To be annoyed about the Jubilee

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

I think maybe you are mixing up political and partisan. The monarchy is part of the political system, but it's mandated to be non-partisan.

Exactly. Thank you for making that distinction.

Blossomtoes · 02/06/2022 17:00

Thank you. I’ll choose my words more carefully in future.

FoiledByTheInsect · 02/06/2022 17:02

No MangyInseam I think the pp read and understood the carefully-worded but nevertheless contradictory page of garbage on royal.uk, eg the "right to express her views" and then "act on the advice of her Ministers" 😂 Translation: she can do and say whatever she likes in a behind the scenes, covert kind of way, as the plebs are not allowed to know what was said or the number of special favours and influences that come out of those "audiences". The RF is one giant self-interest group that is allowed, in its own words, a "special relationship" with the PM.

Keep watching the parades, that's exactly where they want you.

And now, with quite beautiful timing, PA has tested positive for Covid....

Yes, I agree, very convenient timing. 😐

What an utter set up coincidence!

Forinara · 02/06/2022 17:10

Four days is too much. One would have covered it.
However, the royal pomp and ceremony is one thing we do well and get right which brings a lot of international attention and interest. We aren't all that great at most things.
The reality of Brexit proved that (it would have been even more obvious had it not been masked by covid).

Without the monarchy, the best parts of our elite education system (which people also constantly attack and wish to reform) we are just a dull , little island. and completely overlookable. Be careful what you wish for.

I was shocked at the amount of people walking down pall mall. My first thought was that it was rife for covid!

Which can never be, of course.

You don't catch covid outdoors.

We aren't shelling out upwards of 100 million a year of public funds to any other rich family

True.
The monarchy cost £87.5m last year. The number of tax payers is 32,200,000, so they cost each tax payer £2.71 per year.

CreamyBruley can you point out anywhere on this thread where anyone is defending Prince sleazebag Andrew? I haven't seen any posts supporting him.

By comparison the French Presidency costs €105m/year. France is a much more relevant comparison than Ireland, given that they have a population and economy around the same size as the UK.

Are people still hand-wringing about Covid?

The French Prez has political power, Ireland's prez does not. Macron is far more than a ceremonial Head of State.

No it isn't. France is a full presidential model whereas Ireland is a parliamentary system with a largely ceremonial HoS. The latter would be the most obvious choice for the U.K., unless they also dissolved the parliamentary system (which I see no reason for). The size of the country would make little difference with a

Goldencarp · 02/06/2022 19:13

Families and friends, communities coming together, street parties etc. anything that brings people together is a good thing especially after a rubbish few years. You can’t stop celebrating things because some people are struggling. It would be a miserable world indeed if everyone felt as you do.

RampantIvy · 02/06/2022 19:17

If you aren't keen don't participate but everyone going into their homes and being seperate is not a great way to deal with an economic crises, in terms of community health.

I agree. I have just been talking to a neighbour I have never met before, she was lovely. One of the beacons is going to be lit in front of our house, and the neighbour provided the pallets. A lot of people from the two local villages will be in attendance and the local brass band will be there. I like the idea of the community getting together in what should be a happy occasion.

goodbyestranger · 02/06/2022 19:38

RampantIvy no-one may be singing Andrew's praise but some are sanitising the allegations against him (which he has, in effect, conceded by the whacking great pay out). And there's a servile refusal to condemn the behaviour of the Queen, not merely in funding the pay out but also in very publicly giving him sanctuary for an extended period of time last year in order that he could skulk away refusing service of the court papers. Then she tried to send a message to the public saying she supported him when she let him escort her down the aisle at the memorial service for Philip. And now she's hiding behind this nonsense about him having Covid so that she can sit on the fence about the allegations of rape and trafficking etc. She's not covering herself with glory.

goodbyestranger · 02/06/2022 19:41

Oh I see that the Queen is now staying at home with Andrew too.

RampantIvy · 02/06/2022 19:51

I don't disagree with you @goodbyestranger. I'd hate to think wht it must be like to be the parent of a criminal (because that is what he is).

Blackmagicqueen · 02/06/2022 20:00

'Families and friends, communities coming together, street parties etc. anything that brings people together is a good thing.'

If only they could be a 'community' all year around and actually respect each other instead of ignoring some neighbours, not doing anything remotely neighbourly, selfishly making a racket at nighttime with no respect for anyone, driving over people's gardens because it is convenient, parking ignorantly with no thought for other people's visitors etc but it enables them to not shuffle cars. Yet yes let's comes together for the Royal family that most of these people don't even support to begin with...
If you have nice neighbours who are a proper community fair enough but where I live it is laughable.

CathyorClaire · 02/06/2022 21:23

What better way to spend your time while the country spends millions celebrating you than soothing your favourite baby's fevered brow?

123cupcake4 · 02/06/2022 21:29

I think most people are just happy to have a long bank holiday in the sunshine. We went to our local jubilee celebrations. But no one actually mentioned the jubilee it was a large picnic with a few food trucks. Bouncy castle and some live music. Just food trucks, bar and bouncy castle was charged. Bit you didn't have to use these things. And they put out free sporting equipment for the kids and a play area. It was a lovely day to break up all the rain we have had.

I don't give 2 monkeys about the royal family. However it is an historical moment. Which is based on luck. But so is most historic moments. Things happen. Just enjoy the sunshine

Perhaps it's just for the day?

It can't be pleasant but I suppose the bigger question is would you turn you back on your child? I don't think I could.
