Vegan as the default. Specifically slightly annoyed with the McPlant

streamee · 14/03/2022 16:47

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian.

I want a McPlant with proper (if American cheese slices can be called proper) cheese.

I would like to order a Big Mac, and sub out the burgers for the plant burgers!

Surely there are more people like me?

Vegan options being the default for vegans and vegetarians is very annoying. AIBU?

(No this isn't all I have to worry about in life before someone says it.)

It's the same everywhere. Very little vegetarian food, lots of vegan frankenfood. It's annoying and yanbu.

MrsMigginsCat · 14/03/2022 17:05

@BertieQueen

Can you not customise at the machine?
Coming on to say the same. Swap out the vegan cheese for the normal stuff. I'm an extra gherkin girl myself!

🤢🤢🤢

The thought of putting any meat, including bacon, in my mouth makes me feel sick. I’ve been a vegetarian for 18 years now and will never go back.

VivX · 14/03/2022 17:09

YANBU. I hate vegan cheese - I'd rather do without. Now, it seems, that vegetarians must become vegan by default in restaurants.

Hwory · 14/03/2022 17:09

I would imagine you could get mcplant with real cheese but you couldn't get a big Mac with plant burgers as the plant Pattie are thicker and more expensive than the thin & measly big Mac patties.

musketeersmama · 14/03/2022 17:09

Go to Burger King - you can add or swop items although it costs you more but perfect for vegetarians

parabalabalabala · 14/03/2022 17:11

Vegan cheese is horrible and puts me off getting non-meat food when I'm out. It does seem that vegan options are pushing out veggie ones, which is very frustrating.

Hwory · 14/03/2022 17:11

You would probably have to do the cheese thing at the register with a person though as I doubt they'd have it as an option automatically on the self service.

Bacon is revolting. Even in my meat eating days I couldn't eat it.

edenhills · 14/03/2022 17:14

Why are you vegetarian? Obviously it's not about animal welfare or you would be vegan. If it's about health then why are you eating in McDonalds?

KittenKong · 14/03/2022 17:16

I find a lot of vegan foods make me feel queasy- there must be something they use (as a binder?) so that hacks me off for starters.

Considering most people I know who ‘do vegan’ are flipping food tourists who still mostly happily eat meat/fish, it hacks me off that I’m finding less choice when eating out because there will be one ‘not meat’ option which will be vegan.

And why make vegan ‘ready made’ burgers, meat alternatives etc look like road kill? I’m not squeamish but some look like a bloodied slab of carcas.

and another thing - vegans and veggies of old wouldn’t set foot in a fast food place like McDs because of animal welfare, food quality and green credentials.

Where’s my cheese?

cherrysthename · 14/03/2022 17:16

It's suitable for vegans so obviously the cheese is vegan. I order without the 'cheese' as I don't like cheese. You can order yours with real cheese. It's mcDonalds. You can order what you want within reason.

What’s it to you?

I thought I was the only one bothered by this! I know how I sound when I say this, but I was recently disappointed to learn that the hotel where I was staying served breakfast sausages which were vegan and not bog standard vegetarian. They don't taste the same Sad

MargotMoo · 14/03/2022 17:18

Not sure why anyone above the age of 12 finds the “yum yum bacon” jokes funny when talking to people who have made the ethical choice to avoid the cruelties of the farming industry. Pathetic, unintelligent and unoriginal

spuddy56 · 14/03/2022 17:18

Absolutely agree with this!!! So fed up of non cheesy vegetarian options when eating out!

Allaboutthatvase · 14/03/2022 17:18

They've let me swap it for regular cheese

My partner who is lactose intolerant is overjoyed by being able to order vegan cheese on a regular burger and in general restaurants have a dairy free meal. Previously it wasn't uncommon to find restaurants had zero dairy free meals (due to people's love of cream sauces and pastry), and a completely normal to have zero dairy free deserts.

Tell my bro. Same bloody joke every time I see him - and I’ve been veggie since 1984.
TulipsGarden · 14/03/2022 17:21

I agree.. it's so annoying. I'm pescatarian but mainly eat veggie, and LOVE cheese. Vegan cheese is often quite unpleasant and ruins what would be a perfectly nice veggie dish.

It's just lazy restaurants still only doing one or two non-meat options, but now they're default vegan. If vegan cheese were nice I wouldn't mind, but it's not!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 14/03/2022 17:21

@Madeintowerhamlets

I totally agree OP. It’s just laziness in my opinion. It’s easier for restaurants to cater to vegans as a catch all rather than to cater for vegetarians as well.
It's easy to dismiss it as lazy, you have to factor in cost and practicality though. It's impossible to cater for every option in business.
TheSpanishApartment · 14/03/2022 17:21

YANBU. This is really pissing me off. All restaurants are at it. I don't want meat but I do want dairy. It tastes so much better. It's lazy - they only have to offer one option then.

79andnotout · 14/03/2022 17:21

YANBU. I'm vegetarian and love cheese and veganism is ruining my junk food.

Bobnotpop · 14/03/2022 17:23

I completely agree, a lot of vegan food is made to taste close to meat too. I don’t want to eat meat or anything that tastes like it! I want veggie food with cheese.

I used to love the haloumi burger at the Everyman cinema, now it’s a sodding plant burger.

Have you only just joined mumsnet? There’s a thread on this about once a fortnight 😂
