To wear a real fur coat

Seasidesunday · 31/03/2022 21:12

Off to the revival and have found a real 1950s vintage dress all picked out it needs a few bits mended but it’s perfect. I need some kind of 1950s shawl or coat to go with it As I get cold easily. I was thinking of buying one but then realised my mum had my grandmas real fur stole and a few coats in storage. Im very against real fur normally but as it’s a vintage event and already an old coat would it be ok.

Have I fuck. Get a grip.

It's just saying that just because something already exists it doesn't mean it's ok to use it.

Agreed
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/04/2022 10:36

Well our cat wears one and no-one bats an eyelid.

Lady089 · 01/04/2022 10:40

@Lockheart

China is a major export of fur and considering many of these animals are skinned alive, it’s enough to make an ethical enough decision, not to wear fur. It shouldn’t be a case of not all countries do it because you still don’t know where the fur has come from and the life it lived and suffered, no animal rightly should be skinned alive but it’s clear it happens within the fur industry. Many countries also anally electrocute, bludgeon, gas etc animals, all in the name of fashion, if you don’t agree with this, then you simply should not wear or buy it.

@CapMarvel

They don't make golliwogs anymore so it's fine to display the ones we find in granny's loft, right?

Making a comparison to racism as some kind of gotcha. Not the same and tiresome.

The problem with fur is funding unnecessary killing. That's not the case here because it's vintage.

The problem with golliwogs is perpetuating harmful and offensive stereotypes - which has no time limit.

Picklequeen88 · 01/04/2022 14:19

@LeastofLeicester god I hope you're being sarcastic!

"Making a comparison to racism as some kind of gotcha. Not the same and tiresome. "

The point being, fairly obviously, that opinions change over time and just because an offensive thing already exists doesn't make it ok to display/wear it. Yes, the coat was made 50 years ago. Yes, the animal is already dead but it's still a statement that says "yup, I'm fine with wearing fur".

This isn't difficult to understand.

But for fur there are two positions you could take.
 1. Clothing made of animal fur is inherently immoral.

 2. It is immoral to kill animals to make clothing.

Wearing vintage fur only clashes with one of those positions. Many people take position (2) and are quite comfortable with vintage fur.

It's difficult to formulate a sensible position on golliwogs which can accommodate old golliwogs but no new ones.

loopylindi · 01/04/2022 14:32

Not fur, but I've got a necklace made from ivory. I was given it ages ago but not long enough ago to make it OK (as if it ever was) I've never worn it, can't give it away or donate it. But it does seem wrong to even consider throwing it in the waste.

Why not just say that then? Or pick a better comparison?

Animals die for leather and sheep skin

Well yes, but those are a by-product of the meat industry which would otherwise go to waste. Not really the same as catching a wild (often endangered) animal and killing it just so some woman can look pretty wearing its fur.

Witchcraftandhokum · 01/04/2022 14:46

I couldn't, I wouldn't want to be friends with anyone that did, but ultimately it's your choice.

YANBU

I inherited some taxidermy and have it out on display. I can't magically bring it back to life 🤷

TenRedThings · 01/04/2022 15:59

You could always pimp it up with some fake blood and a couple of traps !

HighOnPie · 01/04/2022 16:21

I wouldn’t. Fur looks bloody awful on humans, it’s incredibly ageing. It looks amazing on the original owner, though.

Some animals are killed solely for their skin, not for the purposes of eating, ie zebras, bison, water buffaloes, boars, deer, eels, seals, walrus, etc
Branleuse · 01/04/2022 16:25

@Discodanny

I couldn’t and I wouldn’t. An animals has suffered for it. I don’t think it’s comparable to suede or leather (which I don’t buy either anyway).
How is it not comparable? The only difference is the fluffiness
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/04/2022 16:28

you don’t seem to have a clue as to how cashmere and angora are produced. They are NOT the same as fur where you actually kill the animal, not shave off their coat, like wool. Doh

Angora isn't combed or shaved , it is hoiked out by swift fingered fur strippers .

Poor blighters probably wish they had been killed because as soon as that fur grows back ........................... it goes through the same process .

And yes , it's not a single mink , it;s 50-60+
Kept in a cage ( walking on wires) often gassed or electrocuted
To adorn the back of a vain human.
Sad life . Tragic.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/04/2022 16:29

Same here (and they think their black fur is slimming too Wink )

So? Animals are still being raised and killed in order to satisfy human tastes. I am not convinced the cow with its shitty short miserable life and hideous execution finds it any consolation that her skin is a byproduct.
Loveabathtub · 01/04/2022 16:45

I have been to the Revival for the past seven years. Around 40-50% of women wear real fur, all look vintage to me. Vintage furs are also sold there by the dozen too. You won't look or feel out of place at all, in fact you will find you fit in perfectly. Enjoy your day. I love it there. Smile

DdraigGoch · 01/04/2022 23:24
@DdraigGoch

Type, animals skinned alive for fur into Google and click images, that should answer your question. Not only that many are kept in inhumane conditions, suffering mental and physical distress.
@Lady089 clickbait videos from PETA do not constitute reliable evidence. I would like to see an independent report before believing such wild claims. Until that point I shall continue to presume them staged.

Inhumane conditions, yes - animal rights isn't exactly China's strong point, and even in Denmark conditions will be cramped. Skinning alive however is not a normal practice (no, not even in China. Again, why would you do it? You're not going to get an intact, clean pelt by trying to get it off of a wriggling animal which is trying to bite you. You'll also get blood everywhere which again is going to damage the pelt and reduce the price.

I don't support fur farming. However I see no harm in continuing to use second hand garments. Nor do I see any harm in using the skins of animals that were being killed anyway, whether that was because they have ended up on our dinner plates, or where they were culled to control numbers.

Anystarinthesky · 01/04/2022 23:29

No way.

XenoBitch · 01/04/2022 23:39

I don't know what Revival is.. I gather an event where attendees wear vintage clothing.
You already have the fur coat, the damage is done. What would be gained by burying it ( as some have suggested).
I don't see it any different to leather tbh, and no one would bat an eye at you wearing that.
Even modern faux fur is virtually indistinguishable from the real
thing now.

Viviennemary · 01/04/2022 23:41

No. It is a bad look these days.
