What statement does a nose piercing make?

At 26, after wanting it for years and never having the guts, I have just had my nose pierced with a very small, thin silver hoop. I really love it!

But asked DH for his honest opinion and he says he isn't keen. It just got me thinking what kind of statement a nose piercing makes? As in what assumptions would you make about someone with a nose piercing/what kind of look it goes with?

You can be honest, it won't upset me!

I had mine done at 52 with a small gold stud. Something I always wanted to do. I guess I am biased but don't think it makes any kind of statement! My friends and work colleagues have only commented positively, I love the way it looks, but not sure it says anything 😊

JustWonderingIfYou · 28/01/2022 13:11

I don't think it'd make me make any assumptions about you, maybe that you are a bit try hard. I feel they are a little dated for my generation, very late 90s, early 00s. I see a lot of 15/16 year old with them again.

It's a bit wanting to make a statement/be different without actually doing anything big.

IncompleteSenten · 28/01/2022 13:12

It says 'I like nose piercings.'

HappyDays40 · 28/01/2022 13:12

My nose is pierced and I have a silver ring. I had had three successful job interviews. It just says you have a nose piercing

Stookeen · 28/01/2022 13:12

I don't think it makes any statement at all these days I have one, and I'm a 49-year-old academic who cycles everywhere and wears slouchy dark clothes (including some Cos I was on the 'Cos and Middle-Class Baggy Clothes' thread! Grin)

Getyourjinglebellsinarow · 28/01/2022 13:13

It says "I got my nose pierced."
I honestly don't think I'd think anything of it.

TheVolturi · 28/01/2022 13:14

I'd just think you're cool, and you're still so young! Enjoy!

RincewindsHat · 28/01/2022 13:16

@IncompleteSenten

It says 'I like nose piercings.'
This.
AlexaShutUp · 28/01/2022 13:16

In my dd's case, it asserts that she is proud of her heritage. I'm not sure that I would jump to any conclusions about what other people might want it to say about them.

galacticpixels · 28/01/2022 13:17

I'm 29 and have had my nose pierced (a stud) since I was 25. I love it. Most people don't even notice. Others compliment it.

My mum (62) and sister (25) both have nose piercings too. My mom got hers when she was 57 and it looks so nice on her!

housemaus · 28/01/2022 13:18

I don't think it's much of a statement, really. It depends on the rest of your look - if someone dresses a bit more alternative, it kind of adds to it, for example. But if you dress reasonably generically, I don't think it has a specific vibe to it.

I've had mine done 17 years and I forget it's there! Had plenty of professional interviews/events and nobody's ever said anything.

ShowOfHands · 28/01/2022 13:19

It does say you like nose piercings and nothing else.

Not sure what's try hard about it. Trying hard to look the way you want? Er, okay.

I don't have a nose piercing to signal anything to anybody. I just like the way it looks.

Calmgirl · 28/01/2022 13:20

I don't personally think it makes any bad statements. I pierced my own nose a few months ago just before I turned 50. I had been desperate to do it for years. However after a couple of months I decided that I had satisfied that urge and removed it and don't regret it. It's closed up and healed well. Mind you, I also had quite long hair and shaved it all off into a buzz cut so perhaps I was having a late midlife crisis! Grin

BusterGonad · 28/01/2022 13:20

I think it does make a statement tbh, maybe I'm just old fashioned in my views or honest, but I don't think it's really something you'd have in certain professions.

PrivateHall · 28/01/2022 13:20

I really like it, I bet you look great.

drpet49 · 28/01/2022 13:22

Personally I don’t like any facial piercings apart from ears

BarryTheKestrel · 28/01/2022 13:22

I have a nose and a lip piercing and have done for about 15 years now. My face looks naked without them to me, but my boss who sits opposite me and looks at me a lot each day, only noticed the other day after 5 months of working together.

People don't pay attention to incredibly small details on faces on the whole.

CounsellorTroi · 28/01/2022 13:23

The only thing I think about when I see a nose piercing is doesn’t it get infected/sore when you have a cold?

Mrstwiddle · 28/01/2022 13:23

I don’t like them but would just assume you were a bit alternative.

Deadringer · 28/01/2022 13:23

Years ago they were a bit edgy and quite cool, not sure about now. I like them, i think they look cute.

Tellthemagain · 28/01/2022 13:24

I wouldn't think anything of a stud. if it was a ring I'd think attention seeking / doesn't want to grow up. . if I'm honest.

UserBotAI999 · 28/01/2022 13:24

I dont care that much but i guess id slightly think you were trying too hard to look edgy.
Beauty is all about symmetry so doing anything asymmetrical to your face never improves it, but i realise that Not Trying To Look Conventionally Pretty could be the point.

OneTC · 28/01/2022 13:25

It is part of my OH culture and I see very many people wearing them. I don't really think most people are making a conscious statement with it at all

ClaudiaWankleman · 28/01/2022 13:25

I don't think it really says anything, although there are those who will say that people who do certain professions can't have piercings etc.

Those are the same gatekeepers who have kept representation of minority groups out of those professions for decades. I do see it changing slowly, although only at mid-level management so far. I don't think there are many senior management roles in financial services occupied by people who aren't white, and even fewer women who aren't white.

The attitude winds me up.

OverByYer · 28/01/2022 13:26

No statement. Years ago they were seen as being a bit alternative as were multiple ear piercings , but peircings and tattoos are so mainstream now I don't think anyone really notices/ has strong opinions either way.
