To wear a real fur coat

Off to the revival and have found a real 1950s vintage dress all picked out it needs a few bits mended but it’s perfect. I need some kind of 1950s shawl or coat to go with it As I get cold easily. I was thinking of buying one but then realised my mum had my grandmas real fur stole and a few coats in storage. Im very against real fur normally but as it’s a vintage event and already an old coat would it be ok.

It wouldn't be morally wrong to wear an ancient fur coat because you didn't buy it and therefore aren't encouraging more fur production.

However: personally I feel a genuine revulsion for real fur clothing, as I can't help dwelling on the suffering that the animals are likely to have gone through to produce it. It really isn't comparable to leather. Be prepared for others to feel the same.

Mamapep · 31/03/2022 22:50

The coat already exists so it’s a waste not to wear it in my opinion.. better for the environment than buying a new faux one.

PyongyangKipperbang · 31/03/2022 22:55

I think vintage fur should be worn, it was made at a time when it was acceptable and binning it will not bring the animal back. New fur would be a massive no for me, and I was very concerned when I read a while back that a lot of things sold as "fake" fur are actually real fur because the market for real fur has fallen through the floor so a lot of manufacturers are using their stocks of the real thing Shock

stevalnamechanger · 01/04/2022 07:24

@LapinR0se

I eat meat, or fish, or dairy or eggs I wear cashmere, or angora and/or leather

If you do ANY of these and object to wearing fur then you are a hypocrite

Do it you will look fab. I got my mums fox out recently for an event. It was a vintage fur revival.

DebenhamsHadSomeLovelyStuff · 01/04/2022 07:36

I wear mine. I'm not going to buy lots of different cheap coats that end up as landfill
I've never had a rude comment, it's warm, waterproof and does the job it was intended to do many years ago
Wear it @Seasidesunday

ChillysWaterBottle · 01/04/2022 08:10

I absolutely wouldn't

rhowton · 01/04/2022 08:22

I'll never understand why people who happily eat meat, are against fur.

EishetChayil · 01/04/2022 08:27

Disgusting.

I would no more wear animal fur than I would a skin coat made from a human.

elbea · 01/04/2022 08:28

@SoftSheen why isn’t it comparable to leather? People eat things like rabbit, especially 100+ years ago nothing would have gone to waste. Surely it is better to use as much of the animal as you can rather that throw it away and make horrible, polluting plastic instead

caringcarer · 01/04/2022 08:29

I would not buy fur but this animal is long dead and not wearing coat won't bring it back to life. Wear it and enjoy it. Vintage fur is ok to wear or else animal died for no reason at all.

RosieTheHat · 01/04/2022 08:30

Absolutely wouldn't. It's barbaric

Amelion · 01/04/2022 08:30

I wouldn’t.

It normalises fur wearing - the more people see others wearing fur, the more it seems acceptable.

It’s become more acceptable now than it was - so many of those gross Canada Goose coats with coyote fur trim around - and part of that IMO is because the more people do it, the more acceptable to society it seems.

So if you’re against fur generally I’d stay away from all fur including vintage fur.

FloralsForSpring · 01/04/2022 08:34

Up to you. I wouldn't.

dottiedodah · 01/04/2022 08:41

I wouldn't personally. I had a fur stole given by my aunt in the 70s .I used to dress up as a little girl. No way would I wear it now.i think it normalises something which is unacceptable to most people today.if you lived in the artic might be different. Lots of lovely vintage scarves or wraps in wool or silk surely

Picklypickles · 01/04/2022 08:44

No, I don't understand how anyone even thinks they look good, fur tends to only look nice on animals. People wearing fur coats always look like silly little fat yetis who probably have fleas, its not a good look.

Branleuse · 01/04/2022 08:46

I would. I dont see it as much different to wearing leather, sheepskin or eating meat

stripeyflowers · 01/04/2022 08:47

I just wouldn't want to wear it, I wouldn't feel right in it. But in these circumstances you stated, I wouldn't think badly of you for wearing it. As someone said, the little animals are long gone.

JudgeRindersMinder · 01/04/2022 08:47

@Lockheart

If you want to wear it then wear it. The coat is decades old, not wearing it won't make the animals any less dead.
This is how I see it, but you’re going to have to be prepared for negative reactions
Grantanow · 01/04/2022 08:49

I noticed on visits to Central and Eastern Europe that fur wearing is far more common than here in the UK. Colder weather, climate change or what?

Astrak · 01/04/2022 08:59

I would not wear it for two reasons:

  1. The last owner died whilst wearing it.
  2. I don't support live or farmed animals being killed for their skins.
I am a vegetarian. I don't eat eggs, fish, butter or cheese. I have a thirty-five year old shearling lamb leather coat. The cat sleeps on it.
zlister · 01/04/2022 09:04

Wear it.

I'd be mindful of caring good for fur though as in moths and washing the garment is a pain. Hence why I won't buy vintage fur, too much work for something you wear a few times a year

ChaToilLeam · 01/04/2022 09:11

I’d wear a vintage fur to a vintage event. Binning it wouldn’t bring the poor animal back. But I won’t buy new and wouldn’t wear it outside of vintage. Not that I think anyone is going to be encouraged and emboldened by my style-setting, I’m a grey haired middle aged woman, not a glamorous Instagram influencer.

Incidentally I once got harassed by animal rights activists while wearing a leopard coat. It belonged to my grandmother and was an extremely good quality fake. Proudly showed them the label inside confirming it.

Lockheart · 01/04/2022 09:17

Well that's a lovely way to describe first nation peoples...
EthelTheAardvark · 01/04/2022 09:21

@LeastofLeicester

If you don't wear it that poor animal died for no reason!
I doubt that the animal feels better for having died in order to have its skin made into a coat.
