To wear a real fur coat

Seasidesunday · 31/03/2022 21:12

Off to the revival and have found a real 1950s vintage dress all picked out it needs a few bits mended but it’s perfect. I need some kind of 1950s shawl or coat to go with it As I get cold easily. I was thinking of buying one but then realised my mum had my grandmas real fur stole and a few coats in storage. Im very against real fur normally but as it’s a vintage event and already an old coat would it be ok.

I don't wear leather by choice but I think there's a diffference between leather harvested as a byproduct and useful in day-to-day life and a small rodent farmed intensively purely because it has pretty fur .

And though I have never worn fur , I am sure there are warmer products .
Same goes for feather/down, I don;t use that .
I bought my DD a coat filled with recycled plastic , she says its lovely and warm.

clickbait videos from PETA do not constitute reliable evidence. I would like to see an independent report before believing such wild claims. Until that point I shall continue to presume them staged

Staged - do you mean false ? CGI?
If not then they have happened . So real ,

And as for being unable to skin a live animal , I've seen videoes and I don;t want to describe or even relive it in my brain.
But they don't get the chance to struggle Sad.

LeonardoDiwitchy · 01/04/2022 23:45

No, burn it.

FollowtheLizards · 01/04/2022 23:47

It's more of a crime/waste to let the fur coat go unworn and potentially to landfill, given an animal died over 70 years ago when attititudes were different to today's. When 'vegan leather' proves itself to last over 70 years perhaps YABU

user3837313202 · 01/04/2022 23:54

Some animals are killed solely for their skin, not for the purposes of eating, ie zebras, bison, water buffaloes, boars, deer, eels, seals, walrus, etc

I wrote a long post and managed to lose it.

In summary, we both know this is bollocks. And I say this as a vegetarian of nearly 20 years. I've eaten at least half the things on that list myself!

The first 6 species meats you've mentioned are readily available to buy in the UK, in some cases in supermarkets (eg venison is stocked in Waitrose). Boar and deer both live wild and have to be culled to stop them overrunning the eco system in the absence of natural predators such as wolves, and they are also actively farmed. Buffaloes are also used for ploughing and their milk for cheeses such as mozzarella, as well as meat.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/04/2022 00:00

This fur coat will most likely have been worn in its time . o the arguement that that animals died for nothing is incorrect .

I would agree with donating for animal bedding rather than binning .

OP - wear it /don;t wear it .
Your choice .

I wouldn;t say anything IRL to someone wearing fur , but my lip would curl.

TabithaTittlemouse · 02/04/2022 00:02

I couldn’t but I’m not you

ouch321 · 02/04/2022 00:34

Wear it

Whether it hangs in your wardrobe on a hanger or off your shoulders out somewhere on dd.mm.yy makes no difference whatsoever. The coat's already been made...

It's quite odd people don't get that...

Blossom64265 · 02/04/2022 00:50

If the garments already exists, letting them sit and rot or destroying them is wasteful. A coat doesn’t lose its practicality simply because standards have changed. Making additional fur items isn’t acceptable because of our arbitrary eating habits. The lesson should be to use resources wisely.

feministqueen · 02/04/2022 00:53

I would wear it too.

DdraigGoch · 02/04/2022 01:26

Staged - do you mean false ? CGI?
If not then they have happened . So real ,

Do you even know what the word "staged" means? Staged in the same way that Disney staged the mass suicide of lemmings for the "documentary" White Wilderness.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/04/2022 01:31

Do you even know what the word "staged" means? Staged in the same way that Disney staged the mass suicide of lemmings for the "documentary" White Wilderness

Obviously not Hmm

But you mention PETA saying its staged .
So are you saying it isn't real ?

Furries · 02/04/2022 03:33

Am guessing the OP doesn’t care what anyone thinks!

Onlywomengivebirth · 02/04/2022 04:07

They have a lifespan. I wore nana’s a couple of times, but got rid of it in recent years as it got a bit manky. Depends how it was stored I guess.

