To be absolutely terrified of war

Putin has threatened severe consequences unlike any ever experienced before, if any Western countries intervene. I have relatives in Africa and am wondering whether to evacuate the UK now before it's too late. A Chinese official on Channel 4 the other day said this would trigger Armageddon. Is anywhere safe in the world if things escalate? Are we all doomed? I was at the market earlier and heard some students talking about learning how to use a gun and conscription not being far off. This is all really scary.

If he is that is good. He has made a declaration on youtube, I was about to watch it, haven't done so yet.

@flobot7 whether he is doing ok in action right now is one thing, whether he will be able to deal with what comes next is quite another.
Experience in politics, or in careers where there are crossover skills is absolutely needed I think. But I hope I am wrong.

Roussette · 27/02/2022 21:08

Some career politicians prove that very wrong at times
Unfortunately.

Fairisleflora · 27/02/2022 21:13

I think any lack of experience in politics is overwhelmed by excellent social media skills. Putin thought Ukraine would be a piece of cake, now he realises he is trying to attack a country where each and every person loathes everything he stands for, and many totally normal people are armed to the teeth. That’s Zalensky who has managed to light fires in his countrymen’s hearts, by fearlessly remaining in Kyiv. Last week Putin was no doubt planning to execute him and get a leader like the Belorussian president in his place, but if they try that they are going to double the intensity of anti Putin feeling in the world. Even Trump is back-tracking against Putin. It’s going very badly for Putin indeed.

Fairisleflora · 27/02/2022 21:16

Feel free to feel scared, but the chances of you coming to harm are very, very remote. Look at the Ukrainian grannies making Molotov cocktails, the villagers standing in front of tanks, the teachers signing up and being armed. They are the people who ought to be scared, but they are not giving Putin the satisfaction. Don’t give him the satisfaction either.

Yes that is very true!

YANBU - it is a very scary situation especially in this day and age when the youngest of us have never experienced or lived through something like this or potentially having to deal with this becoming our own reality. I seriously think someone just needs to take Putin out and assassinate him… Donald Trump is an asshole but I think he would have been the only leader with the balls to actually do it…

Ciaram55 · 27/02/2022 21:25

Surely they have a system in place that in the event of a deranged mad man in charge, they can seize him and put him under house arrest.

Donald Trump called the aggression "genius" and "wonderful ". Don't pretend he would have helped. He would have used the situation to gain friendship with Russia.

@Dinosaurs1994

A (very selfish granted) part of me wishes Ukraine would just surrender.

Millions of lives could be lost throughout this and for what?

Ukraine's leader has been urging the civilians to take up arms and fight. Civilians for fuck sake.

People say Putin won't be satisfied with Ukraine and will push on and on, so wait for him to try it with a NATO country and then get involved. Not now.

The crazy bastard is threatening us with nuclear war. I'm sorry but any well intended loyalty to Ukraine shouldn't come before our own countries safety.

I'm gob smacked that the UK is getting involved at all in light of such threats.

Boris is an idiot. Does he not care about his family?

I know none of this is right, but those are my thoughts along with praying somebody takes him out first

So Ukraine surrenders - and what do you think happens next - Putin decides that's enough and doesn't take it any further? He's already started to threaten Finland and Sweden
Mydogmylife · 27/02/2022 22:05

@Dinosaurs1994

Would you say the same if it was the UK?

Unfortunately yes I would. As cowardly as that may be.

I would sooner live under somebody else's rule than risk death.

Putin as my president or being without my children / my children being without me. No contest. I would do whatever, and agree to whatever, to preserve life.

Fortunately (or possibly not) Ukraine's leader isn't as terrified or cowardly as I am.

Im afraid that is pretty cowardly. I don't think living with someone like Putin as your president in an occupied country would necessarily allow you to live with your children - it didn't go that way for the families under hitler/ any other despot.

@hassletassle

Can I ask a stupid question? If Putin is unwell, and going mad, and has threatened to "strike back" at (eg nuke) any country that interferes with Russia's actions in Ukraine.... can he not be overthrown/assassinated? Aren't people in the inner sanctums of Russian power thinking "Oh God, he's gone mad , he's going to blow the world up (possibly), he's bombed an orphanage ... let plot your over throw him?"

Like, how can one mad old bloke have so much power ? There must be people close to him who could intervene?

Agree. His aggression seems so irrational.
Bellalastrasse · 28/02/2022 10:44

There was a plot to kill Hitler by his generals wasn’t there? Towards the end?

etulosba · 28/02/2022 10:59

Yes, it didn’t end well for the plotters.

needacorset · 01/03/2022 11:59

@hassletassle

I've got an incredibly stupid question to ask. If this horror show is truly the result of one unhinged megalomaniac, why doesn't someone just take him out? Destabilising vast areas of the world and slaughtering innocents to appease one ego seems insane.

This is what I was getting at; I don't understand !!

Agree. Especially as RAF is allowed to shoot down Russian warplanes. Just take out one deranged megalomaniac whose aggression seems so irrational.
Bellalastrasse · 01/03/2022 16:20

So, realistically what would be the best way? It would have to be someone in his inner circle or field of contact.

Yea lady? Cleaner? Someone put something into the polish that becomes poisonous once she’s left the room? Toilet cleaner that turns into a noxious gas when he urinates on it? Pillows filled with some sort of dust that he breathes in overnight? Poisoned shoes that activate once he starts walking?

I don’t know. I’m sitting in a cage writing these but there must be something his people can do. They’ve got form for this haven't they? Or is that just in Salisbury?

Bellalastrasse · 01/03/2022 16:21

*Tea lady

*Cafe. I’m not sitting in a cage, I promise.
