Aibu to think this isn’t okay - cleaner nespresso

624 replies

Candyhats · 21/03/2022 04:56

We have a cleaner who comes in on a daily basis and obviously we have tea and instant coffee, which we keep in our home and provide for her to drink. However I noticed we are going through nespresso capsules quickly and then I realized she has nespresso(s) daily when she works. My husband does drink coffee and I’m the only one that drinks it and as a treat, even it home.

Aibu to address this with cleaner?

I tried to hide a sleeve with some capsules in, she found it and had a couple while emptying the rest into the nespresso jar.

OP posts:
@Belladonna12 - but we have no idea of OP's situation re the cleaner/home help/carer etc and to be honest it's not really our business to pry into the finer details.

I'd be in the same camp actually - if I were OP - I'd find it cheeky and would have a word with her.
That's my point. We have no idea what the disability and yet people are assuming that the DH can't work and that OP is a carer OP hasn't said that.

Snoozysnoozy · 22/03/2022 19:25

I gave the Sky man who fixed my aerial a Nespresso coffee the other day, don't know him from Adam. Why would you begrudge it for someone who is in your house everyday?

Because that only cost you one pod once, rather than 5 pods/week

placematstation · 22/03/2022 19:48

@TigerLilyTail

I understand, we had a similar issue with our cleaner. I always buy toilet paper from Harrods as it's the only one that doesn't give poor Tarquin a sore arse.

I bought the cleaner some special toilet paper from Aldi, which I assumed she would be familiar with and comfortable using. But, she kept using the nice toilet paper, even though I said that it wasn't for the likes of her.

One day she walked out mid-shift and called me a cunt!! Shock

The cheek of the whole thing still astounds me.

🤣
Duchess379 · 22/03/2022 20:05

I have a cleaner & I offer her my Tassimo coffee but she doesn't want it. C'mon, they work out at about 50p a serving. Hardly £5 from Starbucks is it?!

PersephonePomegranate · 22/03/2022 20:20

Shouldn't the peasant know such things are not for them?

No, I wouldn't begrudge them decent coffee.

contrelamontre · 22/03/2022 20:53

@TigerLilyTail It still doesn't really make sense. Does the cleaner ever get a day off? Is she working 10-day weeks? Are the pods a pound each?...Like, why are Mumnetters just so bad at maths?

50p a capsule, 2 x capsules a day, 5 days a week. Maybe it's your reading comprehension skills that are the problem?

I've reread the OP's 4 posts. Nowhere does she state that it's 2 capsules a day

contrelamontre · 22/03/2022 21:50

The OP says the cleaner opened a new (ineffectively hidden) sleeve, had a couple and emptied the rest into the jar. The original OP is complaining about daily nespresso(s). A couple = 2. Nespresso(s) more than 1.

dicedmint · 22/03/2022 21:58

I understand you OP.

I specifically told my cleaner she can not in any circumstance use my en-suite toilet, or the family bathroom.

Can you imagine she can't even hold her pee in for 6 hours? What do the unwashed do? Just drink pints of tap water or something?

When I found out she had used the bathroom (cctv) I confronted her. Couldn't even look in my eyes.

She never came back.

LBFseBrom · 22/03/2022 22:22

I had a cleaner who smoked a fag in my back garden, neighbour spies told me. It wasn't one of mine though so I let her off with a warning.

TigerLilyTail · 22/03/2022 23:17

You're quite right. Obviously, as the cleaner only comes daily, she would need more than one coffee break per day. Whether or not the OP actually lives in Downton Abbey is wholly irrelevant. I have no idea why there have been so many troll-hunting posts. This is a perfectly commonplace dilemma. Just because many of you only have a cleaner for 3 hours once a week and don't begrudge them a posh coffee means nothing.

Anyway, the problem has been resolved. The cleaner has been informed. There is nothing to see here, people.

HoppingPavlova · 23/03/2022 01:50

I had a tray ready with our daily teas/coffee and biscuits and said these are what we all use daily and can she please help herself from this.

To be clear, you divvy out your tea, coffee and biscuits daily on a tray? You don’t just go to the packet of biscuits and take one whenever you want but your household has allocated portions on a tray each day?

What happens if you feel like a Nespresso one day but it’s not on the tray? Do you have to wait for it’s allocated day on the tray? Just seems like a really weird system for a household with adults. If DH pulled that I think I’d split my sides.

