What statement does a nose piercing make?

At 26, after wanting it for years and never having the guts, I have just had my nose pierced with a very small, thin silver hoop. I really love it!

But asked DH for his honest opinion and he says he isn't keen. It just got me thinking what kind of statement a nose piercing makes? As in what assumptions would you make about someone with a nose piercing/what kind of look it goes with?

You can be honest, it won't upset me!

@Marvellousmadness

Bit trashy imo or a bit 90s (boy I'm old) But I like the septum piercing. That i find edgy/slightly cool. Don't ask me why haha
Wow trashy. Can you explain what you mean by that?

@Craftycorvid sorry I quoted the wrong post!!! I'll ask for it to be removed!

@TheVanguardSix

I think they're so beautiful. I'd love to get a nose piercing but I don't know, at 50... who knows? I love piercings in general.
Do it. My cousin got one at 50 and it’s beautiful on her.

And for the judgmental pricks on this thread, she is a solicitor with 24 years practice under her belt. But it wouldn’t matter if it were one of the jobs mentioned in a derogatory way, would it? She’s happy with it and couldn’t give a shit what anyone thinks.

It’s a little bit like people saying it’s not appropriate to have tattoos in medicine. Please make sure that your next of kin is aware that if a tattoos medical professional tries to save your life, you’re not interested and would prefer an early death. Hmm
@rainbowandglitter Please see the above "(aka bookkeeper)" for your amusement on this joyous day.
Wow. I can assure you I'm not a bookkeeper. Not sure what anyone's job has to do with a nose piercing anyway. Just bizarre. Thanks for bringing it to my attention @daisyjgrey Grin

@daisyjgrey

I find it difficult to talk to someone with the added distraction.

Have you spoken to your GP about your attention span? It must make talking to anyone in a hat/wearing make up/with a birthmark etc quite taxing.

Ha ha, very sarcy, 10 out of 10 Grin

Big Blackhead. Hayuge.

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 30/01/2022 23:39

Im loving how the Op has asked for posters opinions but not come back......

JohnKettleyIsAWeatherMan · 30/01/2022 23:58

Had mine done at 32, still got it at 54, no plans to remove it. Could not give a shiny shit what anyone thinks about that.

forcedfun · 31/01/2022 08:49

Surprised by comments stating it is a problem for professionals. I lead a big team of talented professionals and judge them by their abilities not their appearance. Some have tattoos and piercings, some don't. Doesn't make any difference to the quality of work they produce. Similarly my team is very diverse in terms of cultural/religious background. You are missing out on some of the best if you are filtering based on appearance /cultural similarity

WalkingOnTheCracks · 31/01/2022 09:41

@Esspee

I would assume that you also have tattoos and no qualifications so probably work in a cafe, call centre or car wash.
Would you like to know what this assumption makes me assume about you?
housemaus · 31/01/2022 12:54

@LaurieFairyCake

That you're a 'whooo-er'

According to my Scottish granny

See also: any piercing - even ears, eating in the street, going out with hair not your natural colour, shaving your legs, not wearing a hat, not wearing tights, driving, buying a drink yourself in the pub, drinking pints, not carrying an umbrella (it implied you would go into anyones house to keep dry Grin)

I'll stop there but there was HUNDREDS Grin

Oh my goodness she would have thought me an absolute trollop hahahaha... god love a judgemental Scottish granny!

Mine thought my nose piercing made me look like a 'harlot' too. Until she got dementia, and then she used to just side eye it and go "What's that? Does it hurt?" suspiciously Grin.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 31/01/2022 12:56

Genius. I'm going to use that as a ruse to wangle my way into handsome men's homes!

How can people have lived to adulthood yet met so few people, or experienced so little diversity, that they believe a nose ring to be such a big deal, and an indicator of character and intelligence? Even if you have had the misfortune to have lived such a small life such things are alien to you; surely even some one with the meanest intellect must understand the lack of correlation here?

BusterGonad · 31/01/2022 13:47

I don't think many are comparing having a nose ring to the level of intelligence, it's just that certain jobs have dress codes, I wouldn't expect a judge to have tattoos and nose ring and I would also be surprised if Prince William got a nose ring. Certain roles have dress criteria, especially where money and clients are concerned. Everyone is judged on their appearance, and those disputing it are not being totally honest with themselves. We all make judgments and first impressions.

Facial piercings on men are still very much an “alternative” look - so I agree that no, I wouldn’t expect the average professional man to have one. But a discreet nose stud on a woman really isn’t that unusual at all. A number of my colleagues (solicitors and economists, so pretty “ordinary” and professional) have one, and they’re commonplace among women from quite traditional south Asian backgrounds and don’t usually attract a second glance in the workplace.

Tattoos on judges - no, probably not, considering most judges are from the older generation where tattoos were generally less the norm. On younger professional people you surely wouldn’t be able to tell whether or not they had a tattoo in a place covered by clothing. Relatively few people even nowadays have visible hand or face tattoos.

Thirtytimesround · 31/01/2022 14:27

My assumption would be you were

 1. From India/Pakiatan etc where I think it’s an engagement thing, or if you obviously weren’t then:
 2. Trying a bit hard to be alternative/cool in a rather teenage way. Sorry!

Not trying very hard at all really is it. I had it done so long ago I forget it's there. Do you feel the same about pierced ears? If not, why not?
Giggorata · 31/01/2022 14:52

Surely the days when a nose ring was considered to be edgy or cool or rebellious or trashy are long gone?
I first saw a nose ring on a someone who wasn't of South Asian culture about 50 years ago. Wow, I thought it was edgy then, and decided I'd have one sometime.
I did.
I also got highly educated and had a professional career, including working in the court system. No issues.

Similar views have been held about pierced ears, short hair on women, long hair on men, wearing make up, variously not wearing a hat, tie or gloves, women in trousers, etc, etc, by certain kinds of conservative people over the years. They all gradually became mainstream.
