What statement does a nose piercing make?

HermioneGranger999 · 28/01/2022 13:07

At 26, after wanting it for years and never having the guts, I have just had my nose pierced with a very small, thin silver hoop. I really love it!

But asked DH for his honest opinion and he says he isn't keen. It just got me thinking what kind of statement a nose piercing makes? As in what assumptions would you make about someone with a nose piercing/what kind of look it goes with?

You can be honest, it won't upset me!

@Esspee

Oh you're a joker.

Livpool · 28/01/2022 14:56

"I like nose piercings"?!

Not sure they could 'say' anything else really

HelloFrostyMorning · 28/01/2022 15:01

I think they look lovely. I always wanted one but was in jobs in my 20s and 30s that 'forbid' them. Well, they were looked down on hugely anyway...

Then when I got to my mid 40s,I felt I was too old for it and people would judge me. I know daft. Now at late 50s, early to mid 40s seems young-ish.

Anyway, that said, I think anyone should have one at any age. It doesn't tell me anything @HermioneGranger999 except that person wanted a nose piercing.

I have both my ears pierced 5 times, and no-one has ever said anything.

ShowOfHands · 28/01/2022 15:02

@Esspee I'm really glad you assume people work rather than sitting around on benefits, letting other people pay for their facial ironmongery. I thought you were going for the holy trinity of Troll 101 - uneducated, altered AND not working - but you have limits. I like your style.

HelloFrostyMorning · 28/01/2022 15:02

@Esspee

I would assume that you also have tattoos and no qualifications so probably work in a cafe, call centre or car wash.
🤣 Yer mad you! Grin
DearlyBeloathed · 28/01/2022 15:03

I like them.

Megan Fox, who is my total woman crush, has one and looks just as beautiful.

Sceptre86 · 28/01/2022 15:04

It's a part of my culture but I'm not a fan. My sil has one and it suits her but I wouldn't get one.

HappyDays40 · 28/01/2022 15:10

@BusterGonad
What professions would you not have a nose piercing in?

Exhausteddog · 28/01/2022 15:11

That's why I took mine out during a particularly cold-infected winter in my 20s, but I had it redone a few years later, and it hasn't been an issue since -- perhaps I get far fewer colds now...?

I had mine done when I was 18. My mum hated it. I took it out when I had a cold and it healed up. Had it done again...and did the same thing. Now 20 years later I'm quite keen to have done again.
I work in a creative industry and I doubt anyone would notice or think twice about it. I asked my 15 year old what she thought and she said "'I'd prefer you got your nose pierced than had a side fringe" Confused I have been contemplating both but it's certainly not an either/or thing!Grin

Alwayswonderedwhy · 28/01/2022 15:13

I don't think it makes any statement. I've had various piercings over the years including 3 in my nose. I had them because I like them.

I think some if the comments about it being attention seeking or trying to be edgy are strange.

CovidCorvid · 28/01/2022 15:14

You'd be right with the first point but I'm a senior academic with multiple degrees and published articles. Grin
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 28/01/2022 15:16

It isn't the 1950's it's fine as long as it's not a bull ring for work.
I'm 60 and have one. i think its attractive.

afaloren · 28/01/2022 15:17

I have one and I love it. It’s never held me back from doing anything, getting jobs etc, and I plan to still be rocking it when I’m old and grey Smile

MsMeNz · 28/01/2022 15:17

i dont think it looks try hard at all, if anything i look at older women who have them - as good for you :)

I have a few secret pericings as I work in a very, very corperate enviroement wear blue hair and any face peicings wouldnt go down at all. So my secret pericings are like my little nod to my rebillious side. So when I see older people with cute little nose pericings I think it looks nice and its just there metaphorical little tiny finger up to "the man"

WonderfulYou · 28/01/2022 15:18

I think nose piercings are just as normal as ear piercings.

If anyone has an opinion on your nose piercing, it says a lot more about them and their insecurities than it does about you.

MasterBeth · 28/01/2022 15:18

“I have had my nose pierced.”

itwasntaparty · 28/01/2022 15:20

It doesn't 🤷‍♀️

BrightYellowDaffodil · 28/01/2022 15:20

Mine says "I like having a nose ring". I used to have a stud but it kept falling out, and tightening it up just meant it sank into my nose until it looked like a blackhead. Which was not quite the look I preferred.

If having a nose ring brings out the judgy brigade like @Esspee who think that we all have tattoos (well, I do, as it happens) and must only work in menial jobs (as opposed to being fairly senior in a professional role in the City...) then all the better. We then know the ghastly types to avoid Grin

HerbErtlinger · 28/01/2022 15:21

I've had one for the last 20 years, it's a flat heart shaped stud, I don't think many people notice it to be honest

Rollercoaster1920 · 28/01/2022 15:26

It says you aren't scared of needles (or peircing guns)!

A lot of my generation had them and now don't, but I still see the little scars which makes me laugh in a good way about happy memories of youth!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 28/01/2022 15:27

@LakesandSnow I can't speak for others but I blow my nose in the same way as I did pre-piercing. I don't spout snot like a whale blowing water out of its blow hole!

@Pinkypie86 It stung more than hurt - always go somewhere that uses needles and not ear-piercing guns. The piercing going in often hits the central part of your nose which doesn't half make your eyes water, but that's about it. My nose was slightly puffy the next day and that was it really. Very easy to clean - just squirted it with saline solution and wriggled the stud about (buy the stuff designed for contact lenses, it comes in a squirty bottle) and I found it healed far more quickly than any of my other piercings. I think I stopped with the saline after about a week (which I'm sure is less time than you're supposed to do it for, but it had pretty much healed by then).

Cas112 · 28/01/2022 15:34

I have never assumed anything of anyone with a nose piercing

KurtWilde · 28/01/2022 15:36

Ok, I'll bite. Yea, I have many tattoos, but I also have a couple of degrees, published books, and you might even have read and enjoyed some of my content online because I'm a freelance writer.

I did used to work in a cafe, but I had neither tattoos of piercings then Smile

Also.. there's nothing at all wrong with working any of those jobs btw.

AryaStarkWolf · 28/01/2022 15:38

@IncompleteSenten

It says 'I like nose piercings.'

RobotValkyrie · 28/01/2022 15:41

At a gut level, I hate them because it reminds me of how badly my ears react (really inflamed) if I try to put earrings in them.
I might be a bit jealous too.

At a personal level, I'd think "this person may not be entirely conventional", which I think is a mostly a good thing. E.g. you're less likely to be judgmental, more likely to have interesting hobbies, and more likely to tolerate my own quirks, perhaps.
But I may also be on the lookout for "red flags", e.g. obsessed with your own appearance, or excessively unconventional (doing drugs?)

In other words: it will make you stand out, and might generate mixed feelings.
But mostly I think it will make you look cool and artsy. A bit like unconventional hair colour (blue, green, pink, etc.)
