Vegan as the default. Specifically slightly annoyed with the McPlant

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian.

I want a McPlant with proper (if American cheese slices can be called proper) cheese.

I would like to order a Big Mac, and sub out the burgers for the plant burgers!

Surely there are more people like me?

Vegan options being the default for vegans and vegetarians is very annoying. AIBU?

(No this isn't all I have to worry about in life before someone says it.)

Try being coeliac.

I’m not a vegan but if I want to buy ready made meals etc then I forced to be half the time.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 14/03/2022 17:47

YANBU based on my opposite experience. I am not vegan nor vegetarian and yet I can no longer have my lovely Starbucks porridge because they’ve changed it in favour of a vegan option made with coconut….and I don’t like it.

Why oh why can’t they offer both so everyone is happy?

mewkins · 14/03/2022 17:48

Agree with this. Veggie for decades but everywhere is going vegan. When this is a vegetarian pasty it is particularly depressing as pastry should be made with real butter!!!

APurpleSquirrel · 14/03/2022 17:48

@ineedsun

Isn’t vegan cheese lactose free?

Yes, but you can get lactose free milk/cheese/cream/butter which is still made from cows milk & tastes the same. Many people who are lactose intolerant still eat eggs & other animal products & want to be able to eat real dairy that's lactose free. Plus vegan cheese isn't great.
My SIL is lactose free & whilst she appreciates the increased options brought about by the increased prevalence of veganism many times she just wants food that doesn't have dairy in it or has lactose free dairy rather than vegan.

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 14/03/2022 17:49

@Dahlietta

I thought the whole thing of McDonald's was that you could adapt the burger the way you want it.

Wasn't that Burger King? (Possible you have to be of a certain age to remember this Grin)

Yes. I remember the feem tooon.

'You want it you way, at BK, you got it'

Twiceover · 14/03/2022 17:49

I'm vegetarian and finding my eating out options much poorer now the default is often one vegan option. I look back with nostalgia on the goat's cheese tart. I like cauliflower but it's hardly a treat when eating out, however fancily done. DH and one DD also now vegan so we mostly eat vegan meals at home too. Give me back my cheese!

Kanaloa · 14/03/2022 17:49

@implantreplace

I’m not talking about shopping

I’m talking about getting fast food

Surely not the same?

And Macdonalds isn’t any old place

It is somewhere with a horrific reputation for historical treatment of animals used in its food.

Hence my curiosity

Do you think supermarket meat is somehow ethical? Or is the local chippy somehow better than/more moral.

It’s been explained. You make the best choices for yourself. It’s unrealistic to say you’ll never eat anywhere that sells meat because almost everywhere does.

Shrekles20 · 14/03/2022 17:49

YANBU in general. I’ve been vegetarian for many years and am soooo fed up with everything becoming vegan, it just feels like laziness on behalf of companies doing this. I remember I picked up some horrible vegan cheese bap from a shop and it made me feel I’ll!

However I LOVE the MacPlant which is bad because generally I don’t like the food at MacDonalds…I really disliked the old veggie burger and it annoyed me that they didn’t have anything better.

Finally I feel like I’m able to eat something that actually resembles a McDonald’s beef burger and it’s delicious! I’m not bothered by the cheese because the regular cheese there is just plastic rubbish anyway so it makes no odds! It’s very tasty though!

Joystir59 · 14/03/2022 17:50

@edenhills

Why are you vegetarian? Obviously it's not about animal welfare or you would be vegan. If it's about health then why are you eating in McDonalds?
Judgetarian you!
Kanaloa · 14/03/2022 17:50

So yeah it pretty much is the same. If you restrict yourself to never eating at any business that sells ‘unethical’ meat (most vegetarians for ethical reasons won’t agree that there is any such thing as ethical meat) then you’d never be able to eat.

Kanaloa · 14/03/2022 17:50

*there isn’t, sorry.

implantreplace · 14/03/2022 17:51

@Kanaloa

Why are you talking about grocery shopping?

In any event - you can select the meat you want to purchase ie organic, free range or even from local farm

As far as I know, macdonalds doesn’t offer you the options of anything other than the meat it provides

EeeICouldRipATissue · 14/03/2022 17:52

If there were different cheese and sauce options, it would be even more likely that a vegan would end up with the dairy cheese
Exactly, confuses matters and its shit enough ordering as an allergy sufferer, so much more scope to go wrong!

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 14/03/2022 17:52

Yes I had a McPlant and was so disappointed. I want a proper burger with the usual toppings, but a veggie pattie.

Kanaloa · 14/03/2022 17:53

Because it’s all the same. Most vegetarians I know will agree that all meat is unethical in their opinion. So if they had to hold it to that standards they wouldn’t be able to eat at any restaurant that sold meat. So very very few restaurants. Basically none.

But clearly you just want to have a little dig at vegetarians and so are pretending you don’t understand. Either that or you struggle to comprehend other people’s ideas even after they’ve been explained to you.

CaMePlaitPas · 14/03/2022 17:53

I used to love the old veggie bean burger at McDonald's, with a big dollop of real mayo too. Pure joy. Haven't tried this McPlant but I'm not convinced, is it beyond meat?

implantreplace · 14/03/2022 17:54

I don’t want to dig

I wanted to understand

But yet again - any kind of slightly spirited debate is relegated to “digs”

NeedAHoliday2021 · 14/03/2022 17:54

I love cheese so this would put me off being veggie. I don’t want to be vegan but do enjoy vegetarian food with eggs and cheese. I completely see how annoying this is.

BarleyTwister · 14/03/2022 17:55

@MissDollyMix

YANBU. So many of my veggie friends are getting annoying with phasing out of vegetarian food in favour of vegan.
Yes, its really annoying -ive been vegetarian for 45 years but now I'm forced to eat vegan cardboard as vegetarian options are disappearing.
Kanaloa · 14/03/2022 17:55

It’s been explained. If you wanted to understand you could read it carefully and if you had basic comprehension skills you’d understand. People make the best choices for themselves. If they refused to eat at any restaurant that sold meat or fish they’d likely not be able to ever eat out and be hugely restricted.

Mouseorchestra7 · 14/03/2022 17:56

I do understand what you mean. For those of us that love dairy, but don’t eat meat, there seems to be less choice now. It’s either vegan or not vegan.

Demelza21 · 14/03/2022 17:56

I love the Mcplant 😍 I eat fish and chicken but no red meat/pork etc so the mcplant is a good option for me too. It just tastes like a healthy beef burger to me although I'm sure it's probably not healthy whatsoever

Shrekles20 · 14/03/2022 17:57

It’s nice but I also agree I don’t like all these bloody looking vegan burgers in the supermarkets these days, they make me feel a bit sick 🤢

0blio · 14/03/2022 17:59

@Madeintowerhamlets

I totally agree OP. It’s just laziness in my opinion. It’s easier for restaurants to cater to vegans as a catch all rather than to cater for vegetarians as well.
Yes, this. I'm not vegetarian but have thought for some time how annoying this must be.
implantreplace · 14/03/2022 17:59

Just perfectly proves my point
