To think my friend's son is a prat?

He's 27 and unvaccinated. He's never had covid.

He thinks he can travel to Tenerife this weekend when the rules clearly stipulate that unvaccinated people need to show they've had covid in the last 6 months - he can't prove that.

His mum and I think he should rearrange the trip.

What will happen at the airport? Will he get refused entry to the gate? Or will he get to Tenerife and then get turned back?

I haven't flown abroad since the pandemic so not sure when they check the vaccination / medical status.

He is a real prat - he always thinks he knows better than anyone else and rules don't apply to him. I am half hoping that he does get his comeuppance with this

If he’s travelling from the UK he’ll be refused entry.

Pipsquiggle · 23/03/2022 17:51

@KellyJonesLeatherTrousers

So they will let him on the flight (yes flying from UK) but he won't get through customs in Tenerife?

Leave him to it and watch him come back in a taxi when he gets turned away at the airport.

ThinWomansBrain · 23/03/2022 17:54

Also an adult - don't give it headspace, let him make his own decisions and incur the consequences.

Minniem2020 · 23/03/2022 18:06

Yep, he'll be denied boarding

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/03/2022 18:10

Everything was checked multiple times for me. Wouldn't have got near a plane!

Nahnanananahna · 23/03/2022 18:10

He's very likely to be denied at check-in. If he gets through there, at boarding. The airlines get fined if they let him fly and he gets turned back at destination, so they do check. Not impossible he'd slip through, but unlikely.

freedomhereicome · 23/03/2022 18:13

Not Tenerife but I wasn't allowed to check in till I had inputted all my vaccination proof etc. so I imagine it's a similar process.

But when you said son i immediately thought teenage at best. He's an adult. Time for him to learn some life lessons.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 23/03/2022 18:15

Make sure you and your friend are having a booze fuelled evening so she can't go pick him from the airport when he gets sent back!

AlpineSue · 23/03/2022 18:18

Yes he will be denied boarding. Its checked at check in.

Duracellbunnywannabe · 23/03/2022 18:18

Last time I flew, our vaccination status was the first thing which was checked before we even checked in. I’m sure it was checked again prior to boarding and checked again in Spain. He isn’t going on holiday.

MadameHeisenberg · 23/03/2022 18:20

I just flew back to Geneva from the UK and a whole family were denied boarding as they were unvaccinated. So he won’t be getting on the plane.

Porcupineintherough · 23/03/2022 18:20

Some people learn best through experience, so I should just leave him to it.

Footballsundays6777 · 23/03/2022 18:23

Flew to the canaries last week, ours actually wasn’t checked until we arrived in lanzo. Once you went through passport control and prior to luggage there is an area you have to pass through and the Spanish passenger locator form with the QR code is scanned. Kids don’t need it, there temps are checked. Potentially it could be really costly for him as he will be there already and will need to pay for a return flight back there and then.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 23/03/2022 18:23

He’s 27 years old. He’s been told. Don’t bother trying to persuade him. Let him feel the consequences of refusing to listen. He’s much more likely to listen to reason in the future if he actually has to experience being wrong. It’s not your job, or his mum’s job, to try to win him round. He’s an adult. Albeit a stupid one.

Jammybadger · 23/03/2022 18:33

Is he actually that stupid or likely to be lying that he isn’t vaccinated just to wind people up ?

the80sweregreat · 23/03/2022 18:35

I thought you needed a pcr test if your unvaccinated and traveling abroad ?
We are going abroad , we are vaccinated and need to complete a locator form 48 hours before and have proof of vaccines on our phones or the paper versions ( we will have both )
I'm sure that if he gets the pcr's done in the right time frame and the locator forms etc it might be ok ? He will be going on holiday to an airport and sent home again !

NewPapaGuinea · 23/03/2022 18:39

Let him crack on and ask how his holiday was when you next see him.

Broads93 · 23/03/2022 18:39

Can you clarify, do you think he's a pratt because he actually acts like one or because he's unvaccinated? If it's because he's unvaccinated - it's you that's the prat, if you've got your vaccination then why are you scared ???

Clymene · 23/03/2022 18:39

When I flew last year, they just didn't let people board the plane. It depends on who he's flying with but he'll probably get turned back before he leaves the U.K.

What an idiot.

2me2u2u2me · 23/03/2022 18:39

I’ve just returned from abroad, they checked everything, going out, arriving, leaving, arriving, I doubt very much he’ll get past first base.

Will you come back and update us, I’m intrigued.

If he gets through I’m with pp that he’s maybe winding everyone up.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 23/03/2022 18:42

What a massive stretch 🤣 Where did the OP say she was scared?

"Can you clarify so I can push my anti vax agenda on you" is what you really meant isn't it

Just get him to have a pcr test !
I'm sure that the unvaccinated will be able to fly , but it's just a bit more faff and money to get the tests done a few days before you go ( or whatever the airline asks for ) lots of pharmacies do the tests I believe , or you send off for it ?
They can't have millions of people not flying anywhere surely ?

WeddingHangover · 23/03/2022 18:50

Probably nothing will happen. My sister and BIL travelled from America here and then too another European country for a weekend. Both unvaccinated and nothing happened.
