To be annoyed about the Jubilee

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

Yanbu at all. I’m totally ignoring it.

I would normally put aside not being a monarchist and get in the spirit of things, but I can’t this time, with the state this country is in.

Yup you are.

I think this is exactly the time for an extra long BH weekend, some cheerful bunting and an excuse to party.

Or should we all sit at home feeding our misery and making ourselves feel even worse about things

Snowflakes1122 · 30/05/2022 12:42

YANBU. I’m sure the royal family aren’t feeling the squeeze.

I will not be celebrating a family of billionaires off the back of tax payers.

Winterhail · 30/05/2022 12:42

I'm not celebrating personally, but I do think that 70 years on the throne is pretty special, and it should be acknowledged.

BlueGlassOfDoom · 30/05/2022 12:45

YANBU - it’s just Bread & Circuses.

emmetgirl · 30/05/2022 12:45

I'm trying to ignore it. I own a cafe bar in a tourist destination and am not "using" it in any way to promote business at all. It's just a normal day for us. No specials and no bloody bunting either. We open 7 days a week so no bank holiday either.
It's driving me bloody mad.
I'm a committed republican in case you hadn't already guessed.

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2022 12:45

We’ll all get called killjoys I know, but watching all the gushing over this over privileged woman and her “service” to the nation, it baffles me. And as you say, the worry about the cost of living while this bunch of thickos live in their lavish palaces and we’re expected to celebrate their contribution? A visitor from a different planet would be looking at this going HmmConfused

Just wait a minute, they’ll be here in a minute… Oh but she brings in such a lot of tourists and their cash. Bollocks.

YANBU - it’s just Bread & Circuses.

Sorry to quote myself, but i meant to say, without the bread!

FictionalCharacter · 30/05/2022 12:46

People can celebrate or celebrate as they wish. Nobody has to buy champagne.
The cost of this extremely rare event is a minute drop in the ocean of the country’s expenditure. IMO there are much worse ways in which public money, a lot more money, is being wasted.

Antarcticant · 30/05/2022 12:47

I'm not a royalist but this is an event of historical significance. There almost certainly won't be another in the lifetime of anyone who sees this one (unless tragedy strikes within the present line of succession). The circumstances that allowed it to happen - the early death of George VI - are less likely to occur in the future given medical advances. So I am going to take an interest and attend some local, free events, to be 'part of history.'

Nitgel · 30/05/2022 12:50

I dunno I would have been peed off years ago but now think it will be a bit of fun for a day. I think we can then end the monarchy on a good note. 😁

Snoozer11 · 30/05/2022 12:51

I'm struggling too but i can appreciate that this is a hugely significant event in British history and I have more important things to be annoyed at than a bit of bunting.

This is one weekend where people might unite, and yet there are so many who seem to seek division.

declutteringmymind · 30/05/2022 12:55

You don't have to partake in any of the festivities but remember those who do are putting money into the economy which is keeping people's jobs going and their bills paid. Rich people need to keep spending.

🤦🏼‍♀️ Someone’s just told you they’re worried about money and having to cut back on non essentials and your response is that if they don’t go out and join in a party with bunting etc (that they’re pretty much told you they can’t afford) they’re sitting at home feeding their misery?

ForestFae · 30/05/2022 12:57

I don’t like it either and am ignoring it. It’s offensive to people who are struggling financially, and it’s offensive (imo) to those of us with ancestry from colonised countries. I’m not interested it in at all.

BonnesVacances · 30/05/2022 12:58

I dunno. It's for a 96 year old who has been in public service for 70 years. If we can't let this be celebrated without moaning about it, we really are a miserable nation.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 30/05/2022 12:59

You can be as pissed off as you want.

It's still happening.

Stay at home and be miserable if you want to. Let the rest of us get on with it and have something to celebrate after two years of COVID.

PeekAtYou · 30/05/2022 13:04

It's fine not to participate but I also think it's fine for businesses to try and cash in. Sainsburys selling more champagne benefits some people- workers stay in their jobs and people with pension funds investing in Sainsburys also benefit.

I think that many people are feeling the pinch but there's many people who aren't (and I don't mean the royals) and street parties are just a different name for a weekend bbq/get together.

CreamyBruley · 30/05/2022 13:06

Same - I cannot understand why we are celebrating the jubilee of such an awful woman tbh.

I keep seeing a poster for a party at my local park and I'm just praying it absolutely pisses it down all day.

TulipsGarden · 30/05/2022 13:10

I'm ignoring it. She's only been Queen for 70 years because of the unusual combination of her father's short life and her own very long life. It's a random event, nothing to be celebrated by anyone except her close family.

I cannot get excited about a rich family who happen to be more famous than other rich families.

nearlyspringyay · 30/05/2022 13:12

We're using it as an excuse to have a party, nothing to do with the jubilee.

Sorry that you are struggling op but Sainsbury's selling champagne isn't something new.

cigarettesNalcohol · 30/05/2022 13:13

But some people can afford to celebrate so YABU

TheKeatingFive · 30/05/2022 13:13

If it's any consolation to the republicans, it probably is all downhill from here with regards to support for the monarchy.

Hoardasurass · 30/05/2022 13:15

I am in Scotland and we are not celebrating it nor are the council kids will be in school on Thursday here (are getting the Friday off and the normal Monday).
Honestly I don't know anyone who cares about the monarchy other than dreading the day queeny dies as their will be months of crap with 1st the funeral and then after the mourning Charles's coronation and then William being invested as Prince of Wales and we all know it will be everywhere and unescapeable

dameofdilemma · 30/05/2022 13:15

I sympathise OP.

It does feel a bit like 'lets distract the plebs from the dire economic situation with some bunting and an extra bank holiday'.

Conveniently ignoring the many, many people who will be working throughout (no 4 day break for them).

The many people who will be trying to work out how to afford to feeds their kids over the school holidays (yet again).

In theory, yes, this should be a 'lets all come together as a community' event but the reality is that's hardly likely when people's work and financial circumstances are so very, very different, right now more than ever.
