To be absolutely terrified of war

ladylalatub · 24/02/2022 16:01

Putin has threatened severe consequences unlike any ever experienced before, if any Western countries intervene. I have relatives in Africa and am wondering whether to evacuate the UK now before it's too late. A Chinese official on Channel 4 the other day said this would trigger Armageddon. Is anywhere safe in the world if things escalate? Are we all doomed? I was at the market earlier and heard some students talking about learning how to use a gun and conscription not being far off. This is all really scary.

Makes a change from discussing gender pronouns, statues and what shade of blue hair is in this term.

I've got an incredibly stupid question to ask. If this horror show is truly the result of one unhinged megalomaniac, why doesn't someone just take him out? Destabilising vast areas of the world and slaughtering innocents to appease one ego seems insane.

This is what I was getting at; I don't understand !!

He's too well protected. We would need the Russians themselves to do the job. Nobody else could get close enough.

This is what I’m hoping for, it will need to be one of his own men that does the deed.

Poetic justice.

Zwellers · 26/02/2022 20:23

You want to leave to UK to flee the politically stable and peaceful conflict free continent of Africa. OK then

poloniunus · 27/02/2022 11:20

@Kassle

Zelenskyy scares me more. He’s not prepared for this despite the warnings for years. His desperate pleas for support sound like a drowning man clawing the sides of the deep well.

I think Zelenskiy has balls of steal. He's displaying true leadership. I don't identify with what you've said here at all.

I don't know. Zelensky was an actor before 2019, and one film was the part of a teacher who becomes the Ukrainian PM! I just don't see how someone with that background is going to have the knowledge and experience to handle this.
Roussette · 27/02/2022 12:18

You are not informed about Zelensky at all... very judgmental too.

His father is an expert in Cybernetics, mother an engineer, Zelensky has a degree in law, and he went into politics to bring decent people to power.

I'd rather him than the self serving ego driven clown we're landed with.

When offered safe passage out of Kyiv by the US, he immediately turned it down to stay with his people. I can't see that happening here.
Zelensky knows what he's doing.

@forcedfun

are these actually real people starting all these threads?
I suspect Russian bots.

😛😛😛😛

He seems to be doing very well. He is definitely the leader Ukraine needs now.

RitaJosephina · 27/02/2022 12:33

@THisbackwithavengeance
Agree. I understand people are scared, but these speculations don't help anyone, but only fuel Russian propaganda and spread fake news.

Diamondsareforever123 · 27/02/2022 13:17

TBH I am terrified of everything. it's all so dreadful. Life has taken a severe turn for the worse. We have, and still have a pandemic, there is a war in Europe, cost of living is hitting the roof. I can't see any of this getting better. OK there probably won't be a nuclear war, but the costs to people in the Ukraine and wider Europe are going to be immense.

Cognoscenti · 27/02/2022 13:37

To people doubting Zelensky - Boris Johnson has a 2:1 degree in Classics, from a college he undoubtedly got into through privilege and coming from a wealthy family. He's also proven time and time again how incompetent he is - it's not like the UK is doing great in terms of leadership.
And you know for a fact if there was a war, Boris would be on a private jet out the country, or safe in his bunker if there wasn't time, babbling about how sorry he was for the rest of us left to fight or be killed.

Kassle · 27/02/2022 13:39

I just don't see how someone with that background is going to have the knowledge and experience to handle this.

I think he's proving he does as we speak.

During his inaugural address in 2019, Zelensky told lawmakers: “I do not want my picture in your offices: the President is not an icon, an idol or a portrait. Hang your kids' photos instead, and look at them each time you are making a decision.”

Aye, he certainly seems to be an all round decent bloke. Something we perhaps don't recognise in this country. I'd doubt our PMs credentials and morals and motives a million times over Zelensky. His own people know he's got their back. People come into politics from all walks of life. But it takes honesty and integrity to make a great leader.

Choccy21 · 27/02/2022 15:33

Has Putin broken international law? Or committed war crimes?
Can he be arrested? Serious question?

Remember Milosovich and Sadam Hussein we’re both found guilty of war crimes?

etulosba · 27/02/2022 16:19

They were guilty of genocide.

shoeshshoes · 27/02/2022 18:38

@Roussette

Putin is ill. It was reported a while back. A degenerative disease I believe.
Is this true?
Roussette · 27/02/2022 18:44

shoes No idea. There was press back in 2020 talking of him having Parkinsons. He does take steroids.

Don't shoot the messenger. No idea how true this is.

poloniunus · 27/02/2022 20:25

@Roussette

Zelensky knows what he's doing.

I wasn't being judgemental and in relation to being badly informed, any of us with a professional career will tell you you don't step outside college and just suddenly be competent, for most careers it takes experience in the field to become competent. It does in law. Zelensky might have got a law degree but he left after uni to become an actor. A law degree relates to law within your own jurisdiction, it does not tell you anything about politics or world affairs. He has zero years experience of politics or acting on the stage of world affairs, before 2019, and only a couple of years in office?

I am not saying he isn't a nice guy, or that he isn't brave, I am saying he lacks experience in politics.

And my worry is that this is going to be significant however brave he is. Russia asked for a ceasefire meeting today, wanting the meeting today. Zelensky is not ready. I can't understand why he is putting his country at risk of more damage on principle.

If you can explain it to me, please do!

FloBot7 · 27/02/2022 20:35

I am saying he lacks experience in politics.

I'm not sure experience in politics helps here. You can't reason with the unreasonable. I think he's faring better than any of our seasoned politicians would. Agree with others that Borris and his mates in parliament would have been out here like a shot if offered passage in the same conditions. Obviously because they'd be at higher risk than us plebs, of course, nothing to do with their cowardice.

Roussette · 27/02/2022 20:37

Reports say he IS meeting Russia on the Belarus border. But there are very many conflicting reports out there.

Feel free to have your opinion, I have mine.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/02/2022 20:40

I find him passionate and brave. What you need in a good leader. Just like Boris really…….

Boris and his ilk would be faster than rats off a sinking ship in his situation.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 27/02/2022 20:41

I'd love to know what 'experience in politics' means. Is a good leader supposed to have a couple of decades 'experience' or is it not enough to identify with your people. To have integrity? What is the perfect background for a political leader?
