To wear a real fur coat

Seasidesunday · 31/03/2022 21:12

Off to the revival and have found a real 1950s vintage dress all picked out it needs a few bits mended but it’s perfect. I need some kind of 1950s shawl or coat to go with it As I get cold easily. I was thinking of buying one but then realised my mum had my grandmas real fur stole and a few coats in storage. Im very against real fur normally but as it’s a vintage event and already an old coat would it be ok.

I wouldn't be comfortable wearing it. I'd give it away, there used to be a charity collection for old furs.

LadyHooHa · 31/03/2022 21:34

The animals are long since dead, and you had nothing to do with their deaths. I wouldn't buy a new one, but I wear the ones I inherited or was given. They're warm, for starters. I wouldn't wear them if I were meeting a vegetarian friend, though, as that would feel a bit as if I were making a silly/bolshy statement.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 31/03/2022 21:35

When my dgm died she had so many.. Her df had been a furrier...
Sad
No idea what happened to them but I do remember stroking them in her wardrobe as a young dc..
Don't wear it op. Surely that smacks of approval for them?

Ceph · 31/03/2022 21:37

Wear it. I would.
Vintage clothing is valued for its style, quality and fit. It would be more of a waste not to wear it and keep it locked away and for it to go mouldy.
Yes, it is of animal origin and there's a lot of emotion around wearing it, and a lot less than wearing leather, suede, etc.
In addition, only those in the know would recognise it's true origin as opposed to the microplastic generating faux versions available now.
Have fun!

CaMePlaitPas · 31/03/2022 21:39

I mean, the mink is already dead, it's a coat, might as well wear it out of respect.

SickAndTiredAgain · 31/03/2022 21:39

It’s less wasteful than buying something else just for this event.
And I don’t think it really encourages it, I doubt most people could tell a real fur coat by looking (at a normal distance, I know you can tell if you look closely) - if I ever see someone with a fur coat/collar/hat etc I assume it’s fake anyway.

HotnSunnyRainbowRoses · 31/03/2022 21:40

I don’t really get the outrage over vintage fur tbh.

Killing creatures just for their fur doesn’t sit right with me but no one bats an eyelid at people with leather sofas or wearing a sheepskin coat and ultimately an animal still died to produce it.

Faux fur is basically plastic and toxic and damaging to the environment to produce.
In environmental terms, I think natural fur is a great deal better than faux but as I said, I don’t think it’s right to kill an animal just for fur but I do think the hides of animals killed for meat like cows, sheep, rabbits etc should be used for clothing/furnishings instead of being wasted.

I’d wear the stole OP and just tell people it’s faux if you suspect they’ll get shitty

dworky · 31/03/2022 21:40

Those against wearing fur wouldn't even consider wearing it.
Your principle has no substance.

Georgeskitchen · 31/03/2022 21:43

You would be fine wearing it in the Arctic circle!!

lljkk · 31/03/2022 21:44

Higher crime for it to go to waste.

bottleofbeer · 31/03/2022 21:45

No, don't be a fucking knob

sausagepastapot · 31/03/2022 21:46

Totally fine! Enjoy the party.

Supersimkin2 · 31/03/2022 21:48

Virtue-signalling to turn your nose up at it. Better for the planet to bite the bullet and put it on rather than buy new.

MurmuratingStarling · 31/03/2022 21:49
Hmm
MurmuratingStarling · 31/03/2022 21:52

@Aprilx

Your comment that you are “very against fur usually” is really dumb. You cannot be very against something unless you have a party to go to.
This exactly. Like a vegan I know who is one of the pious preachy ones, but happily wears leather trousers and a leather jacket, and says it's OK 'because they're second hand...' Hmm

Disingenuous much?! Hmm (Like the OP!)

Iloveyourbracelet · 31/03/2022 21:52

Is it better to throw those old furs into landfill, or better to use them until they're worn out?

MangyInseam · 31/03/2022 21:53

@LittleDidSheKnow

Wearing fur would be to show acceptance of it, and to give it some credibility.

But then by that logic we should disapprove of faux fur just as much. It's the same look that you're advocating

It's not the "look" is it? It's the fact that it is an animal thats been killed to make it. Fake fur isn't. That's pretty obvious, surely?

Read the post the OP replied to, that was exactly the point it was making.
DialsMavis · 31/03/2022 21:53

I dont understand why people will wear leather but not fur. Especially new leather over vintage fur. I don't wear either but really dont see the distinction. Crack on and dont let it go to waste

SilverSplitsTheBlue · 31/03/2022 21:55

@LapinR0se

I eat meat, or fish, or dairy or eggs I wear cashmere, or angora and/or leather

If you do ANY of these and object to wearing fur then you are a hypocrite

Absolutely agree.
DialsMavis · 31/03/2022 21:55

I also think it's fine to wear 2nd hand leather, its already dead, the vegan mentioned above isn't causing the animal to die and is preventing waste.

Guineapigssweak · 31/03/2022 21:55

No not ever! Most animals are skinned alive for their coats! Bury it instead.

MangyInseam · 31/03/2022 21:56

@Aprilx

She's against the continuation of fur farming.

Wearing a vintage coat doesn't support fur farming. Especially to a costume party where it won't be a generalized style statement.

Frankly it is better for animals than a synthetic coat at this point.

CapMarvel · 31/03/2022 21:56

"Im very against real fur normally"

Are you? Because saying that and then wearing a fur coat is just like saying "I'm a vegan except for big macs".

Of course you shouldn't wear it.

SweetPetrichor · 31/03/2022 21:58

I’d happily wear vintage fur. No point wasting it imo. When my gran died my mum was clearing out her cupboards and there was a vintage fur coat. I’d have taken it but it’d never have fitted so instead she wanted to donate it..nowhere would take it. Then she thought maybe it could be used to make cosy beds at an animal sanctuary but they didn’t want it either. I don’t know what ended up happening with it but it was such a shame. The animals we produced the cot won’t get any less dead. It should be worn and loved.

Gladioli23 · 31/03/2022 21:59

I eat meat and wear leather so I just can't get myself in a tizz about vintage fur.

My fur jacket is rabbit where I suspect the rabbits will have been eaten anyway. It's fabulously warm and yes you can get a winter coat that is equivalently warm but I don't think I could locate an equivalently warm evening coat.
