What statement does a nose piercing make?

HermioneGranger999 · 28/01/2022 13:07

At 26, after wanting it for years and never having the guts, I have just had my nose pierced with a very small, thin silver hoop. I really love it!

But asked DH for his honest opinion and he says he isn't keen. It just got me thinking what kind of statement a nose piercing makes? As in what assumptions would you make about someone with a nose piercing/what kind of look it goes with?

You can be honest, it won't upset me!

@LondonQueen calling people 'chavs' because they wear something that isn't to your taste or for any other reason is offensive. Does that help a bit more?

If you didn't know that you're not in my part of London, clearly.

caringcarer · 30/01/2022 00:26

I am probably being judgy but I think they look aggressive, especially if lots of piercings and tattoos.

Autumnalblooms · 30/01/2022 00:46

51 and recently had mine pierced .I also have my eyebrow pierced and a cartilage piercing. I wear Dm's and dye my hair a non natural colour. I don't give two hoots what other's think .My teens actually quite like it as they have the cool mum 🤣.My employer is happy .Oh and I have tattoos too .

Autumnalblooms · 30/01/2022 00:49

@Esspee

I would assume that you also have tattoos and no qualifications so probably work in a cafe, call centre or car wash.
Actually I am doing a degree in my job around working full time a job which I have done very for 30 yrs at one point at lower management level so .....
ColdToTheBones · 30/01/2022 05:45

@NotebookAddict

I was brought up to see nose-piercings as a choice made by working-class and rebellious young people. I still think of them that way, but I would be the first to defend your right to choose how you look.

I completely agree that it doesnt give a poor reflection of the person wearing it, however I personally hate the way they look, (particularly brows and lips eugh). I find it difficult to talk to someone with the added distraction. I cant help how I feel but obviously its your own body to do with what you wish. The OP asked our opinion.

SaintVal · 30/01/2022 09:26

I like nose piercings as much as I like ear piercings. I particularly like the little nose sleeper rings or a small diamond stud. I don't think it makes a statement as it's fairly common these days. I wouldn't have one though as cartilage piercings on my ears in the past have never healed properly and I have rhinitis so constantly blowing my nose!

You be careful I don't run you over in my wheelchair 😂
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 30/01/2022 09:55

Bless you @LondonQueen. Maybe when you go to school tomorrow ask a teacher of calling someone a chav is offensive. They'll put you straight

KurtWilde · 30/01/2022 09:56

So much judgement, so many inaccurate, stereotypical, outdated assumptions. I swear to Christ some of you never moved on from the last century.

Handholding587 · 30/01/2022 10:00

I think they look rather like a rebellious teenage thing, but then I'm old.

This! I can't belive these type of views are still hanging around. I have multiple piercings in my ears, nose ring, tongue pierced and one tattoo. I've bad them since I was a teenager and am now a senior manager in finance. Obviously did my career no harm and obviously don't work in a call centre or car wash or wherever else it was a pp said. Literally.

Have you spoken to your GP about your attention span? It must make talking to anyone in a hat/wearing make up/with a birthmark etc quite taxing.

Craftycorvid · 30/01/2022 12:34

Really interesting thread! I have a nose piercing and a tattoo (quite a large piece but not obvious due to where it is). I’m in my 50s, about as aggressive as a blancmange and with several degrees and professional qualifications. I just really love good body art and think if you love the look of something you’ll probably look good with it because you feel good.

TrickyD · 30/01/2022 12:54

Those ones which look like jewels stuck on the ouside of nostrils, are not too bad.
Those circular ones which are in the end of the nostril, like rings in pigs' noses, are horrendous and I don't believe those claiming to be doctors or lawyers are likely to have them , though a 'senior person in finance' (aka bookkeeper) might.

DearlyBeloathed · 30/01/2022 13:11

Nothing I said was offensive. HTH

So calling people chavs isn't rude and offensive?

Why can't you explain how it makes someone a 'chav'?

It appears some kind of oracle has spoken.

daisyjgrey · 30/01/2022 13:24

@rainbowandglitter Please see the above "(aka bookkeeper)" for your amusement on this joyous day.

TrickyD · 30/01/2022 13:28

It appears some kind of oracle has spoken.

She asked for people's assumptions and I gave mine.
So what's your problem, daisygrey?

SocksAndTheCity · 30/01/2022 13:45

Maybe it was the lack of 'I think' or 'in my opinion', since that suggests you believe your statement to be fact rather than just a judgemental expression of your own prejudices.

Or maybe it's the suggestion that posters are lying about their occupations, which tends to make intelligent, hardworking, successful people bristle a bit, since it comes over as sneering, patronising and rude.

Perhaps it's even the comparison to farm animals - given nobody's eyesight is so bad they can't tell the difference, there's really no logical reason for that all unless they're really, phenomenally stupid?

Who knows?

daisyjgrey · 30/01/2022 13:49

@TrickyD "Horrendous", "pigs noses", "I don't believe those claiming to be doctors" and finally "(aka bookkeeper)" is not you sharing an opinion, it's being intentionally unpleasant.

Curiously, the people claiming that they don't like people with pierced noses etc have exhibited much worse behaviours than the people they claim to be "rough/chavs/common".

awesomekilick · 30/01/2022 13:49

Common. As in ordinary, lacking novelty, no individuality.

Marvellousmadness · 30/01/2022 13:52

Bit trashy imo or a bit 90s (boy I'm old)
But I like the septum piercing. That i find edgy/slightly cool. Don't ask me why haha

Absolutely. As a heavily tattooed person, the people who judge me negatively because of that are usually not very nice people in my experience. Decent people judge others based on personality, not appearance.
