To be annoyed about the Jubilee

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

Please enlighten me because I’m baffled. She’s not done anything for anybody her whole life 🤷🏽‍♀️

Now, come on! She's kindly saved her nonce son from going to court after all. 😆

goodbyestranger · 30/05/2022 15:23

Blossomtoes in what way is it historically significant if it doesn't cause any change?

Topgub · 30/05/2022 15:24

@CurlyhairedAssassin

Given her defence if her son and his she campaigned to be allowed to continue to tax dodge and the fact she has done nothing with her positionor privilegeto help her 'subjects', I'm saying not so nice.

CockingASnook · 30/05/2022 15:24

I still can't get my head around why we curtsey / tug our forelocks to a random and extremely wealthy German family who were simply better at war and strategic marriage than other extremely wealthy families. It's pathetic. Plus it means I have to do five days' work in three.

neverbeenskiing · 30/05/2022 15:25

I'm indifferent to the Royal Family and find all the flag-waving nationalism a bit cringeworthy but if people want to celebrate then that's up to them. We are treating it as we would any other bank holiday, just enjoying some quality time together as a family. It does irritate me that certain sections of the press are taking full advantage of all the pomp and ceremony to distract from the behaviour of our Government but they would do that with any big event.

Would love to know how many Mnetters who come from colonised countries feels about this.
I’m happy to be British and English. But to me the monarchy represents British Imperialism and hundreds of years of colonised slavery in my country of India.

Shes just some old woman to me and most ethnic minorities I know. An old very rich very privileged woman who didn’t want to give up the commonwealth even though all those countries and their people didn’t give two fucks about QE.

I don’t understand what the achievement is. She has managed to live a long time due to a life of privilege pampering and incredible healthcare. So she does the washing up a bit at Balmoral (can’t believe someone posted this to show how down to earth she is 🤣)
Shes won’t have cleaned or cooked or held down a job or looked after all her children on her own, or had to scrimp and save for a holiday or worried about her bills.
I mean ffs come on. What is her job???

the simpering deference for the monarchy is embarrassing in multicultural Britain.

The vast vast majority of us brown and black people
couldnt give a shit. (I really want to say none of us but waiting for a brown person to appear and say how much the love the queen. Not gonna happen!)

I'm black and like the queen 💁not fussed on the monarchy as an institution though. Everyone who lives here benefits from the history of this country, yourself included.

THEDEACON · 30/05/2022 15:28

It will be just another day of relentless caring in this household !

Confuseddotcombo · 30/05/2022 14:23

I do get where you are coming from, and the Queen strikes me as someone who cares more about people coming together, rather than champagne and extravagance. I’m not a Royalist but I can see that the Queen will go down in history as a key figure …. and many people think that is worth celebrating.

She could have chosen to live a life of luxury, done bugger all with her days. Actually, she’s been really hard working until very recently, has shown great leadership (eg during Covid) never put a foot wrong herself. Acted with integrity we could only dream of for our PM and cabinet. Ok she lives in palaces, but she lives a relatively simple life in that context.

She eats marmalade on toast for breakfast according to her ex chef, who I met on holiday once. Apparently she likes to do the washing up when with the family at Balmoral! She doesn’t like luxury and prefers the simpler things in life, which I think makes her an inspiration. She teaches us all what is important in life.

Yes her children have let her down (one in particular must bring her a lot of shame) and who knows if that is down to her parenting, but it could happen to any parent. Her family has the added pressure of duty, living in the public eye….the privilege can be destructive (Andrew, Harry).

I wouldn’t want to live her life, but she has taken the hand dealt to her and given the world so much in return. She is a model Queen and very popular inside and outside Britain for good reason.

It's said that she was happiest when she was merely the wife of a naval officer, living in the Married Quarters in Malta.

Yup you are.

I think this is exactly the time for an extra long BH weekend, some cheerful bunting and an excuse to party.

Or should we all sit at home feeding our misery and making ourselves feel even worse about things

I would love to be able to afford a nice meal, bottle of something to celebrate an historic milestone.. BUT..... yet again feeling very left out

Jasmine5552 · 30/05/2022 15:33

I will be working Thursday and Friday so no jubilee celebrations for me.

user1471538283 · 30/05/2022 15:34

It has made me feel quite sick. We've got people not having enough to eat in this country and a ridiculous amount of money is being spent on this. The money could have been used to help people and leave a legacy. It just shows how out if touch they all are. Or they dont care. Or both.

