To think holidays with kids are SHIT

Holibollocks · 28/05/2022 15:46

Caveat: I know we are really really lucky to be able to afford to go on holiday.

But. WTAF??! Why is this so shit?!! Kids are 4 and 8 and this is the first 'big' holiday we've been on. Previously it's always been camping or self catering-didn't go away at all during covid and I'm a nurse so we felt like it was worth splashing out a bit for a half term break and we've gone for an all inclusive thing.

Anyway, we're 2 days in and to be honest it would be easier being at work. Every single tiny little thing they have whinged and moaned and complained and then when I thought they couldn't complain anymore they've somehow managed it. Constant fucking requests that go beyond anything I've experienced with them at home...followed by more whinging. So far it's shit. Expensive shit.

What am I doing wrong?? What is the secret to making this a great holiday?

There's a lot of strawman scenarios being thrown about here. What if I told you you can want to spend quality time with your kids and do culturally and physically enriching activities with your kids AND have a sneaky hour of alone time and a cheeky cocktail (not get wasted) AND all have a boogie together at the evening entertainment???? I'm planning all of the above on our holiday in a few weeks. No need for judgemental comments on either side...

You said:

"who said anything about getting blinding drunk?? Cos I didn’t!"

But I posted:

"But then when they became adults they and their friends weren't the types to go off to the likes of Ibiza or Zante for drunken binges."

And you replied:

"what’s wrong with that kind of holiday when you’re young? I did it. My husband did it. Most of my friends did it."

Perhaps "drunken binge" means something different from "getting blinding drunk" to you.

JustDanceAddict · 30/05/2022 17:44

Best holidays with young kids have been either:
-going with other family members so they can help
-going w friends so you’re all in it together
-where there’s a kids club

Going away w ds as a toddler was awful as he was such a fussy eater, now as an 18 year old he’s turned that on it’s head and appreciates good cooking 😆

Even now we all like different types of holiday - DS is still the hardest to please.

I said that in reference to your comment about your teens who didn’t go to clubs when younger not being the type to go on boozy holidays to Ibiza. I was saying what’s so wrong about going on those kind of holidays?

oh well, he’s an adult now you don’t have to worry about pleasing him. He can go on holiday with his mates.

Loved holidays with our DC, loved their little sun kissed faces from the beach, loved the relaxed no chores or homework, loved the lazy breakfasts.

Sorry to disappoint others!

But you’re not spending every hour of every day with your kids especially if you work full time (I do too, it’s not a dig just an observation). I look forward to holidays with my children to have that quality time together as usual work/school days are pretty busy for us. I also love watching them experience things for the first time, chatting to them about things we have seen and done and generally making memories. If I want a holiday without children then I would rather not drag them along and shove them in another form of childcare.

This 💯

So passive aggressive and unnecessary.

Stop being so reasonable dammit

Blarting · 30/05/2022 19:42

@LittleBearPad why is that PA, I loved the holidays when they were small, I worked full tone and loved spending whole days together when on holiday . I won't apologise for that and it's not bloody unnecessary.

Not my fault others don't enjoy it.

Exactly, look at @LittleBearPad post, apparently I'm
PA for enjoying holidays!

saraclara · 30/05/2022 19:56

Good grief. OP didn't post on an advice branch, begging for help with how to make her kids behave and have a nice holiday. She posted on AIBU. Which is about getting alternative opinions as well as some back up. The posters accusing those of us with an alternative view of either being PA, or unsympathetic, or tactless, or unnecessary, or even lying, seem to have totally missed the point of AIBU.

Did you not put sun cream on them??

Abso-fucking-lutely!!

Blarting · 30/05/2022 20:35

@LuckySantangelo35 of course that's why they were sun kissed and not burnt? What an odd question? I presume you're another hater of holidays with your children?

FYI, we are all a very light skinned family, so no sun cream would've been really bad and potentially a cause of skin cancer in the future. So I was ultra careful, sun kissed doesn't mean burnt.

Blarting · 30/05/2022 20:38

@LuckySantangelo35 maybe you were too blinding drink to deal with sun cream, I wasn't.

@LuckySantangelo35 harsh but true, you need to own it!

LuckySantangelo35 · 30/05/2022 20:51

@Blarting

Oh look… we can’t all be as you perfect as you.

You who has never been on a boozy Ibiza
/magaluff/Malia holiday in her teens/twenties,

You who in later life has perfect well behaving,
children who love travelling,

You who is such a great mother that they never, ever crave a few hours child-free to have a few cocktails in the sun round the pool.

You are amazing and virtuous and I can only ever dream of being like you.

Is that what you want to hear?

@Blarting

Oh I’m owning it girl! Zero regrets here.

The fact that I loved a boozy Ibiza trip in my late teens/twenties and now in my thirties like to have my kids in kids clubs so I can please myself for a few hours does not mean that I cannot put sun cream on my kids!

Its called unclenching and living life! Life is short so you’d really wanna try it 😀

Coffeepants · 31/05/2022 00:45

Apparently if we don’t hate holidays with our children, we are PA, holier than though and judgmental. No one is judging you or actually cares what you do with your family on your holidays. But accept that some people actually choose holidays with their children and enjoy them without feeling they need a break or to have a drink child free at the pool.
