Will Charles abdicate?

FawnFrenchieMum · 04/06/2022 21:59

Just that really, do you think Charles will abdicate and pass to William?

They seem to be priming William & Kate to take on the roles and are much more public then Charles

YANBU - yes he will
YABU - no he won’t

Why on earth would he? That's not how monarchies work.

Without the tradition, there is nothing else there to support the existence of the monarchy. So the royal family are all about maintaining the traditions.

And kings do not traditionally abdicate just because their heir is a bit more glam than they are.

No but I think it would be better if he did. With all the scandal over Diana, the stuff with Andrew, I think it would be better bringing in the younger generation lacking those kind of skeletons in their closets.

LookItsMeAgain · 04/06/2022 22:27

Janeymac, he's waited so so so so very long to assume the position. He's not going to abdicate. Why would he?
Edward abdicated because he loved a thrice-divorced American woman.
He's got Camilla. No need to abdicate.

icanbewhatiwant · 04/06/2022 22:28

No of course he won't. He's had a long wait!

GetThatHelmetOn · 04/06/2022 22:28

YABU he won’t, even if he should. I bet monarchy would die with him if he doesn’t.

chipsandpeas · 04/06/2022 22:29

will he fuck, hes been brought up and primed for it since he was born

echt · 04/06/2022 22:30

OneTonNoodles · 04/06/2022 22:03

Absolutely not. He loves glory and power. He was furious when people loved Diana more than him.

And you know this how?

waitingpatientlyforspring · 04/06/2022 22:31

Of course he won't! William and Kate are stepping up into their future roles as Prince and Princess of Wales.

He has been open about not having his mother around when he was young due to her becoming queen. He wouldn't do that to his grandchildren.

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 04/06/2022 22:36

@echt it’s very well documented from numerous sources that he hated the attention Diana got and was insanely jealous of her. No secret at all.

He comes across as a petulant man child but that’s hardly surprising given his fucked up crazy upbringing. 🤷‍♀️

leotardrock · 04/06/2022 22:38

I don't think he will abdicate!
Although my mum used to tell a great story about my gran!
Apparently when Charles was born she snorted & said He'll never be King!

So who knows🤷‍♀️

Of course he won't - what a strange question! It's not as though he is 2IC in a business in line for the CEO's job. It's a duty, not a career.

SecondBestBed · 04/06/2022 22:44

No, definitely not.

Thedogscollar · 04/06/2022 22:44

Never. He has just seen his mother reach 70 years and counting so why on earth would he abdicate after waiting all this time.

SenecaFallsRedux · 04/06/2022 22:46

Charles won't abdicate. But all this supposition that he wants to spare WIlliam and Catherine from the job while they are "young" with a young family is a bit silly considering that they are both nearing middle age. Lots of 40 year olds have very demanding jobs.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 04/06/2022 22:46

cdba88 · 04/06/2022 22:11

Why would he?

Do you not remember the fuss that was caused by the last abdication?

Funnily enough, no, and I'm guessing you don't either 🤣

Toulouses · 04/06/2022 22:48

If he really cares about the future of the royal family then he will. Personally I have nothing against him or Camilla, they come across to me as very genuine and caring, however I’ve never met anyone who admits to liking them much (people who have never met them). William and Kate are much better equipped to be king and queen, more popular and easily relatable. Charles doesn’t have the charisma or personality to head something which represents a whole people / Kingdom. Unfortunately he will have waited all his life for the job so I think it’s never going to happen. No way will he give it up.

Ponderingwindow · 04/06/2022 22:48

Charles abdicating would be too much drama. He can be king and just not be particularly active if he is too old.

I’d say it is more likely that William and Kate will have to help out quite a bit and William may need to be on-call to substitute for certain events just as Charles current subs for the Queen.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 04/06/2022 22:50

The problem is that constitutionally if he abdicates, his heirs lose their place in succession too. Then who would be King? Yes, Andrew. 😱

FuchsAndMöhr · 04/06/2022 22:51

The Queen won’t abdicate

Charles won’t abdicate

Thats not how it works. I’m not sure how many MN threads it’ll take to make that clear 🙄

Not true. An Act of Parliament would be required to remove anyone from the line of succession, unless they become Roman Catholic.

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 04/06/2022 22:55

But @Toulouses that is the whole problem with a hereditary process - you get whatever crap comes up in the line of succession. There is no choice. Admitting that means you destroy any justification for continuing the charade.

Eightiesfan · 04/06/2022 22:56

Wishful thinking.

CapYourDoff · 04/06/2022 22:57

Not going to happen. Anyway it will be his first real job despite starting it at an advanced age, however despite never working he has a handsome portfolio of wealth just the same.

And don't give me that stuff about the Prince's Trust, it's all very noble but he has staff for that, and everything else too it seems. And he and Camilla do not live together either. Perfect recipe for a good relationship. The Queen and PP did not live together either. Is that a Royal thing that helps their longevity?
