Will Charles abdicate?

FawnFrenchieMum · 04/06/2022 21:59

Just that really, do you think Charles will abdicate and pass to William?

They seem to be priming William & Kate to take on the roles and are much more public then Charles

YANBU - yes he will
YABU - no he won’t

No, to abdicate is tabboo, and would mean dishonour in the Royal context. I imagine he'll want to shoulder the pressures of being King off of William for as long as possible too.

I do like the idea of William & Kate as King and Queen though, young and modern.

KangarooKenny · 05/06/2022 07:25

I wish he would.

Absolutely not. He loves glory and power. He was furious when people loved Diana more than him.

Did he tell you that? Grin

LaBellina · 05/06/2022 07:43

The Crown is all about stability and following tradition. I very much doubt Charles will abdicate in favor of William for this reason alone.

No, he's waited too long

lickenchugget · 05/06/2022 08:00

No, why should he?

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 05/06/2022 08:01

I wish they'd just draw a nice neat line under the whole ridiculous soap opera. Let the old bird carry out her last few years of what she thinks of as her duty, then end the damn thing.

Pedallleur · 05/06/2022 08:01

Only been waiting for 70 years to do the job he was born to do. Do you really think Camilla would let him?

Talia99 · 05/06/2022 08:03

William and Kate do minimal work as it is. Charles will hold on for as long as possible because William isn’t up to the job. That may not be his fault - it’s what happens when someone inherits a job rather than getting it on merit - but it’s going to be an issue in due course.

balalake · 05/06/2022 08:18

Not a chance.

user1498572889 · 05/06/2022 08:20

He should but he wont.

DisforDarkChocolate · 05/06/2022 08:40

Nope, but I don't think he'll live as long as the Queen.

I think Camilla would secretly be delighted! I do not think she wants to be queen in the slightest as it will totally change the life she is at least semi comfortable with at the moment. She will do it for him, not for herself.

In fairness they seem to have stepped up a bit lately, particularly William (of whom I am not a huge fan) but I take your point!

How do you know her?

SpiderVersed · 05/06/2022 09:36

I wish he would, because he’s going to be a disaster, but there’s no way he will.

It's such a pity we won't have a Queen Anne II. She'd be absolutely perfect. I'm not looking forward to the reign of Charles III after Elizabeth II.

His regnal name will be George VII, not Charles III.

megletthesecond · 05/06/2022 09:51

No. He will make the role his own. He's had enough time to plan for it.
I also doubt he'd want William to have the extra duties when he has school age children.

Antarcticant · 05/06/2022 09:51

Some people seem to think abdication is as simple as, say, resigning from your job. It isn't - it requires an Act of Parliament and it would be a huge international scandal.

There is no way Charles will abdicate.

The Queen herself has been priming us for his accession - remember her speech confirming Camilla will be Queen?

Yes, but he can step down due to age/health as much as the queen can. The act of Parliament would be just a checkmark exercise and there won’t be any scandal as kings and queens have been handing down the throne to the next generation at retirement age for decades. What is scandalous is having Charles crowned at his age and expecting the same for William.

Snoozer11 · 05/06/2022 10:01

I always find there's something really sad about people who have a particular problem with Charles.

Andouillette · 05/06/2022 10:01

MelonsMelonsMelons · 05/06/2022 09:33

I don't, and I never claimed to. Hence "I think" at the start of my post. Otherwise it would have been "I know". Much like everybody else posting here I am speculating based on observation. This is a woman who doesn't push herself forward, seems happy to be in the background when she can etc. She doesn't give off a 'give me a crown, I want it now' vibe.

TheCountessOfGrantham · 05/06/2022 10:02

No. He will not. He will be king the second his mum dies. He won't abdicate. He wouldn't do that to William

DisforDarkChocolate · 05/06/2022 10:03

I don't think Charles will pick a regnal name @CounsellorTroi , it would be pointless in this day and age. After all, the press still use Middleton and Markle. I think it would be incredibly backwards looking, and Charles isn't really that.
