Aibu to think this isn’t okay - cleaner nespresso

624 replies

Candyhats · 21/03/2022 04:56

We have a cleaner who comes in on a daily basis and obviously we have tea and instant coffee, which we keep in our home and provide for her to drink. However I noticed we are going through nespresso capsules quickly and then I realized she has nespresso(s) daily when she works. My husband does drink coffee and I’m the only one that drinks it and as a treat, even it home.

Aibu to address this with cleaner?

I tried to hide a sleeve with some capsules in, she found it and had a couple while emptying the rest into the nespresso jar.

Finding an honest and reliable cleaning person is almost impossible in the States. I have a millennial step nephew who gives me two hours a week. If he wanted a box of Goldfish each time he came, I would make sure I kept them in stock.

Ericaequites · 21/03/2022 22:30

I don’t count spoons, but had someone from an agency who kicked the cat. That’s unacceptable.

Hollywolly1 · 21/03/2022 22:33

@Ericaequites
A box of goldfish 🐠 like wtf are they frozen or what

tillytoodles1 · 21/03/2022 22:48

Tell her she should know her place and only drink the cheap coffee.

YellowLemonYellow · 21/03/2022 23:17

Tell her to get her instant coffee and crack on cleaning. Stop pissing about with the coffee machine/pods.

Does she also leave smelling of your favourite perfume and her lips looking like that vibrant pink lipstick you bought last week.

I think she is a CF.

Just drink that till you are offered other. It is just polite. As a self employed bookkeeper I would have helped myself to the the cheaper option.
YellowLemonYellow · 21/03/2022 23:44

I'm confused why people think they can work for someone and look for their expensive drinks. Just drink what you are offered.

Ericaequites · 22/03/2022 03:39

@Hollywolly1-
Goldfish are a Pepperidge Farm savory fish shaped cracker sold in a foil lined bag of about 200 grams for the equivalent of £2. Usually, they are cheddar cheese flavored, and bright orange. They are favorite portable lower sugar children’s snacks, or bar nibble. I didn’t realize they were not a British thing.

I bet I'll see these everywhere now 😆

@Mumdiva99

Just don't have any capsules for a week. (Our capsules are only for occasional use too as a treat so I get it.)
When I read things like this, I understand why the people of Mumsnet are so uptight. Treat? Hmm what an exciting life some lead
Ikeptgoing · 22/03/2022 08:15

I'm in the camp of saying something. As your cleaner is daily due to DHs disability, she's CF helping herself to your expensive coffee pods daily- why would she think that's ok?! You're not a cafe and didn't offer those. They are expensive and it must be upsetting that she's going through 7-14 pods a week!!

I'd say "hi- here's the coffee and tea to help yourself to, not my nespresso pods please as those are my treat which I don't have very often"

Then on occasion I'd make her one if I want to make myself one with a "am having fancy coffee today would you like one?"

I don't see that as being any different to my having my adult son's fancy coffee machine sat in my kitchen - which I don't "help myself" twice a day when I'm cooking for eg- he offers sometimes and I love it.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 22/03/2022 08:22

I suspect the cleaning service is home help as the OP's DH is disabled.
I don't think you're unreasonable if she went for the luxury treat biscuits or chocolate daily I'd feel the same.
It's a bit cheeky regardless of her profession.

I'm in the camp of being honest
I would not have a problem with my cleaner having the nice coffee. However you are entirely within you rights to ask her not to.

Just tell her you are cutting back and only keeping the pods for special occasions so she's welcome to the other coffee

Job done

All the feedback was helpful and I gently raised it with our cleaner this morning. I had a tray ready with our daily teas/coffee and biscuits and said these are what we all use daily and can she please help herself from this. Plainly stating that we don’t use or have nespresso daily.

She said she understood and that was that.

But why did you bother for the sake of a couple of pounds a week?

Don't be surprised if she starts looking for new employment.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 22/03/2022 10:06

Look after the pennies and the pounds mind themselves.
A couple of pound a week is close to £150 a year.
Savings matter when your OH is disabled and unable to work.
OP hasn't said of this cleaner is home help allocated or privately paid.

I'm glad you have sorted it out OP.

Candyhats · 22/03/2022 10:09

It’s about £5 a week. = £22 a month = working out to about an extra £260 a year. On top of a livable wage I already pay her, with bonuses, with annual paid leave and a return flight home to her home country.

I don’t keep nespresso in my home excessively. I enjoy it possibly once a week. But if I buy a sleeve or a few and don’t get to enjoy any coffee because whatever I buy is finished before I get to it. I’m allowed to be annoyed.

I wonder if the thread would have gone wildly differently if you’d put all this quite relevant information in your OP!

Did she say he was unable to work? Plenty of people with disabilities do. They obviously have plenty of money if they can afford a daily cleaner.
Gonnagetgoing · 22/03/2022 10:27

@stuntbubbles - but most here would be still saying - oh but it's only a few Nespressos a day, you can't begrudge your cleaner that treat can you?!

Glad you sorted it out OP.

I know this sounds ridiculously generous but if your cleaner doesn't have a Nespresso machine you could always look into buying her one, e.g. maybe instead of a bonus at Christmas or a part birthday/Christmas present.

Gonnagetgoing · 22/03/2022 10:29

@Belladonna12 - but we have no idea of OP's situation re the cleaner/home help/carer etc and to be honest it's not really our business to pry into the finer details.

I'd be in the same camp actually - if I were OP - I'd find it cheeky and would have a word with her.

LunaAndHerMoonDragons · 22/03/2022 10:40

@Tothemoonandbackx

Why don't you just take it out of her wages?? When you hand over her invoice for the week/ month, whatever, show deductions for each capsule she's had.......😏😂 (totally joking btw)
What about depreciation on the nespresso machine? Surely she should be covering her share of that. As everyone knows, cleaner's rough handed behaviour really impacts the usable life of the machine.