I earn well and I'm feeling the increases.

LocalHobo · 30/05/2022 15:34

If you’re struggling to find any moments to look forward to or any enjoyment in life I would consider whether your surface feelings run deeper than more than a general malaise and anxiety about finances.

In real life I don't come across so many people struggling to find pleasure in, often small, things. Having a cup of tea and a sandwich on a bank holiday is a quiet, timeless (cheap) joy.

MelonsMelonsMelons · 30/05/2022 15:34

I’m not into it but don’t have an issue with other people enjoying themselves if that’s their “bag”. I’ve also managed to avoid it without even trying - in fact the only sign of it I’ve seen is Marks and Spencer flogging tins of biscuits (had no impact on me whatsoever) and the bloke up the street has stuck up some bunting (also no impact on me whatsoever).

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen!

O Lord our God arise,
Scatter our enemies,
And make them fall!
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!

Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world o'er.

From every latent for,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince and friend,
God save the Queen!

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign!
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!

SoftSheen · 30/05/2022 15:36

YABU. Don't celebrate if you don't want to, just enjoy the long weekend.

If you do want to celebrate, it doesn't need to be done expensively and certainly doesn't require luxuries such as champagne. For example, make some cakes and go for a picnic in your local countryside or park.

Blossomtoes · 30/05/2022 15:38

Dinotour · 30/05/2022 15:35

How much is being spent on it?

Less than Johnson bunged Dido Harding for not producing her world beating test and trace. Get angry about the right things.

thegreenlight · 30/05/2022 15:39

I have lots to look forward to in life, Thankyou very much! We are out with the children all over the place at weekends (where I like to spend my money) it’s the crassness of it at a time when people are genuinely struggling. I have a history degree and fail to see how the date is significant. A new coronation is significant, tomorrow having the same ruler as there has been for 70 years of todays is no big deal. Also, I don’t need an excuse to spend time with my family or eat cake.

Faffandahalf · 30/05/2022 15:40

I live here and therefore benefit from Britains history because my
own country was raped and pillaged by Britain for hundreds of years.

If they had enslaved my ancestors with Colonialism India would have flourished in its economy and become a successful trading country.

Sooooo fuck off with your ‘oh you’re so lucky to be here’ shtick

my grandparents came over cos Britain was begging for people from its colonised nations to. They became the backbone of this country’s workforce and economy in the 50’s. I’m not grateful for anything.

Moanranger · 30/05/2022 15:40

My community “celebration” consists of the privilege of booking a spot at a table in the local community centre ( think 1959s building, smelling of damp & old books) with the offer of free soft drinks.
Uh, no thanks.
I will be gardening and catching up on work🙂

Threeboysandadog · 30/05/2022 15:41

I’m not a royalist and I think the monarchy, in their present state, should end with the death of The Queen but, given the choice, I don’t believe this is the life she would have chosen for herself and I think she has done her best. I don’t grudge her this celebration which she herself would probably prefer to give a miss. I wouldn’t swap places with her.

I do think the time is coming when they should sell off the castles and stately homes and move into more reasonable accommodation with less staff and lower bills and the “Royal Family” should be Charles and his immediate heirs.

ButtonSister · 30/05/2022 15:43

The nation seems to be constantly celebrating or commemorating the past and not looking to the future.
WW1, WW2, the Queen's coronation - the "good old days" revisited with a rosey hue of misplaced nostalgia.
Meanwhile the present is crap and the future looks bleak.
Bread (at inflated prices) and circuses indeed.

goodbyestranger · 30/05/2022 15:23

Historic significance doesn’t have to bring change. You’re conflating two completely different things. It’s a unique event - unprecedented and unlikely to be repeated.

Mammma91 · 30/05/2022 15:45

Driving me crazy too Op. I don’t mind those who do celebrate - but after forking out £87 to fill the car up I don’t think I want to splash anymore on a bottle of champagne to toast the queen.