Dinoteeth · 02/04/2022 04:19

Wear it - the animals is already dead.

Give it time and the attitude to natural materials esp by products of the meat industry will change.
Man made materials are difficult to recycle, and will take centuries to break down in landfill not to mention the shedding of micro plastics and the damage it causes.

Natural materials will rot into the ground.

Grumpasaurusrex · 02/04/2022 04:26

I would

WanderingFruitWonderer · 02/04/2022 04:37

Well, I'm a vegan! So obviously, I personally wouldn't, and physically couldn't.
But, in a way, if you're not a vegan, and as you've not economically supported the fur industry, as it's old, it could be argued that it's worse to eat meat or drink milk, as there's considerable cruelty in those industries too. Obviously if it was new fur it would be obscene.
I think you need to listen to your own instinct and conscience, and see what it tells you.
The only other issue is that it could upset or offend the people around you. Which is another dimension to the ethics of your decision. I hope you reach a decision that you're comfortable with, and I hope have a great time.
RIP poor animals who perished to make the coat. So important to remember them Sad

RedRobin100 · 02/04/2022 06:27

@LapinR0se

I eat meat, or fish, or dairy or eggs I wear cashmere, or angora and/or leather

If you do ANY of these and object to wearing fur then you are a hypocrite

This

I wouldn’t buy new fur - but I think wearing vintage is fine if you want to

HarlanPepper · 02/04/2022 06:33

If you wear leather, I don't see the big deal about wearing fur (and I'm a vegetarian). Especially decades old fur.

Dentistlakes · 02/04/2022 06:48

I don’t know how you could bring yourself to wear it. We found 2 real fur coarse in the attic of a house we bought and I felt sick just picking it up. It was like touching a corpse. Absolutely revolting.

Personally I couldn’t stand next to someone wearing real fur.

ImOnTheRoadAgain · 02/04/2022 06:54

You shouldn't wear it.

If you do decide to, be prepared that you could get some very negative reactions from others!

daisydaisy11 · 02/04/2022 07:01

No please don't. Fur is a horrendous and brutal industry. Animal lovers have worked long and hard to draw attention to the cruelty behind it and to make it less acceptable. It does not need a revival in the fashion industry and by wearing fur you make a statement that it you accept the way it was made. I would judge you for it. If you do wear it, others might also give you negative looks or comments..why ruin your night by wearing something that has become, on the large, morally abhorrent?

sashh · 02/04/2022 07:16

@DialsMavis

I dont understand why people will wear leather but not fur. Especially new leather over vintage fur. I don't wear either but really dont see the distinction. Crack on and dont let it go to waste
Leather and sheepskin are byproducts of the meat industry.
NotMushroomInEre · 02/04/2022 07:52

I’ve a friend who is vegan and wears fur. She just doesn’t want to put dead things in her mouth.

Meat eaters have very disappointed conversations when they’re hoping to be goady towards her veganism, only to find out she doesn’t give a toss about animals- bless ‘em for trying though!

I wouldn’t personally wear fur- real or faux I think it looks dreadful but each to their own.

@Suzi888

If your friend doesn't give a toss about animals, you might want to let her know that she is in fact plant-based rather than vegan. There is one fundamental factor which constitutes being a vegan, and that is that we do what we can in order to reduce suffering and harm to animals. A vegan does not buy or consume (where practicable) any products derived from animals, nor do they use animals as a commodity.

People can eat plant-based for a number of reasons - health or environment, which is great, but if they lack the ethical motivation, they are not vegan. It's really that simple.

OP, I have a suede base sofa which I bought 10 years before becoming vegan. It is still in use as of today. Make of that what you will.

Choccorocco · 02/04/2022 08:05

I wear vintage but I would look with distaste as anyone wearing real fur these days. I refused to take the mink fur coats offered me a few years ago. Same to a fox fur shoulder drape that made me shudder! If you’re asking in here then I think you already know that much as you would like to wear it, it’s not the right thing to do if you are usually anti-fur.
