To wear a real fur coat

Seasidesunday · 31/03/2022 21:12

Off to the revival and have found a real 1950s vintage dress all picked out it needs a few bits mended but it’s perfect. I need some kind of 1950s shawl or coat to go with it As I get cold easily. I was thinking of buying one but then realised my mum had my grandmas real fur stole and a few coats in storage. Im very against real fur normally but as it’s a vintage event and already an old coat would it be ok.

I would!

Wren44 · 31/03/2022 21:19

I personally wouldn’t. Even a few decades ago, perhaps it was more acceptable because fur coats were truly one of the best ways to stay warm during very cold winters. But these days, there is amazing science behind winter coats that will keep you more warm than any fur could. This in turn means no animals have to suffer for what is now no more than a very cruel and unnecessary fashion statement, vintage or not.

sjxoxo · 31/03/2022 21:22

I think it’s not really acceptable now..sorry! I work in vintage clothing & we no longer sell vintage fur as it doesn’t sell - I think times have moved on. My friend said to me “yes ok it’s vintage but if someone saw you in it & liked it you’ve encouraged it.. you’re still advocating it if you’re wearing it”. I think there’s some truth in that x

Thesefeetaremadeforwalking · 31/03/2022 21:22

It's your choice whether you wear it or not, as long as you remember that it's original owner died in it.

ThreeLittleDots · 31/03/2022 21:22

I would find it offensive to look at, sorry

WhenDovesFly · 31/03/2022 21:22

Nope, I wouldn't. You either have principals or you don't. You shouldn't just switch them off because "it's a vintage event".

WeDontShutUpAboutBruno · 31/03/2022 21:23

You're not 'very against' real fur if you think wearing it is OK as long as it fits the theme for a party.

Wear it if you like, nobody would notice it was real (probably) but own your decisions. /beliefs.

Lockheart · 31/03/2022 21:23

If you want to wear it then wear it. The coat is decades old, not wearing it won't make the animals any less dead.

But then by that logic we should disapprove of faux fur just as much. It's the same look that you're advocating.
fairylightsandwaxmelts · 31/03/2022 21:25

It's fine. It's not like you've gone out and shot a fox for it.

It's 50+ years old - I really don't see the issue.

Precipice · 31/03/2022 21:25

No problem with wearing the fur and no need to agonise about it either.

Saz12 · 31/03/2022 21:26

It’s a bit like advocating it - “ooh, this is beautiful material, I want one just like it!” to people who won’t care about the cruelty as much as they care about their clothes.
But it does seem hugely wasteful to buy something new just for one event!

Eloise666 · 31/03/2022 21:26

A bit like all leather and suede.
stevalnamechanger · 31/03/2022 21:26

It's vintage

It's a vintage event - lots of people will be wearing vintage furs rather than nasty cheap none biodegradable faux

Who cares , wear it ! Have a fab time

LeastofLeicester · 31/03/2022 21:27

If you don't wear it that poor animal died for no reason!

RagingRagingAndMoreRaging · 31/03/2022 21:27

I am sorry to say that I don’t think it’s right to. Glamourising fur doesn’t help to eradicate its use. Wearing them rubs the risk of fuelling more demand.

Animal sanctuaries use them to help settle orphaned animals. That’s what we did with a fur coat left in the house we bought. It felt like the only right thing to do - give it back to the animal world.

saleorbouy · 31/03/2022 21:27

It's dead already and has been for a long time. Personally I'd deem it a wasted death if it's not used and loved.
I'm not keen on the continuation of the fur trade bit I don't think it's offensive to wear vintage fur.
Animals die for leather and sheep skin, there will be plenty sporting garments of these materials so crack on.

PebbleMillAtOne · 31/03/2022 21:28

So you against fur normally but you think it’s ok in this instance
Make your mind up
It’s wrong to hit someone but Will Smith did it so it’s ok in this instance

LittleDidSheKnow · 31/03/2022 21:28

Wearing fur would be to show acceptance of it, and to give it some credibility.

But then by that logic we should disapprove of faux fur just as much. It's the same look that you're advocating

It's not the "look" is it? It's the fact that it is an animal thats been killed to make it. Fake fur isn't. That's pretty obvious, surely?

RantyAunty · 31/03/2022 21:29

You don't have to say it's real.
The little animal it was made from would be long gone anyway.

Mosaic123 · 31/03/2022 21:29

Just pretend it's fake if anyone asks.

I have a mink jacket that was my Mum's. I have worn it only once, with jeans, on a snowy day and to a smart antique fair.

I was treated very graciously by the dealers there. I think they thought I was a wealthy foreign visitor.

I can't bring myself to wear it again.

NotNowBoris · 31/03/2022 21:30

I think its ok to wear fur if its vintage personally. May as well be keeping someone warm than hidden away at the back of a wardrobe.

LapinR0se · 31/03/2022 21:30

I eat meat, or fish, or dairy or eggs
I wear cashmere, or angora and/or leather

If you do ANY of these and object to wearing fur then you are a hypocrite

Time40 · 31/03/2022 21:30

I would think you'd be less likely to shouted at or insulted for it at a vintage event, so if you're feeling brave, go for it.

It makes me angry that people think they can dictate to others what to wear. It should be a matter of personal choice. I feel that destroying vintage furs is a stupid waste - it's much more environmentally friendly to wear it: it saves resources.

Aprilx · 31/03/2022 21:32

Your comment that you are “very against fur usually” is really dumb. You cannot be very against something unless you have a party to go to.
