Vegan as the default. Specifically slightly annoyed with the McPlant

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian.

I want a McPlant with proper (if American cheese slices can be called proper) cheese.

I would like to order a Big Mac, and sub out the burgers for the plant burgers!

Surely there are more people like me?

Vegan options being the default for vegans and vegetarians is very annoying. AIBU?

(No this isn't all I have to worry about in life before someone says it.)

You are right though. Worst thing ever is vegan pastry. Greggs has a vegan sausage roll. The sausage is nice, the roll tastes like cardboard. There is no vegetarian option Angry

ineedsun · 14/03/2022 17:36

@KittenKong

It’s not even proper vegans. It’s the one meal a week-ers. No one ever took vegan seriously before the whole veganary thing took off (they were mocked worse than veggies before than).

I wonder how many full time vegans there are these days?

They still are mocked more than veggies! I try and avoid telling people because you get a selection of the following Bacon jokes Criticised for shoving it down peoples throats and never shutting up about it (even if they’ve known you four years and you’ve never mentioned it) Criticised for your personal role in the demise of farming (and therefore there will be fewer cows) People trying to point out that soya production or avocados are worse for animals and the environment than not eating animals. People assuming you’re an uptight judgy fucker when you’re sitting quietly listening to them judging your dietary choices.
IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/03/2022 17:37

YANBU in principle, but I disagree with you on the McPlant burger, I think it’s horrible, although it might be better with proper cheese.

FoxyFoxyLoxy · 14/03/2022 17:37

Everyone likes unhealthy food!

Ah that's where you're wrong, @dudsville. There are some very restricted eaters on MN who spend their days obsessing over food and how little they are eating. Competitive undereating as a sport. Bonus points for mention of a "massive salad".

That sort of person would spontaneously combust within 50 feet of a McDonalds.

ineedsun · 14/03/2022 17:38

@spanktastic

I'm lactose intolerant and most places have stopped doing a lactose free option, it's vegan or go without.
Isn’t vegan cheese lactose free?
minipie · 14/03/2022 17:38

YANBU OP.

I am an omnivore but historically would often choose the vegetarian option just because it looked appealing (I love cheese). I know many omnivores who are the same.

However, vegan options never appeal to me at all. So the result of this shift to vegan options rather than vegetarian is that I am more likely to eat meat.

implantreplace · 14/03/2022 17:39

But for a vegan or vegetarian due to ethics reasons… is a macdonalds the only option for “unhealthy” treat food?!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 14/03/2022 17:39

* Because I love a McFlurry! And their mozzarella sticks.*

But is your reason for vegetarianism and ethical obe?[/quote]
Yes. As I said in my first comment on here, I would love to be vegan but due to a number of allergies, it would be nearly impossible for me at the moment.

I try to eat ethically sourced dairy at home but I can’t police that at restaurants.

Scarecrowrowboat · 14/03/2022 17:40

Yanbu, I've been veggie since I was little and the last 10 years had gradually been seeing vegetarian options added to menus rather than having to get chips and a side salad. Now so many places just do a vegan option instead. Pubs in particular frequently seem to be jackfruit burger with vegan cheese, hate the texture of jackfruit, it's what I imagine meat is like to chew.

user1471600850 · 14/03/2022 17:40

Totally with you - I too am vegetarian but not vegan - a lot of places seem to assume it is the same thing, i.e. if you are veggie then you are happy with vegan but I personally love cheese and cream and mayo, etc, etc, and it is not the same:(

DaisyWaldron · 14/03/2022 17:40

I'm allergic to nuts and I have no idea what it is but something in vegan fake cheese and meat gives me hideous griping stomach pains (I'm fine with tofu and pulses though) so the trend of vegan only options has ironically led to me choosing the meat options when eating out most of the time, when I would previously have gone for veggie.

implantreplace · 14/03/2022 17:40

I am genuinely curious what would make a vegan o vegetarian due to ethical reasons

Want to enter a macdonalds?

Genuine question

Isonthecase · 14/03/2022 17:40

Vegan cheese is SO BAD so yanbu

nordica · 14/03/2022 17:41

I agree up to a point (also a vegetarian) but I think with McPlant in particular, maybe it's easier for the staff this way? I don't know if every McDonald's is the same but my local one seems to make lots of mistakes with orders as it is (especially if you order it from Uber Eats - the local FB group is full of complaints!). If there were different cheese and sauce options, it would be even more likely that a vegan would end up with the dairy cheese.

Pizza Hut does good Beyond Meat veggie pizzas with real cheese though. Grin

Kanaloa · 14/03/2022 17:41

@implantreplace

Well there really aren’t many ethically vegetarian chain restaurants. Maybe in some big cities. But a vegetarian version of McDonald’s? No, that doesn’t exist.

And if you had to be that strict you’d struggle to buy food normally anywhere. Most places sell a mix of things.

IvyTwines · 14/03/2022 17:42

@edenhills

Why are you vegetarian? Obviously it's not about animal welfare or you would be vegan. If it's about health then why are you eating in McDonalds?
Well I just typed 'vegan' into Twitter and suddenly my timeline is full of adverts for high-end fashion brands (including one associated strongly with real fur), beauty products and fashion magazines. NEVER had that before, so Twitter's algorithms clearly suggest a motive for contemporary veganism is obtaining a fashionably designer-label skinny body rather than the Left-leaning hippy motives of yore.
WonderfulYou · 14/03/2022 17:42

YABU they can’t offer everything and customising everything will lead to confusion and longer waiting times and they are all about being fast paced. It would also be too easy to put real cheese in one meant for something who is truly vegan and that could lead to all sorts of trouble.
I would assume cross contamination is a massive issue too.

The fact is they are a business and financially it’s better to cater to vegans which is also suitable for vegetarians rather than cater for vegetarians which isn’t suitable for vegans.

I mean I’ve answered you already. So if you’re so so genuinely curious you could read the reply.

If vegetarians could only shop at places that sell ethically sourced vegetarian food and nothing else they would need to be quite rich and would have a very restricted diet.

gingerhills · 14/03/2022 17:43

DS1 is veggie and he often asks for the vegan option but with real cheese. He usually gets it in most places.

spanktastic · 14/03/2022 17:44

ineedsun yes and it's also rank, so is soya milk, I'm not vegan, it would be nice sometimes to have a lactose free option

implantreplace · 14/03/2022 17:45

The need to go to a fast food chain must be quite something!

EeeICouldRipATissue · 14/03/2022 17:45

YABU.
There's always someone moaning, isn't there?! Grin
The McPlant is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Take your own pack of plastic cheese to put on.
(love the McPlant)

CaMePlaitPas · 14/03/2022 17:46

@ineedsun genuinely giggling, I've clearly been on this site too long if I'm piling onto the anti vegan sausages in hotels bandwagon Blush

TheBareTree · 14/03/2022 17:46

I hate this too. So many restaurants now just have vegan instead of veggie options. I find it so annoying. I want eggs and I want cheese.

implantreplace · 14/03/2022 17:46

I’m not talking about shopping

I’m talking about getting fast food

Surely not the same?

And Macdonalds isn’t any old place

It is somewhere with a horrific reputation for historical treatment of animals used in its food.

Hence my curiosity