Superhanz · 23/03/2022 03:24

@NotMyselfWithoutCoffee

I think your cleaner IBU for rummaging through your stuff when you are hiding it. End of the day it's your personal coffee.. Cleaner can bring her own in. When I go into the office I have to take my own tea/coffee.. Why is being a cleaner any different.
Give over!

Bring your own bloody tea and coffee with you as a cleaner. Fucking hell, I've heard it all.

There are some right misers on this thread, thankfully in the minority though.

YABU. Just because your husband has a disability doesn't excuse the fact that you are being mean. I would be absolutely affronted having that conversation with the cleaner.

TheGrinchsDog · 23/03/2022 05:47

@extractorfactor

Just out of interest those of you who say they would give their cleaner 'posh' coffee, would you also give your cleaner and builders cans of drink like coke? Or freshly squeezed juice? Or mineral water? If you had a soda stream would you be okay with them using it to make a nice refreshing drink? Again I don't have a cleaner, but whilst I'd always offer tea or coffee I don't think I'd offer other drinks, but now I think about it I'm not sure why?
Yes genuinely I would lol! If I've got it in the house it's on offer, nice foods and drinks very much included. It's just how it's done here and it's nice to show appreciation/ just be nice because you can.

OP YABVU to begrudge your DAILY cleaner the not expensive nespresso coffee, even with your not actually relevant updates. Since you haven't said if you are bouncing of the breadline or not, I assume not frankly.
As others have pointed out you can buy the on brand pods, cheap online.

If you are hard up you wouldn't be totally off in asking her to limit herself to xpods per week I wouldn't say, but to begrudge her any at all does smack of snobbery.

Holothane · 23/03/2022 06:04

We buy ours kebab meat and chips the other day he treated us to a huge pizza between us and me a very small mushroom and pepperoni one because I thought I was paying and was happy with that he treated us to to that.

I think she just put them on a tray so the cleaner could see all of their 'daily use' options and what she was welcome to, not that they're normally set out on a tray
doobyscoob · 23/03/2022 06:49

Im guessing you live somewhere large and palatial that needs a lot of upkeep

I'm guessing you haven't read the thread.
Valeriekat · 23/03/2022 07:31

I have never heard of a cleaner needing a coffee break!
How big is your house?

cantbecoping · 23/03/2022 07:35

I am absolutely mortified for you. Mortified.

Snoozysnoozy · 23/03/2022 07:46

Wonder how many people in this thread are the #bekind types. You know the type I mean, always overtly proving that they're wonderful human beings. At the first opportunity though they stick the boot in. Can't wait for threads like this too call the OP a snob, tight, to hope the cleaner leaves her in the lurch.

Not to mention the massive amounts of reverse snobbery on the thread. Lots of "if you can afford a cleaner and good coffee you must be loaded". So what? I can afford a lot of things, doesn't mean that I'm going to give it all away for free.

Loads of missing the point too. OP is buying 10 coffees and only getting 2-3 while the cleaner is helping themselves to the remainder. "It's only 35-50 pence" so fucking what? Can I just take 50p out of your purse daily? Help myself to an extra £5 every two weeks? I doubt it.

If I made myself a 'fancy' coffee then that's what I'd be offering others. Similarly if I was making an instant that would be offered. I wouldn't expect to have guests or workers eyeing other options

oblada · 23/03/2022 07:54

@Candyhats

It’s about £5 a week. = £22 a month = working out to about an extra £260 a year. On top of a livable wage I already pay her, with bonuses, with annual paid leave and a return flight home to her home country.

I don’t keep nespresso in my home excessively. I enjoy it possibly once a week. But if I buy a sleeve or a few and don’t get to enjoy any coffee because whatever I buy is finished before I get to it. I’m allowed to be annoyed.

I am confused as to the need you feel to pay her bonuses, annual leave and flights home when she is presumably self employed and yet have a massive issue with having to buy more coffee. You are obviously allowed to be annoyed, you don't need anyone's permission to be annoyed, but that's not what you asked on here.

Elleinad0 · 23/03/2022 08:54
@Elleinad0 the cleaner was having one a day so costing a fiver a week. The OP has one a week so a fiver every month or so. HTH.
My bad I didn't read properly. Thank you!

EthelTheAardvark · 23/03/2022 09:06

@BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou

How does it cost a fiver a week given that capsules are at most around 35p each?

They’re over 50p each if you have the vertuo style @EthelTheAardvark.

You can’t get the cheap (and not so nice TBH) knock offs for the vertuo machines. Anybody in my home is welcome to a coffee from my machine but they can have instant IF they’d prefer…..

But that still only comes to £2.50 a week.
