To be absolutely terrified of war

Putin has threatened severe consequences unlike any ever experienced before, if any Western countries intervene. I have relatives in Africa and am wondering whether to evacuate the UK now before it's too late. A Chinese official on Channel 4 the other day said this would trigger Armageddon. Is anywhere safe in the world if things escalate? Are we all doomed? I was at the market earlier and heard some students talking about learning how to use a gun and conscription not being far off. This is all really scary.

Well reading about a potential radiation cloud over Europe if they attack Chernobyl has got my stomach flipping wildly. So the press are doing a fantastic job at terrifying us right now.

It’s interesting that the American people I communicate with through online groups are also shutting themselves. It proves how global this is. I don’t think Africa is going to be the salve you hope it might be.

Makes a change from discussing gender pronouns, statues and what shade of blue hair is in this term.

I can’t understand what anyone is worried about. Putin wants Ukraine for its assets and sea access. He isn’t interested in Britain. He is interested in spreading fear and panic in this country though.

I am mildly concerned about my husband as he is a soldier but that is where my concern ends.

MonStylo · 24/02/2022 17:02

There was a radiation cloud over Europe when Chernobyl went up, impacted the movement of sheep where I lived

MonStylo · 24/02/2022 17:04

Difference between now and Coild War is people then weren’t on online forums comparing degrees to which they were shitting themselves

etulosba · 24/02/2022 17:08

Where the people going nuts about this on Mumsnet today alive (or older than a young child) in 1991? It was way more scary then,

I was. What happened in 1991?

MsTSwift · 24/02/2022 17:14

Seems to be what happens if men are allowed to be in charge

WonderfulYou · 24/02/2022 17:14

There is always too much bad things going on in the world to put too much thought into it.

I do care but I try not to give things too much head space else you’ll drive yourself into depression.

Focus on what you can control.
Then look to see how you can help things close to you like the homeless, the elderly, animals, children etc.
There’s only so much one person can do.

First Gulf War.

As far as I can remember there was nobody threatening to fire nukes at us, nor were the Iraqis capable of invading Europe.

leopooh · 24/02/2022 17:18

Realistically the main thing to worry about is the cost of living crisis which will not get worse.

newhairday · 24/02/2022 17:21

@Deliberateplanning

What of any worth would be left to him?

Maybe he doesn't care, maybe he's been diagnosed with a terminal illness? Maybe he's just totally paranoid or has the beginnings of dementia? Not sure that logic stands up to much sadly.

Surely hopefully he has advisors or someone to stop him. Clutching at straws

MonStylo · 24/02/2022 17:22

Cold War ended in 1991. Seems like no one noticed.

To be absolutely terrified of war I think we all are.
I'm not. I'm not terrified of anything that is beyond my control

Gosh I wish I could be like this. I have awful anxiety over pretty much everything Sad

leopooh · 24/02/2022 17:23

sorry it will get worse!

dippyduck1 · 24/02/2022 17:25

As a military mum I am concerned

I'm surprised, I'd have guessed at 1989. I don't remember there being any perceived threat by 1991.
MorrisZapp · 24/02/2022 17:32

I've got an incredibly stupid question to ask. If this horror show is truly the result of one unhinged megalomaniac, why doesn't someone just take him out? Destabilising vast areas of the world and slaughtering innocents to appease one ego seems insane.

Russia is corrupt as fuck, pay someone, arm them and boom boom. Problem solved.

I know I'm wrong, but why am I wrong?

MrsMillhouse · 24/02/2022 17:33

Nah, i feel very sorry for anyone caught up in this, but I don’t spend much time worrying that the Uk will be “going to war”

covilha · 24/02/2022 17:33

Well, if you want to evacuate go sooner rather than later. People tend to late until the reason to evacuate has arrived and by then it is (usually) too late to flee. Yes, Putin will likely follow through on his threats to the west, just as he did on his threats to invade Ukraine. So your family’s safety must always be your number one priority xx

forcedfun · 24/02/2022 17:34

@MorrisZapp I always wondered the same about Hitler. I guess the reality is they have enough sympathisers, a big propaganda machine...

I wonder what's going on in the shadows? As in spies, assassins...
Nickwinkle · 24/02/2022 17:38

I'm terrified my DH is going to get called out to Poland...

He's a reserve in the Polish army and if this escalates over to Poland then there's a chance he will be summoned.

The thought of losing him absolutely breaks me.

Nidan2Sandan · 24/02/2022 17:40

@leopooh

sorry it will get worse!
Why are you sorry? Is this your fault? Why are you apologising?

It has its downsides too. People who don't know me well think I'm uncaring and cold! It's the way I deal with life though.

Perhaps Daniel Craig has been drafted into his next mission. Sadly M15 is not what it was.
