.

If we still have a monarchy by then, I predict George's firstborn will be a girl called Elizabeth so we will have an Elizabeth III in approx 100 years' time.

mynameisnotkate · 04/06/2022 23:58

That’s really not the way the monarchy works. When you are crowned, you have to make a vow before god to serve till your death. Abdication is a major failure and has only ever happened once, to a man who was patently unfit to rule in multiple ways, and it nearly brought down the monarchy (though him remaining as king would have been worse …)

I can’t see the monarchy ever changing to be like this, it complexly antithetical to the whole conception of monarchy in the British model.

Redwinemaestro · 05/06/2022 00:02

Vikinga · 04/06/2022 22:20

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that a 90 something woman is still bloody holding on to the job. But I also think that the monarchy is stupid and should be dissolved.

This!

Elizabeth should abdicate first!

Princessoftheuniverse · 05/06/2022 00:13

I don’t know why everyone seems to think he can’t wait to be king. I’d say he has all the advantages and none of the disadvantages. If I were him I’d be happy to put it off for as long as possible. Once king he should stay king to save William from the job as long as he can. I’m

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 05/06/2022 00:15

@Princessoftheuniverse disadvantages being what? I don’t think he thinks there are any disadvantages 🤷‍♀️
