What statement does a nose piercing make?

HermioneGranger999 · 28/01/2022 13:07

At 26, after wanting it for years and never having the guts, I have just had my nose pierced with a very small, thin silver hoop. I really love it!

But asked DH for his honest opinion and he says he isn't keen. It just got me thinking what kind of statement a nose piercing makes? As in what assumptions would you make about someone with a nose piercing/what kind of look it goes with?

You can be honest, it won't upset me!

If you look indian/pakistani/bangladeshi I'll think that it's part of your heritage. If you don't I'll think that your a bit of a hippy/boho type person who's probably into stuff like yoga and meditation.

Nothing negative at least. I'm 42 if that helps.

5128gap · 28/01/2022 14:17

I like them a lot, and think they're pretty uncontroversial these days. The only people with strong negative opinions are probably ones who you wouldn't really be bothered about not liking it. No doubt you'd have a very different style and outlook to them, and you probably wouldn't want to look like them either.

Ispini · 28/01/2022 14:18

My 14 yr old DD had hers done a few months ago and wants another ear piercing done this weekend, so is trying to convince me to go with her and have my nose done (again, I had it done years ago and it became infected!).
I am so sorely tempted....

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 28/01/2022 14:20

although there are those who will say that people who do certain professions can't have piercings etc.
There surely can't be many of these left? The judge who heard my divorce in 2006 had a nose piercing.

ofwarren · 28/01/2022 14:21

I wouldn't think anything of it.
I had it done but it wouldn't heal. My mum is 62 and has hers done.

IlIlI · 28/01/2022 14:24

I think overall look makes a statement rather than just the nose piercing alone. I don't think it makes a huge statement on it's own other than it's something you thought looked nice and wanted.

Sparklingbrook · 28/01/2022 14:24

I don’t think anything. So many people have them now.
The only thing I think when there’s a nose stud it looks from a distance at least like a big spot.

Thatsplentyjack · 28/01/2022 14:24

I got mine done when I was about 17. Took it out when I had my second baby because I thought I needed to look more "grown up". At 29 I thought fuck it, and ordered myself a little silver hoop and I've been wearing it since. I did worry at first that people might be put off using my business but so far it's been fine.

Glowtastic · 28/01/2022 14:25

I have a noise piercing, done at 21 I'm 47 now. Always had a ring or a stud in it, never stopped me from getting jobs right up to a fairly senior level. I teach on healthcare courses at university and we're not bothered if students have them, I don't think the majority of the NHS is either. Very standard these days!

ufucoffee · 28/01/2022 14:25

I think they say 'i think I'm so cool'

KurtWilde · 28/01/2022 14:26

Nothing more than 'I like how this looks'

ABitOfAShitShow · 28/01/2022 14:29

Absolutely none. Just that you like it. And maybe that you're happy enough with your nose to draw attention to it. Grin

(Obviously, I understand that it's a cultural thing for some people but I wouldn't feel the need to make a judgement on the reasons for it, personally.)

Life's short - adorn your body as you wish.

I hope they do. The more women who go around thinking they're cool the better.

Agree with this. There’s nothing statement about a few piercings these days. I have had all sorts in my ears now down to just lobes and one rook. Not trying to be young, cool or edgy. Couldn’t give a rat’s what anyone thinks. I like them so I have them.
2DogsOnMySofa · 28/01/2022 14:33

I had mine done at 46, my dh loves it, Dad hates it.

I don't think it says anything about you now, fairly common place these days.

My work contract states no Facial piercings, however I've never been spoken to about it

the80sweregreat · 28/01/2022 14:34

I personally don't like them or tattoos, but on other people it's really nothing to do with me at all and my sons and Dh have tattoos , they know my views on them!
I think that nose rings look a bit painful to be honest , but not as painful as a tongue one must be to have done.
I'm glad you like your one op

CheshireChat · 28/01/2022 14:34

Hah, I actually looked at getting one today Grin I'd really like one.

Gnomechomsky · 28/01/2022 14:35

I had mine done at 16 and I'm now 54, I forget its there TBH.
I don't think it says anything but then I don't really think it ever has.
Never had an issue with interviews etc and I'm in a high level professional job.
People will always find something to judge you on.

mewkins · 28/01/2022 14:36

@ShowOfHands

It doesn't hurt much to have it done, just a pinch though it might make your eye water on that side.

People really don't notice them. I've had friends and colleagues suddenly notice after years and ask if it's new and my own mother didn't notice for 2 years. Sure plenty of people won't like it and will stay quiet but genuinely, people don't realise a lot of the time.

Doesn't really matter if a minority don't like it. I don't like the way most make up looks or false eyelashes for example but it's not my body.

And you blow your nose in the same way as anybody else!

I agree. No one notices! I've had mine for more than 20 years and when I had it done my dad didn't notice and someone I worked with thought I'd always had it.

I think it used to be a bit of a statement. I may have been saying I was 'a bit alternative' or that I liked alternative music perhaps. Nowadays lots of people of all ages have it. I like that tattoos and piercings are becoming normalised. I like self-expression.

Esspee · 28/01/2022 14:38

I would assume that you also have tattoos and no qualifications so probably work in a cafe, call centre or car wash.

PraiseTheSunshine · 28/01/2022 14:39

I had my nose pierced when I was about 16 and then took it out a few years ago because I'd kind of changed my style over the years and didn't feel like it really suited me anymore. I still really like nose piercings though, especially with delicate/subtle jewellery. I probably wouldn't give it a second thought if I saw someone with their nose pierced so can't say it makes any particular statement to me :) I'm sure it looks lovely on you.

PraiseTheSunshine · 28/01/2022 14:41

I agree Grin

KurtWilde · 28/01/2022 14:43

@the80sweregreat tongue piercing doesn't hurt at all. It's a bit swollen and uncomfortable for a few days or so afterwards, that's about it.
