To be absolutely terrified of war

ladylalatub · 24/02/2022 16:01

Putin has threatened severe consequences unlike any ever experienced before, if any Western countries intervene. I have relatives in Africa and am wondering whether to evacuate the UK now before it's too late. A Chinese official on Channel 4 the other day said this would trigger Armageddon. Is anywhere safe in the world if things escalate? Are we all doomed? I was at the market earlier and heard some students talking about learning how to use a gun and conscription not being far off. This is all really scary.

@RollWithThePunches

I sometimes think a lot of these young, forward thinking leaders (Trudeau, Macron) lack a gravitas and steadiness in their bodies that shows how inexperienced and removed they are from real conflict and their own countries’ histories.

Bellalastrasse · 25/02/2022 22:54

Sorry finished too soon- I thought Zelensky might be different. Are you comfortable saying where you are from?

BeyondPurpleTulips · 25/02/2022 22:59

@MonStylo

Where the people going nuts about this on Mumsnet today alive (or older than a young child) in 1991? It was way more scary then, I was terrified by “When the wild blows”. Still here though.
Don't blame us millennials for any over-reacting to nuclear threat!

We (the older of us) saw the Cold War end without being the Armageddon we were told it would be. We're a lot more scared of terrorism - seeing the end stages of the IRA, 9/11 and 7/7 in our formative years - than Russia. The Russian Federation borders have been disputed in one way or another as long as the country has existed!

BronskiBeaten · 25/02/2022 23:03

I’m from NI and feel the same as @RollWithThePunches

I know most of you won’t consider our lives are in parallel with Ukraine but I’ve also been taken hostage and have seen the devastation of bombing first hand. It’s only in recent years since mental health became fashionable that support has been available.

I just want to put my arms around everyone in Ukraine and keep them safe.

User727769 · 25/02/2022 23:03

@Livelovebehappy

But no other countries are going to intervene OP. Governments have confirmed there will be no intervention other than the sanctions. And that’s how it should be - I don’t want my family to suffer any consequences. We are all aware of the potential for this to massively escalate should we start threatening a war with Russia. We have to let this play out in the Ukraine, however heartbreaking it is to watch, because we don’t want to place a target on our own backs.
Assuming he doesn't then attempt to invade a NATO country next to Ukraine? Then we are obliged to intervene and have sent troops already to Romania.
User727769 · 25/02/2022 23:06

*sent troops already to Estonia rather

EezyOozy · 25/02/2022 23:11

Can I ask a stupid question? If Putin is unwell, and going mad, and has threatened to "strike back" at (eg nuke) any country that interferes with Russia's actions in Ukraine.... can he not be overthrown/assassinated? Aren't people in the inner sanctums of Russian power thinking "Oh God, he's gone mad , he's going to blow the world up (possibly), he's bombed an orphanage ... let plot your over throw him?"

Like, how can one mad old bloke have so much power ? There must be people close to him who could intervene?

EezyOozy · 25/02/2022 23:11

*let's plot to overthrow him

Magicmelodies21 · 25/02/2022 23:21

I have scared myself silly reading too much about this !! Can’t quite believe this is happening Sad

Itsnotover · 25/02/2022 23:22

This is a very sad video to watch by a Russian women who evidently is of the opinion that most Russians don’t support this war and it was a shock to them too.

i understand your perspectives, but when humanity heads for the stars, then thats a whole new scary battlefield.

if all else fails, theres always major attack option 1

depends if the various figures, actually want the "nukes" launched, then if they do, they would need a fall person, incase it goes wrong.

whos to say any particular building could actually be a cover for another building eg "church" is then a secret lab ect, so it looks like one building type has been took out when it was just a cover. think credit dauphine as an example.
TheHateIsNotGood · 25/02/2022 23:38

Whilst Putin the Nutter is out rampaging, and helping out countries, liberating them from themselves - don't forget Transnistria, a self-declared independent, very poor strip of land adjoining the far sw of Ukraine and Moldova, the poorest country in Europe.

Mamanyt · 26/02/2022 00:08

I am old enough to remember Nikita Khruschev pounding his shoe on his podium, and screaming, "WE WILL BURY YOU!" to Americans. We are still here. It is the natural of malignant dictators to threaten and bully.

As for Putin, he's losing his country, a bit at a time. Hundreds of thousands are currently standing up and protesting his invasion of Ukraine.

Breathe deep. We aren't "there" yet.

Itsnotover · 26/02/2022 00:20

One thing to bear in mind about Putin is that, vile though he is, he loves the finer things in life. He's not going to want to be hiding out from nuclear fall out. He made sure his yacht got back safely from Germany before he started the war 🤔

Me too. Collective trauma is a thing... No wonder we have such a high number of MH issues. The 70s and 80s were horrendous, but as children we thought it was normal life. Not sure what's going to happen in Ukraine... Praying for sanity to prevail.

@MorrisZapp

I've got an incredibly stupid question to ask. If this horror show is truly the result of one unhinged megalomaniac, why doesn't someone just take him out? Destabilising vast areas of the world and slaughtering innocents to appease one ego seems insane.

Russia is corrupt as fuck, pay someone, arm them and boom boom. Problem solved.

I know I'm wrong, but why am I wrong?

This!!!
Bushgirl · 26/02/2022 02:16

@MsTSwift

Seems to be what happens if men are allowed to be in charge
Obviously you weren't around during the Thatcher years then.

Agree although his prime minister is worse by all accounts - would he take over?

Is this truly happening? Are we really having these conversations at 4am Sad

Schlerp · 26/02/2022 04:31

Just like Johnson, putin doesn’t work in isolation. He is the figurehead but he has swathes of equally as bonkers people around him, encouraging him. He’s a megalomaniac puppet. And like Johnson, if he goes by whatever means and the atmosphere is still one of supremacy then he’ll be replaced by someone in a very similar vain.

I said yanbu to be afraid of war but I overheard someone talking today saying if they press the button, it will be over with so quickly that you’ll be unlikely to realise. There’s no point being anxious over that which you cannot control.

OmgIThinkILikeYou · 26/02/2022 05:33

@Weefreetiffany

Did you feel that way about Afghanistan and Iraq? Did those wars ever really finish? Take a breath and stop panicking. You’re just giving them what they want.
I was a teenager when we went into that war and remember being terrified.
mamabear715 · 26/02/2022 06:30

@BronskiBeaten @Musermum
Hugs to you both.. xx

KentdonMum · 26/02/2022 07:12

YANBU But it’s extreme to think about evacuating to Africa. If there’s a nuclear war (which I doubt) that would be the end for everyone I reckon. You need to not give credence to those kind of thoughts. Life has to go on and you’ll just screw up your mental health stressing out over something you can nothing about.

My Grandma gave birth to my dad when you practically hear the jackboots and see Hitler and Goebbels were waving at us from Calais. I often wonder what it must have been like bringing new life into the world with the threat of Nazi invasion a real possibility and under the hardships of rationing and general terror

Kassle · 26/02/2022 08:00

Zelenskyy scares me more. He’s not prepared for this despite the warnings for years. His desperate pleas for support sound like a drowning man clawing the sides of the deep well.

I think Zelenskiy has balls of steal. He's displaying true leadership. I don't identify with what you've said here at all.
