Vegan as the default. Specifically slightly annoyed with the McPlant

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian.

I want a McPlant with proper (if American cheese slices can be called proper) cheese.

I would like to order a Big Mac, and sub out the burgers for the plant burgers!

Surely there are more people like me?

Vegan options being the default for vegans and vegetarians is very annoying. AIBU?

(No this isn't all I have to worry about in life before someone says it.)

It’s not even proper vegans. It’s the one meal a week-ers. No one ever took vegan seriously before the whole veganary thing took off (they were mocked worse than veggies before than).

I wonder how many full time vegans there are these days?

implantreplace · 14/03/2022 17:25

* I want *

Doesn’t get

As I say to my children

wishing3 · 14/03/2022 17:25

YANBU-bugs me too!

FoxyFoxyLoxy · 14/03/2022 17:26

I get where the restaurants are coming from. Instead of offering a regular option, a veggie option and a vegan option, they offer just two and the veggies are expected to lump it.

Unfortunately the vegetarians are not nearly so militant and trendy as the vegans.

implantreplace · 14/03/2022 17:26

Baffling to me that vegetarian or vegans would darken Mac Donald’s if not just a personal taste thing

Peasock · 14/03/2022 17:26

Sadly it's cheaper for businesses so they will probably carry on doing it. By defaulting to vegan they can say they cater for veggies and vegans, even though the reality is that it means the number of veggie options are dropping, boooo.

lookforthesun · 14/03/2022 17:27

I agree.

I’m a vegetarian and hate when places don’t do a veggie option but do a vegan and that’s meant to do.

I mean of course I can eat the vegan but so can a meat eater. I don’t want to eat vegan - I like real cheese, eggs, milk etc etc I find vegan food not to my taste. In the same way a meat eater might find vegan food “lacking” in what they’d like.

KittenKong · 14/03/2022 17:28

It was getting better for veggies - when I first went veggie you were lucky if there was one thing on the menu (and you didn’t have to ask for the ‘chef to make something’). It was going so far as your actually have choice (shock!) or 2 or 3 items.

Now it’s one vegan dish that covers vegan, veggie, halal and kosher(ish).

Because I love a McFlurry! And their mozzarella sticks.

But is your reason for vegetarianism and ethical obe?

Ducksurprise · 14/03/2022 17:29

Vegetarian sausages are now almost exclusively vegan in restaurants and they are vile.

I agree op, lifelong Vegetarian.

Flame76 · 14/03/2022 17:29

Completely agree about vegetarian food being replaced by vegan food. You hate vegan cheese, but I have it even worse as I hate fake meat. Yet bean burgers everywhere seem to have been replaced by fake meat burgers. Someone upthread mentioned Burger King, but I find them awful! They had a lovely bean burger but have now replaced it with TWO fake meat burgers!

NiLunNiLautre · 14/03/2022 17:29

Am I the only one who actually LIKES vegan cheese? 😁

DomusAurea · 14/03/2022 17:30

@edenhills

Why are you vegetarian? Obviously it's not about animal welfare or you would be vegan. If it's about health then why are you eating in McDonalds?
ooh I am giving out my first Biscuit - vegetarian, but with real butter. Vegan option available too.
WoozieFloozie · 14/03/2022 17:31

I feel the same.
I ordered it without the sauce and cheese and adding my own proper cheese slice and heinz burger sauce Grin

There’s definitely something they use on vegan sausages (and quorn) that has a particular taste (not nice) and it does make me feel sicky. So glad when quorn brought back their veggie bangers - and their vegan slices are revolting.
CremeEggThief · 14/03/2022 17:31

YANBU.

RusticCharminglyCrumbled · 14/03/2022 17:33

As a "proper" vegan who only ever eats plants Hmm I agree with you. I'll put to one side my feelings about why people would be veggie for the animals and still consume dairy, because it's your choice. If I was vegetarian I would be very unhappy about the enforced veganism. Hopefully in the future you can customise the burgers more and meat eaters who can't have lactose can have the dairy free cheese too. Even more hopefully they'll make a gf ve bun and I can have a burger with you

Kanaloa · 14/03/2022 17:33

Usually you can at most places. Like at Burger King you can just ask for the impossible whopper but with normal cheese. And they swap it for you.

Username917778 · 14/03/2022 17:34

YANBU! The mcplant however is fine, that cheese tastes nice. If they can make all vegan cheese taste better I'll have no qualms. I was a vegan for 6 years and the cheese was revolting.

BooksAndHooks · 14/03/2022 17:34

Nope I’m just pleased there are now more choices for vegetarians. I can cope with vege cheese and dressings to get a decent vege option.

Dguu6u · 14/03/2022 17:34

Is the regular cheese vegetarian though?

This is just a pretty stupid ‘gotcha’ that people use. So by those standards vegetarians can’t shop at Asda since it has a butcher counter. Can’t go to any restaurant that sells meat or fish etc.

You make the best choices for yourself.

spanktastic · 14/03/2022 17:35

I'm lactose intolerant and most places have stopped doing a lactose free option, it's vegan or go without.
