What statement does a nose piercing make?

HermioneGranger999 · 28/01/2022 13:07

At 26, after wanting it for years and never having the guts, I have just had my nose pierced with a very small, thin silver hoop. I really love it!

But asked DH for his honest opinion and he says he isn't keen. It just got me thinking what kind of statement a nose piercing makes? As in what assumptions would you make about someone with a nose piercing/what kind of look it goes with?

You can be honest, it won't upset me!

A nose piercing doesn’t really make a statement to me TBH. All it tells me about a person is that they like nose piercings.

I’m sorry, but I’m with your husband. I just find any kind of facial piercing unattractive (except for ears). I wouldn’t judge anyone for having them though. They just don’t appeal to me.

LakesandSnow · 28/01/2022 13:28

Can't say I'm a fan, and I've always wondered how people blow their nose?! Plus the girl who got one in my class at school (mid nineties) seemed to fiddle with it a LOT. It just looked like she was picking her nose?!

FredBair · 28/01/2022 13:28

Does it matter to you what people think? I'd say they are like tattoos.
You'll get a range from people who have piercings and obv like them, those who are indifferent and those who hate them

Personally I dislike tattoos and piercings, they make me squirm. I would never say that to anyone though as it would be rude.

@CounsellorTroi

The only thing I think about when I see a nose piercing is doesn’t it get infected/sore when you have a cold?
That's why I took mine out during a particularly cold-infected winter in my 20s, but I had it redone a few years later, and it hasn't been an issue since -- perhaps I get far fewer colds now...?
Stookeen · 28/01/2022 13:31

@ClaudiaWankleman

I don't think it really says anything, although there are those who will say that people who do certain professions can't have piercings etc.

Those are the same gatekeepers who have kept representation of minority groups out of those professions for decades. I do see it changing slowly, although only at mid-level management so far. I don't think there are many senior management roles in financial services occupied by people who aren't white, and even fewer women who aren't white.

The attitude winds me up.

Exactly. It's the 'You can't be a QC with an Afro' brigade. As if it were the Afro that was the issue.
Hightemp · 28/01/2022 13:31

I quite like a tiny stud nose piercing. Anything more obvious and not so keen.Likewise with tattoos!

Avarua · 28/01/2022 13:34

I had a nose stud once (in the 90s) and it had a small white stone in it. Someone pointed out to me that it looked like a big zit. Dammit, not the look I was going for.

OP, do what you want. Other people's opinions are just that, opinions. Your opinion is the only one that matters.

SeasonFinale · 28/01/2022 13:34

Nowadays no statement as it is quite normalised.

RandomLondoner · 28/01/2022 13:35

Personally I don’t like any facial piercings apart from ears

I don't like piercings anywhere, not even ears.

Helpwiththisplz · 28/01/2022 13:36

None. It’s a very common piercing (second to ears I believe) and is sometimes cultural.

merryhouse · 28/01/2022 13:37

@galacticpixels

I'm 29 and have had my nose pierced (a stud) since I was 25. I love it. Most people don't even notice. Others compliment it.

My mum (62) and sister (25) both have nose piercings too. My mom got hers when she was 57 and it looks so nice on her!

The ones who aren't complimenting it have noticed. They're just very polite.
HikingforScenery · 28/01/2022 13:43

I’d love one! That surprises me because I don’t like piercings and tattoos but I think they look cute.

Pinkypie86 · 28/01/2022 13:47

Completely missing the point of thread. I'm 36 and I rellyeant it doing.. did it hurt, easy to take care of, take long to heal?? Sorry. I love them. Don't think about anyone's piercings or tattoos.

RampantIvy · 28/01/2022 13:50

That would be me. I wouldn't say to someone that their piercing spoiled their face, although I would think it. I would say nothing. I just don't find them attractive in any way.

steff13 · 28/01/2022 13:53

@IncompleteSenten

It says 'I like nose piercings.'
Yes, exactly this. It's literally the only thing I've ever thought about someone with a piercing of any kind.
Goldandguns · 28/01/2022 13:57

I've had mine since I was 16 - I used to wear studs then moved onto gold nose rings once I'd finished school. Culturally it's common for us, particularly gold, but I just had mine done because I really like it and I like to pretend it makes my nose look a little smaller Grin At this point it's just a part of me, I definitely don't bother swapping it out for interviews or anything like that.

ShowOfHands · 28/01/2022 14:04

It doesn't hurt much to have it done, just a pinch though it might make your eye water on that side.

People really don't notice them. I've had friends and colleagues suddenly notice after years and ask if it's new and my own mother didn't notice for 2 years. Sure plenty of people won't like it and will stay quiet but genuinely, people don't realise a lot of the time.

Doesn't really matter if a minority don't like it. I don't like the way most make up looks or false eyelashes for example but it's not my body.

And you blow your nose in the same way as anybody else!

Sally872 · 28/01/2022 14:06

I like them. Don't feel like it would suit me but I do like them.

If I ask my dh opinion on anything slightly trendy or not very ordinary he doesn't like it much. I don't ask anymore, problem solved Grin

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 28/01/2022 14:06

I don't like them, but then - it's your nose, not mine. Smile

babyjellyfish · 28/01/2022 14:07

This.

@CounsellorTroi

Why would it get infected? It’s not an open wound it’s healed after a few weeks. It literally makes no difference when i have a cold.

I don’t think it says one thing, so many people have them, from very alt people to very conservative people these days.
I’ve had mine about 25 years now it’s just part of my face and i don’t feel like I look right without it.

FindingMeno · 28/01/2022 14:12

Makes no more of a statement nowadays than earlobe piercings.

TheOriginalEmu · 28/01/2022 14:13

@Pinkypie86

It wasn’t painful, stung and pinchy more than pain. I would recommend finding a piercer who uses a needle rather than a gun. It’s really easy to take care of, they can develop a little bump next to the piercing that almost always goes away by keeping it clean, (it happens less with a needle as it’s less skin trauma), go for it!
Wobblysausage · 28/01/2022 14:13

I think they look good! Regardless of age! Stuff what other people think! On other people I prefer rings to studs but I don’t think they suit me so I wear studs.

I had mine done at 11 so I’m used to mine and don’t really give it much thought but 21 years later I’ve had my other nostril done and I love them, I couldn’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 28/01/2022 14:14

It's not really very controversial these days, piercings are in at the moment with the whole 'curated ear' thing. Back when I was a teen stuffy middle aged men used to like making comments about taking livestock to market O_o.

I never thought they were cool because my Grandma had one, fuck off massive ruby in it too :P At least they actually last unlike my eyebrow which grew out twice and has left me with a scar!
