To be absolutely terrified of war

Putin has threatened severe consequences unlike any ever experienced before, if any Western countries intervene. I have relatives in Africa and am wondering whether to evacuate the UK now before it's too late. A Chinese official on Channel 4 the other day said this would trigger Armageddon. Is anywhere safe in the world if things escalate? Are we all doomed? I was at the market earlier and heard some students talking about learning how to use a gun and conscription not being far off. This is all really scary.

Ffs, balls of STEEL.

Chakraleaf · 26/02/2022 08:17

@Kassle

Zelenskyy scares me more. He’s not prepared for this despite the warnings for years. His desperate pleas for support sound like a drowning man clawing the sides of the deep well.

I think Zelenskiy has balls of steal. He's displaying true leadership. I don't identify with what you've said here at all.

Agree. Boris would have been long gone.

I'm always amazed on this mainly UK site just how many are rightfully horrified by invasions while at the same time acting as though this is a foreign concept that a country could do this. Britain is a world leader in invasions!! I am Irish and growing up it was the English we spoke about in fear or when we played games "the English are coming ". In the north Catholics couldnt actually vote and were dominated by Unionists who were put in power by the British Government (see plantations and Gerry-mandering). I mean how many countries have Britain colonised?
I hope and pray for the people of Ukraine, absolutely horrifying to see them having to go into the undergrounds and flee their won country.

MsTSwift · 26/02/2022 08:31

Humans have always invaded each other sadly been going on for thousands of years.

EezyOozy · 26/02/2022 08:39

I've got an incredibly stupid question to ask. If this horror show is truly the result of one unhinged megalomaniac, why doesn't someone just take him out? Destabilising vast areas of the world and slaughtering innocents to appease one ego seems insane.

This is what I was getting at; I don't understand !!

toconclude · 26/02/2022 08:45

@wonderstuff

We are one of the safest countries on earth. Last successful invasion of mainland UK was 1066. Things might start getting expensive as oil prices rise, there may be cyber attacks, but there will not be a war on UK soil anytime soon.
1688 actually, although your point stands

And we were beaten by the British state with rocks and iron bars when we dared to peacefully march for our basic civil rights like the vote! Maybe people will finally see that the end of British rule in Ireland is the right thing to do.

We like to think that the world, and particularly Europe, exists in more enlightened times though. It's only when war breaks out in Europe that our illusions are shattered. Wars elsewhere, particularly those not involving us, don't have the same mental impact on us.

The UK is still as guilty as anyone though. We've recently spent over £6bn on two aircraft carriers which have no possible role in the defence of the UK but are only useful in an offensive role in other areas of the world.

Owieeee · 26/02/2022 10:09

Maybe some British believe that the British army were there on a peacekeeping mission in northern Ireland like !! I mean Bloody Sunday (one of them) wasnt even that long ago, totally innocent civilians murdered by the British army of which ppl are so proud of on here .. not to mention the much earlier bloody sunday where the British army drove a tank into a football stadium in Ireland and fired into the crowd. Are people on here aware of this? This was the British army.

@LoisLane66

Certain murderous Irish individuals tarred and feathered women. The RoI didn't like NI being British. You've a long standing hatred of the English and Protestants. That's racist. The English didn't start the war. Southern Ireland did.
Are you really that ignorant or are you trolling?
LemonSwan · 26/02/2022 10:54

I did say to DP yesterday he should learn to shoot. I used to shoot very well; but poorer eyesight now and I think I would be barred due to MH history so good to have someone in the house as its a useful skill to keep in the back pocket.

I dont think they will do conscription. If this kicks off its WW3. If we add all the countries armies together thats quite a lot before conscription starts and Putin is so unhinged he will probably get the nukes out before then.

I genuinely think hes unwell - perhaps dementia as he seems to be going back decades to USSR era thinking. I am not sure how they go about sectioning a world leader but someone needs to figure it out.

Absolute shite. You are utterly clueless. You have no idea what your precious British army got up to in the North. They were thugs and murderers.

My parents, including my mum who was pregnant at the time, were beaten up by the British army at Burntollet, their crime? Peacefully marching for fair voting.

Owieeee · 26/02/2022 12:08

@LoisLane66 I hope you are a troll as this is absolutely untrue. Please open a history book. Also obviously northern Ireland wasn't British originally, you do realise that yes. Britain occupation and invaded all of Ireland by force with an army , this is what happened like many other parts of the world ; India etc.

Owieeee · 26/02/2022 12:09

@LoisLane66 do you know of the plantations in NI?

JudgeJ · 26/02/2022 12:51

Me too. Collective trauma is a thing... No wonder we have such a high number of MH issues. The 70s and 80s were horrendous, but as children we thought it was normal life. Not sure what's going to happen in Ukraine... Praying for sanity to prevail.

So very true, my adult children were amazed to learn recently about the precautions we had to take in the early 80s, living with the military in Germany, checking under the car every morning and crossing fingers as one turned the ignition key, having in the drawer the official plans for evacuating families in case the Russians invaded. They just remembered a childhood. If people are 'anxious' about the Ukraine then stop obesssively watching the news, it makes no difference to the outcome but I think many feel superior because they show obsessive concern.

Choccy21 · 26/02/2022 13:48

The Ukraine President is staying put and not leaving. That’s is leadership- I was actually expecting him to leave the city.
I wonder how many leaders would show that kind of bravery?

SleeplessK · 26/02/2022 14:06

I understand that you may have some concern and wonder if you have anxiety normally. It may be worth speaking to someone about anxiety issues and limiting the amount of exposure to news etc. Have a think about risk of injury etc from other daily activities in comparison to the risk of nuclear attacks to the UK this may help with some perspective. I hope that you begin to feel a little less anxious and can speak to someone who may help you develop some confidence and perspective.

StormzyinaTCup · 26/02/2022 14:15

Agree. Boris would have been long gone.

Most leaders would be long gone, can't see Macron or Biden being prepared to done army combats and wield a rifle on the frontline either.

Zelensky has my utmost respect at the moment.

StormzyinaTCup · 26/02/2022 14:18

don not done

RewildingAmbridge · 26/02/2022 14:23

Thing is Ukraine isn't exactly a military super power but they are holding well, Russian weaponry and training are old, if their money was diverted to the military rather than the oligarchs maybe we'd be in trouble, but it's not. If he steps foot into Europe or any NATO country the military response would be swift and unlike anything we've seen thus far. We are incredibly privileged to be tucked up on our little island, it's not you who should be terrified it's those experiencing the brunt of it.

Because at a guess many people prefer reality tv, or soaps, rather than learning history
Tigersonvaseline · 26/02/2022 15:51

Laurie but soldiers behaving badly isn't just limited to British soldiers.

Unfortunately it's everywhere.

One of the most shocking instances was highlighted in the Rachel Weiss film, the whistle blower.
She stumbled across UN soldiers running drugs And trafficking rings in Bosnia.

I think of the UN as good so this in particular shocked me.

Tigersonvaseline · 26/02/2022 15:53

Well in some ways if this president does die, a lot of hope goes with him so it's better he survives he's the figure head of the nation.
So after fighting if he does escape I don't blame him.
