To be absolutely terrified of war

Putin has threatened severe consequences unlike any ever experienced before, if any Western countries intervene. I have relatives in Africa and am wondering whether to evacuate the UK now before it's too late. A Chinese official on Channel 4 the other day said this would trigger Armageddon. Is anywhere safe in the world if things escalate? Are we all doomed? I was at the market earlier and heard some students talking about learning how to use a gun and conscription not being far off. This is all really scary.

OP posts:

There are astonishing amounts of obvious bs being spouted on this thread.

I agree. There are also certain posters with a negative mindset on every thread.

Why would a Chinese official think that your evacuation to Africa will trigger Armageddon? I'm beyond baffled here.

mamabear715 · 25/02/2022 20:28

I'm sorry, OP, that you're so frightened.
This is exactly the point I was trying to make on the newsround post on here. The more we find out, the more some of us think about it, dwell on it, worry about it.
It's hard to switch off.
I'm clocking on a bit now & have lived through a lot of things that have been mentioned on here, scary as they seemed at the time. I can disassociate myself from it all now, I'll catch the news headlines but no more than that, exactly as I did during the worst of the pandemic. However much we think & worry, it's not going to change anything. Please try & just continue with your normal life & see your GP for help if it gets too much. Hugs.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/02/2022 20:30

Very scary. Rumours are they'll bring back conscription for all able bodied men

I had a long spat on here with someone about this!!!!

  1. there is a thread on Reddit about this. No one wants to do it.
  2. l asked DS who is a journalist on well known national news. He burst out laughing. Then he said no one would go anyway.
SnozPoz · 25/02/2022 20:44

Two weeks, no, days ago ago people were being interviewed in Ukraine saying they didn't think there was going to be a war and they were staying put... this despite countries all round the world saying "get out now" to their citizens. In the last 24 hours Putin basically told the rest of the world not to get involved or he'd nuke them. I think it is absolutely right to be concerned. And the world shouldn't stand by... so we all need to be hoping those sanctions work. Which they won't.

Orcacrazy · 25/02/2022 21:05

I’m more worried about the appeasement of such a megalomaniac and bully. We should stand up to him .
The “oh well I’ll worry when prices affect me “NMCNMM brigade scares me far more though.

Itsnotover · 25/02/2022 21:11

Also there is an on off thing with North Korea. Every now and again it starts. At some point I noticed that it always seems to blow up in April.

There was a discussion in the mainstream news at the time about whether the US would be able to 'take out NK' in one strike. This would be equally as worrying as Russia going rogue because China are NK allies.

JonSnowIsALoser · 25/02/2022 21:29

I wouldn't panic jut yet, but that is pretty much how WWI and WWII started - local European conflicts getting bigger. There's nothing we can do about it though, but if you have an option to leave Europe, keep it in mind as Plan B.

JonSnowIsALoser · 25/02/2022 21:32

As to "what would Putin achieve by starting a nuclear war" - who knows what's going on on his obviously paranoid head? I'm seriously wondering whether he got diagnosed with some terminal illness, has nothing to lose and wants to take the world with him if he has to go. Megalomaniacs like him don't care for consequences.

Dovecare · 25/02/2022 21:34

You are nbu but listen up. I am 72 now and still in one piece. Between the ages of 13 and around 25 I worried myself sick about ww3 being round the corner. We had Suez, Vietnam, nuclear armament and the cold War with Russia. My friends were actively involved with CND. I woke up in the morning and went to sleep at night worrying about something that never happened. Don't let your concerns spoil your youth like we did ours. All that worry for nothing.

Makes a change from discussing gender pronouns, statues and what shade of blue hair is in this term.

I'm wondering the same thing tonight. there are reasons behind attacking Ukraine. I don't agree with them but I understand the reasons.

Threatening Sweden and Finland is just ridiculous though. It's not a matter of him trying to rebuild the USSR, this madman is trying to rebuild the Russian Empire.

notsosupermam · 25/02/2022 21:52

I am also terrified OP. My eldest DS is in his last leg of armed forces training and I am shitting myself.
On one hand I'm hoping and praying that we don't get involved physically but then I see those poor people on the news and wish we were helping more.

Roussette · 25/02/2022 21:56

He has been diagnosed with a degenaritive disease. Of course that's been kept quiet, but I read that on multiple sites, including Russian ones

TheHateIsNotGood · 25/02/2022 22:17

I remember back in the 1970s, as a teenager, I felt resigned to the fact that us Brit/Ire Islanders were going to be annihilated in some nuclear holocaust as both the USSR and USA pressed their Red Buttons coz we're pretty much in the middle between them.

"No Future" - Punk and all that Junk (ref Mr Bosanquet) - and it didn't happen and the Berlin Wall came down instead. Don't be afraid OP, Putin has gone rather 'nuts' - never mind all of us, the Russian people themselves won't put up with this BS and they are very good at self-organization and overthrowing regimes.

Yes, it's a very serious situation, but at least 3-4 generations of most Europeans are anti-war, so it will be ok. To cheer you up:

Thank you for this... It made me laugh out loud
Livelovebehappy · 25/02/2022 22:25

But no other countries are going to intervene OP. Governments have confirmed there will be no intervention other than the sanctions. And that’s how it should be - I don’t want my family to suffer any consequences. We are all aware of the potential for this to massively escalate should we start threatening a war with Russia. We have to let this play out in the Ukraine, however heartbreaking it is to watch, because we don’t want to place a target on our own backs.

Chakraleaf · 25/02/2022 22:26

I was OK earlier....now so nervous I can't sleep.

Choccy21 · 25/02/2022 22:32

How can one man be allowed to dictate to the rest of the world?
Putin is bullying everyone. And knows everyone is scared.

This ^^ the world governments probably know far more than any of us do anyway. We only hear what they want us to.
Itsnotover · 25/02/2022 22:37

One other thing I wanted to say. Has anyone else noticed anti-vaxxers and Covid deniers now shifting their crappy narratives to being an apologist for Putin?

RollWithThePunches · 25/02/2022 22:39

I grew up surrounded by gunmen, tanks and being taken hostage. I survived. Physically anyway. Zelenskyy scares me more. He’s not prepared for this despite the warnings for years. His desperate pleas for support sound like a drowning man clawing the sides of the deep well.

It’s the start of something that will involve us all. How can you not be affected?

TonyBravo · 25/02/2022 22:41

Conscription won't get anyone anywhere, we live in a country where people were having tantrums about wearing a mask in Tesco, imagine what will happen if they're told they're going to fight in a war?! It won't happen.

Yes so much of this on Twitter

Only the hard left, anti west types in my circles. But they have always been somewhat pro Russia anyway so it wasn't suprising
