Vegan as the default. Specifically slightly annoyed with the McPlant

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian.

I want a McPlant with proper (if American cheese slices can be called proper) cheese.

I would like to order a Big Mac, and sub out the burgers for the plant burgers!

Surely there are more people like me?

Vegan options being the default for vegans and vegetarians is very annoying. AIBU?

(No this isn't all I have to worry about in life before someone says it.)

Can't you do that?

streamee · 14/03/2022 16:49

@Clymene

Can't you do that?
Nope.

If you can, please share the magic skills?

YABU in that particular example. The Mcplant is indiscernible from real cheese. I’m a vegetarian. Ask to swap a Big Mac with the mcplant patties if you want this?

FairyCakeWings · 14/03/2022 16:50

Yanbu.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 14/03/2022 16:51

I love the McPlant burger with all the vegan options. I’m a vegetarian but would prefer to be vegan.

MissDollyMix · 14/03/2022 16:52

YANBU. So many of my veggie friends are getting annoying with phasing out of vegetarian food in favour of vegan.

BurntO · 14/03/2022 16:52

YANBU. The cheese is crap IMO and doesn’t compare to the normal cheese. You should have the option to swap

Madeintowerhamlets · 14/03/2022 16:52

I totally agree OP. It’s just laziness in my opinion. It’s easier for restaurants to cater to vegans as a catch all rather than to cater for vegetarians as well.

Akite · 14/03/2022 16:53

Yanbu, my dh is veggie and a cheese lover and all the veggie food in restaurants seems to disappearing to be replaced with vegan options

BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 14/03/2022 16:54

I have the opposite issue: as a flexetarian who hates cheese I think the great advantage of the rise of veganism is the increase in vegetarian dishes without sodding cheese on them. Vegan as the default is my dream and I'll happily forgo butter if it means I never have to look at another goats cheese tartlet.

But now they've invented "vegan cheese" they insist on ruining perfectly nice vegan dishes with it.

At least McDonalds let you remove it.

RufusthefIorallovingreindeer · 14/03/2022 16:56

Yanbu at all

I'm more of a pescitarian at the moment but I do eat a lot of vegetarian food and my vegetarian food choices seem to be going down not up

GlitteryGreen · 14/03/2022 16:56

Yeah I agree with you OP.

I didn't notice it when I tried the McPlant, but in loads of other places it's all about vegan cheese and I just really don't like it. It's so strong and reminds me of the cheese you get sprayed on nachos in the cinema.

pictish · 14/03/2022 16:57

Yanbu. I have noticed this too. Vegetarian options now all appear to be vegan. Bit shit for the veggies who still eat dairy.

EleanorShell · 14/03/2022 16:58

I agree!

Clymene · 14/03/2022 16:58

I thought the whole thing of McDonald's was that you could adapt the burger the way you want it. So they won't let you swap the vegan faux cheese for 'real' cheese? That's a bit shit

BertieQueen · 14/03/2022 16:59

Can you not customise at the machine?

Coronado2 · 14/03/2022 17:00

Surely if you go to the counter you can order it with regular cheese?

I'm pleased it comes this way because I'm so fed up of seeing vegetarian options that can so easily be tweaked to be vegan.

kittykarate · 14/03/2022 17:01

I wonder if they keep the preparation areas physically separate to prevent 'cross contamination' and that's why you can't customize american cheese onto the McPlant.

PoorMegHopkins · 14/03/2022 17:01

I agree. Vegan cheese is not good either.
Although I’m glad that so much effort is being made for vegans too.

Dahlietta · 14/03/2022 17:02

I thought the whole thing of McDonald's was that you could adapt the burger the way you want it.

Wasn't that Burger King? (Possible you have to be of a certain age to remember this Grin)

AuntyBumBum · 14/03/2022 17:03

Just come over to the dark side. The bacon is lovely Grin

dudsville · 14/03/2022 17:03

I shouldn't comment as I eat chicken and fish a few times a month and eggs and dairy daily, but I prefer vegan meals when out and would be very happy if all food defaulted to vegan!

Gizlotsmum · 14/03/2022 17:03

They should be able to tweak it if you ask. As annoying as it is I can see why a restaurant would have a vegan and meat menus rather than a vegan, veggie and meat menus,

HangingOver · 14/03/2022 17:04

I bloody love the McPlant Grin

cushioncovers · 14/03/2022 17:04

I love the McPlant so on that basis yabu
