To wear a real fur coat

Off to the revival and have found a real 1950s vintage dress all picked out it needs a few bits mended but it’s perfect. I need some kind of 1950s shawl or coat to go with it As I get cold easily. I was thinking of buying one but then realised my mum had my grandmas real fur stole and a few coats in storage. Im very against real fur normally but as it’s a vintage event and already an old coat would it be ok.

I know loads of people that wear fur. Why people would rather fur to be thrown away rather than used is beyond me. It’s absolutely no different to leather.

Lockheart · 31/03/2022 21:59

@Guineapigssweak

No not ever! Most animals are skinned alive for their coats! Bury it instead.
Do you have any statistics to back that up?

There are some horrific videos on the internet, it is true. Many coming from out of China. But it's a big jump to go from video nasties to "most animals are skinned alive". This is illegal in many countries, for good reason!

Fireintheloft · 31/03/2022 22:00

If I saw you in it I'd assume it was faux and not pay any attention to it. If I'd brushed against you in it however my mind would be consumed with how the animals had died for it. I wouldn't say anything but it would definitely play on my mind that some folk still condone the fur trade. By wearing it ( vintage or not is unimportant) that is the statement you make - are you good with that ?

RewildingAmbridge · 31/03/2022 22:03

My gran has two furs they were her grandmother's and then her mother's. She rarely wears them, can't bring herself to throw them away or sell them but she did wear one for an event a few years ago and just told people it was faux fur...

skodadoda · 31/03/2022 22:06

@Lockheart

If you want to wear it then wear it. The coat is decades old, not wearing it won't make the animals any less dead.
Agreed
WhenISnappedAndFarted · 31/03/2022 22:06

@WhenDovesFly

Nope, I wouldn't. You either have principals or you don't. You shouldn't just switch them off because "it's a vintage event".
This.
Kbr22 · 31/03/2022 22:07

I have just given 3 mink coats to a Ukraine Charity, I got after my MIL had died. I or my daughter would wear them but I didn't want to throw them away. The Charity said they would very happily take them and the recipients would be very grateful x

WheekestLink · 31/03/2022 22:09

I'd ask myself if I would wear leather. Both industries are equally as cruel.

WheekestLink · 31/03/2022 22:11

Posted too soon! If you would buy a new pair of leather boots, what's wrong with wearing an old fur coat? Personally, I would wear it.

NippyWoowoo · 31/03/2022 22:12

This really
Justleaveitblankthen · 31/03/2022 22:13

@LeastofLeicester

If you don't wear it that poor animal died for no reason!

Not just one poor animal unfortunately. Dozens of them will be killed in the process of making just one coat.
Vile. Unless you are native Inuit, They are also not the warmest thing to wear in Winter Hmm

LardyDee · 31/03/2022 22:14

Yes, not a problem.

Abaababa · 31/03/2022 22:15

@LapinR0se

I eat meat, or fish, or dairy or eggs I wear cashmere, or angora and/or leather

If you do ANY of these and object to wearing fur then you are a hypocrite

I don’t do any of these but you don’t seem to have a clue as to how cashmere and angora are produced. They are NOT the same as fur where you actually kill the animal, not shave off their coat, like wool. Doh.
BaileysBreakfast · 31/03/2022 22:19

Lifelong vegetarian- have also been vegan for a few years. I wouldn’t be offended if you wore it near me. Fur is beautiful. I obviously wouldn’t buy it but inherited is different

DogsDryWineAndCheese · 31/03/2022 22:20

If you don't wear it that poor animal died for no reason!

Exactly.

I’d view it more as a bi-product, like leather.

Momijin · 31/03/2022 22:21

I'm a vegan but it would be wasteful but to use it. We have a huge issue with clothes going to landfill. Mostly it is better to use and mend stuff until it can not longer be used than buy new. (I'm also an environmentalist)

DogsDryWineAndCheese · 31/03/2022 22:23

Your comment that you are “very against fur usually” is really dumb. You cannot be very against something unless you have a party to go to.

Arguably, your comment is much dumber.
Obviously the added element to consider here is the era that this coat was made. Not wearing it to a vintage party wont suddenly revive the animals and see them hopping across the horizon.
You can be against fur coats being made now and still see it as wasteful to burn ones that already exist Hmm

Discodanny · 31/03/2022 22:24

I couldn’t and I wouldn’t. An animals has suffered for it. I don’t think it’s comparable to suede or leather (which I don’t buy either anyway).

Ottolin3 · 31/03/2022 22:30

I wear fur, it’s more sustainable and environmentally friendly than fast fashion faux fur. A large quantity of faux fur is made from modacrylic which is toxic and Polyester which is made from polyacrylonitriles, a material which has strong links to cancer and produces high levels of pollution. Well cared for fur can last lifetimes, which is exactly what I intend to do.

Ownedbymycats · 31/03/2022 22:30

I'd feel the burden of the misery inflicted on those poor creatures and I'm not sure the vintage aspect lessens that.

GirlsTalk250 · 31/03/2022 22:34

If it’s the Goodwood Revival you’re going to in September, a lot of people wear vintage fur there. You won’t look out of place. It has also been on sale there in previous years.

I personally wouldn’t wear it, but don’t have an issue with others wearing vintage fur.

Madre123 · 31/03/2022 22:36

Absolutely no

Suzi888 · 31/03/2022 22:37

I’ve a friend who is vegan and wears fur. She just doesn’t want to put dead things in her mouth.

Meat eaters have very disappointed conversations when they’re hoping to be goady towards her veganism, only to find out she doesn’t give a toss about animals- bless ‘em for trying though!

I wouldn’t personally wear fur- real or faux I think it looks dreadful but each to their own.

LaurieFairyCake · 31/03/2022 22:41

I'd never wear new fur as it's every kind of wrong but I have my great grandmothers fur from 1918 which I wear

The rabbits been dead more than a hundred years and I'm far more concerned about re using it and the environmental benefits of that than anything else

The idea of throwing it out when it can be used is much worse

The point is not to create NEW demand for fur so that animals are tortured and die needlessly

SteakExpectations · 31/03/2022 22:42

I have a real, vintage, fur coat and I wear it to vintage events.

IMO it’s better to be worn and enjoyed than being in landfill.

I am against the modern day fur trade and believe that new clothing should be made with synthetic fabrics.
