To be annoyed about the Jubilee

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

I think its pretty special and I'll enjoy it in a low key way.

DontYouLeaveMe · 30/05/2022 13:18

YABU! You don’t have to do anything, but it’s something nice for a change! It’s lovely after all the covid and the war and monkey pox and the cost of living. It’s just something happy. If you don’t want to celebrate then don’t, you don’t have to. You don’t need to spend more, I’ve got the kids to draw some pictures for the windows, they’re putting on their red/white/blue clothes and we are having a mooch around the free events. It doesn’t have to cost

balalake · 30/05/2022 13:22

Supermarket wants to boost sales. Places certain things prominently. You have the option to ignore this marketing. You might wish to express sympathy to the cashier for any grief this may cause her or him.

Even less sympathy if you voted Tory in 2019, or Brexit in 2016.

dottiedodah · 30/05/2022 13:28

I hear you OP! I feel the same TBH. While I like the Queen usually ,for some reason this event leaves me cold .People are at Foodbanks and worried about heating.Even those like most of us, who are not having to worry whether to eat or heat thankfully ,are cautious of spending too much at SB or wherever .Do not want to be greeted by racks of Champagne upon entry thank you very much! One of our neighbours has a bloody flag up!

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 30/05/2022 13:30

I'm just praying it absolutely pisses it down all day.

Well, aren't you just charming.

Fair enough if you don't want to celebrate it yourself, but wishing an unpleasant experience on everyone else in the country is a bit psychotic and narcissistic to be honest.

AlternativePerspective · 30/05/2022 13:32

I presume all those people who are pissed off are also pissed off at getting an extra day off work?

GooglyEyeballs · 30/05/2022 13:33

It's a massive historical event for England and there's always going to be money thrown around when poor people are struggling. That's never going to change, I can't change it I can only change how I live my life, so imo, let's just enjoy the party. Life is too short, I don't want to spend it bitter and angry because I dont have more money. So my neighbours and I are having our humble street party, will toast the Queen and her reign, eat some trifle and be able to look back in 50 years and think, that was a fun party the Jubilee was a great weekend, I'm glad I made the most of it. Instead of, I sat in my house stewing in frustration and anger. What a waste of a summer weekend that would be.

fromdownwest · 30/05/2022 13:34

Are you also annoyed by Christmas promotions, Haloween Promotions, Summer BBQ promotions?
If you don't want to buy champagne then don't. I won't be celebrating, as I am pretty apathetic about it all, but I don't feel angered by it.
The current shower of sh*te sat in 10 downing street would be more reason to be angry, the Queen is the least of my concerns!

fyn · 30/05/2022 13:34

@PuppyMonkey what money do you contribute to the queen? The sovereign grant comes from money raised from the Crown Estates, of which the Queen takes a percentage for upkeep to palaces etc… and the majority goes to the Treasury?

Cattoes · 30/05/2022 13:36

You're not being unreasonable. Thankfully I'm in a part of Wales where no one gives a monkeys about the jubilee.

alfagirl73 · 30/05/2022 13:36

I get where you're coming from but ultimately, no one is forced to celebrate it.

People weren't exactly rolling in it at the time of the Coronation and the celebrations then certainly weren't elaborate. There were lots of street parties etc. at the end of WWII when everyone was still on rations and barely had two pennies to rub together. In fact, rationing did not end completely until after the Coronation. There was a pride in managing to come together and celebrate in spite of life's challenges - even if it was a very simple affair.

From what I understand, many people this week are having parties based on more simple ideas of 70 years ago - a few sandwiches and a cake type of thing.

If you're not into the monarchy etc... and don't want to celebrate the jubilee then that is your choice - simply enjoy the extra day off - or not. It's your choice what you do with the day or how much you join in with the jubilee festivities.

Personally I think it's quite lovely and with all the doom and gloom in the world, I see no harm in people enjoying an extra day off work and celebrating with a few sarnies & a bit of cake. If anyone's budget stretches to a bottle of bubbly - then I say crack on and enjoy it! Life is too bloody short and after the last few years, if people want to use the Jubilee as an excuse for a party and a reason to smile, then I'm certainly not going to judge them for it.

I'm not a royalist but this is an event of historical significance. There almost certainly won't be another in the lifetime of anyone who sees this one (unless tragedy strikes within the present line of succession). The circumstances that allowed it to happen - the early death of George VI - are less likely to occur in the future given medical advances. So I am going to take an interest and attend some local, free events, to be 'part of history.'

Much the same view here.

I do hope the monarchy crumbles once she is gone though

FictionalCharacter · 30/05/2022 12:46

People can celebrate or celebrate as they wish. Nobody has to buy champagne.
The cost of this extremely rare event is a minute drop in the ocean of the country’s expenditure. IMO there are much worse ways in which public money, a lot more money, is being wasted.

This. It’s the longest reign in British history and I feel quite privileged to be alive when it happens.

BlueKaftan · 30/05/2022 13:38

I don’t care so much about the specific situation but I do love a bank holiday weekend with sunshine and people out enjoying themselves.

summermode · 30/05/2022 13:38

Long weekend and an excuse to celebrate for some people are designed to boost consumption and hopefully economy a bit.

TheKeatingFive · 30/05/2022 13:39

The crown estates are public money and could be much better deployed.

Don't be silly. I'm not wishing an unpleasant day on everyone else in the country. Just those foolish enough to celebrate the monarchy.

vivainsomnia · 30/05/2022 13:40

I think it's an amazing accomplishment. 70 years of never be able to be totally herself, I wouldn't have traded my life for hers.

You don't need to spend money to celebrate. Will be going to town to watch whatever celebration it offers. I won't be drinking champagne but will still get in the spirit no penny poorer.

TheVanguardSix · 30/05/2022 13:41

I'm not feeling it at all and can't wait for the circus to roll through.

MintyMoocow · 30/05/2022 13:42

CreamyBruley · 30/05/2022 13:06

Same - I cannot understand why we are celebrating the jubilee of such an awful woman tbh.

I keep seeing a poster for a party at my local park and I'm just praying it absolutely pisses it down all day.

This is a vile thing to say really.
Why do you hate the human race so much?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 30/05/2022 13:43

Just those foolish enough to celebrate the monarchy.

I assume you'll be going into work on Thursday and Friday as normal then?

TheVanguardSix · 30/05/2022 13:43

It’s the longest reign in British history and I feel quite privileged to be alive when it happens.

On the flipside of my 'meh'ness, I feel the same. It's pretty great being a witness to this. I'm not really pro or anti monarchy. I do like your queen.

I will actually yes.

Well no, I'll be off on Friday as I would have been anyway. Is there anything else you'd like to know about my diary for this week?

5foot5 · 30/05/2022 13:45

I keep seeing a poster for a party at my local park and I'm just praying it absolutely pisses it down all day.

Wow I think this is one of the most mean spirited things I have ever read on here.

It's one thing to avoid celebrating something yourself but to hope for somebody else's day to be ruined too is a new low.

Benjispruce4 · 30/05/2022 13:45

No royalist celebration here. School staff so not even a bank holiday it’s Whitsun anyway!
