Will Charles abdicate?

FawnFrenchieMum · 04/06/2022 21:59

Just that really, do you think Charles will abdicate and pass to William?

They seem to be priming William & Kate to take on the roles and are much more public then Charles

YANBU - yes he will
YABU - no he won’t

No I don't think he will abdicate. Agree with others, he's been primed his whole life to be King. I don't think he'll pass it on to William.

ScootsMcHoy · 04/06/2022 22:13

Why would he? He doesn't come across as a slacker.

I quite like him and I really like Camilla.

He seems to have a good relationship with William, if I were in that position I would want to protect my son from having to take all that on.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 04/06/2022 22:13

No I don’t think he will, he has been brought up knowing his duty. I also don’t think he’d want to put do much responsibility on William while his children are young.

Jellybean23 · 04/06/2022 22:13

Not a cat in hell's chance that he will abdicate . He longs to be king. That was pretty obvious when he married Diana and used her to bear heirs for him. He wanted to be with Camilla but married Di.

No he shouldn’t.

minipie · 04/06/2022 22:14

Don’t be daft. To abdicate in favour of a supposedly “better suited” family member would undermine the whole hereditary nature of monarchy. Once you start choosing the person best suited to the job that means it could be opened up to .. anyone!

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/06/2022 22:14

He won’t, unless pushed hard.

The palace should push though, having a young King and Queen is the only way to keep the monarchy going

Then you could establish abdication eg William has it from 45-70 and then passes to George as her turns 40, which is what most other European countries do.

I am not a royalist so I don’t personally care, but having a line of 70 year old new Kings is a sure fire way to finish them off

ThatPosterIsSoRight · 04/06/2022 22:14

He could easily be 80-odd before becoming king. Would he really want to take that on then? The Queen has already taken a vow to do her duty for her entire life, Charles hasn’t (yet). I reckon if he’s in his 80s and tired then the sensible thing would be to pass it straight to William.

No it doesn’t, he can’t choose who comes after him, William is his heir

Figgygal · 04/06/2022 22:15

Of course he wont

AliceMcK · 04/06/2022 22:16

I do wonder if he might. I think the people who pull the strings in the background may want it. I wonder if the Queen approved camilla to be Queen consort was as some sort of deal, public acceptance of her and he would agree to pass the crown straight onto William. If the royal family want to continue and bring back public approval they would have a far better chance with William and Kate on the throne.

Emmelina · 04/06/2022 22:16

No, he’s not going to wait this long to just shrug and hand it down as soon as he gets it.

SwanBuster · 04/06/2022 22:17

He’ll be king, provided he outlived his mum.

After that, it’s William and a true English Rose. It’s Hanbury that William will probably be a lot younger than his dad when he ascends to the throne - he might have a shot at a silver jubilee. But we’ll probably never see a monarch like our Queen again.

titchy · 04/06/2022 22:18

Eh has the Queen died or something?

SwanBuster · 04/06/2022 22:18

Sorry, handy. What a silly typo.

Porcupineintherough · 04/06/2022 22:18

Divine ŕight of Kings innit? Charles is the next "chosen one" in line. God says so.

RenegadeMatron · 04/06/2022 22:18

Why are people even asking this question?

No, he will not abdicate.

There is zero chance of this happening.

It doesn’t work on an opt-in / opt-out basis.

The abdication of Edward VIII was a constitutional crisis, which impacted on the Queen’s father (and mother) / Charles’ grandfather profoundly. It was a complete and utter exception which proves the rule.

Charles will be king.

TheFoxAndTheStar · 04/06/2022 22:19

I’m sure he said that he wanted to “protect” Will as long as possible, particularly while his children were young, by taking on the burden.

That said, I think they will work as a tighter team with Will taking on a lot more public duties.

Vikinga · 04/06/2022 22:20

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that a 90 something woman is still bloody holding on to the job. But I also think that the monarchy is stupid and should be dissolved.

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 04/06/2022 22:23

Of course he won’t abdicate! By abdicating he’s literally admitting what a crock of old shite the hereditary principle is and there’s no way he’d do that. He’s bloody desperate to be king - he’ll cling to it until he shuffles off this mortal coil 🙄.

stepuporshutup · 04/06/2022 22:23

OneTonNoodles · 04/06/2022 22:03

Absolutely not. He loves glory and power. He was furious when people loved Diana more than him.

This no way would he bypass his fame

Fairislefandango · 04/06/2022 22:23

No. I mean... I don't care, and I think the monarchy should be abolished anyway but no, I don't think Charles will pass it straight on to William.

SweetMystery · 04/06/2022 22:24

No, he’ll be King for a few years and it will then pass on to his son.

swindo · 04/06/2022 22:24

I kind of get people celebrating the queen but are people really going to get patriotic and flag waving at Charles' coronation when they can't pay their gas bills? I just can't see it.
