Driving the wrong way down a one way street? (Diagram)

NC for this as I'm embarrassed if I'm driving the wrong way down a one way street every day.

The attached road sign is what the angry drivers see when I am coming the other way. They wind their windows down and yell at me that it's a one way street. This happens most days.

I think the sign means they need to turn left at the top of the street and the street itself isn't one way.

There isn't a no entry ⛔️ sign when I drive from my house and down this street.

AIBU to drive this way? I've been shouted and sworn at so many times I'm starting to think the sign must mean the street is one way.

Diagram also attached.

You are correct. What are the signs at the entry to the street (from their pov)

I'm confused!

dementedpixie · 26/01/2022 16:28

At the bit of the road that you start driving down what white lines are there? If there is a single white line on your side then you can drive along it. If its double white lines then both sides of the road are one way.

Can you screenshot from Google maps?

Puffflashpuffflashbang · 26/01/2022 16:28

I'm also confused - I can't work it out from
The diagram

SamphiretheStickerist · 26/01/2022 16:28

Is that another house in the middle?

Are there a white lines down the middle of the road you drive down?

Is there a give way set of lines at the bottom of the road you drive down?

I drive round a new estate that loks like that and the far end has a short row of houses in teh middle that act like a roundabout. The road goes round them one way, but the 2 roads out are 2-way - as your diagramme seems to show.

It is unnerving on the way out though. I too have ben shouted at - and I am positive the road is 2-way because of the lack of a no entry sign, plus there are two distinct lanes and give way signs at the end.

gobbledygoook · 26/01/2022 16:28

I think you'd need to show photos of the actual road or something for this for it to make sense!

Do you turn onto the road from your house, or is your house just part way down the street? Are there any other indications it's one way?

If you're being told it's one way multiple times / sworn at etc then you might need to get onto the council for extra signage either way!

OneWayDriver · 26/01/2022 16:29

They will have come from a mini roundabout but they won't see the roundabout sign as it's behind them. When they turn up the street the only sign they see is the one in my OP.

Or maybe I'm talking rubbish
Does it mean the road they are turning onto is one way on the left?

OneWayDriver · 26/01/2022 16:30

Ok I have to do a quick Teams call but will go and take pictures of the road afterwards

gobbledygoook · 26/01/2022 16:31

Weirdly your diagram would make me think this is the way it should be, so perhaps one way?

I'm unsure! There should either be give way lines / signs saying one way etc or something to clearly indicate - you can't be the only person with this problem!

Then you are right. If there is a sign for cars travelling in the direction you are going then you are supposed to be travelling in that direction. They aren't reading the road paint... they need to brush up on their hHighway Code.

Seeline · 26/01/2022 16:32

When you drive that way, what happens when you come to a junction? Are there give way markings on the road?

Dozycuntlaters · 26/01/2022 16:33

A couple of easy ways to tell:-

How are the cars parked on that street? Are they all facing one direction or are they facing both, if facing both ways a good indication that it is not one way.

also, at the end of the road, are there give way symbols on both sides of the road, if so then it is one way. Looking at that sign it seems that the left turn is one way rather than the road you are driving on.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 26/01/2022 16:33

@dementedpixie

The sign means that they are turning into a one way road and they must turn left into it as that's the (one) way. That sign doesn't indicate anything about the road they are in - which may or may not be one way.
UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 26/01/2022 16:36

Can you do a street view screenshot of the street entrance?

Plexie · 26/01/2022 16:50

I think it is a one way street.

There are two separate signs: one telling you it's one way, and the other telling you to turn left at the end. It's not warning you that the road becomes one way when you reach the left turn.

Is there a No Entry sign at the entrance to the road in the top right hand corner of your diagram?

LookItsMeAgain · 26/01/2022 16:52

Are there two lanes on this street?
How is there sufficient space for there to be two vehicles passing each other on the street?
I don't quite follow your hand-drawn diagram so I'm not sure how the angry driver shouting at you is getting onto that road to begin with. Have you checked to see what signage is at the other end of that road? Is there a no-entry sign there? Are there lines painted across the road saying No Entry or just one solid and one broken line (depending on where the broken line is, it'll determine which way the no entry should be adhered to).

dementedpixie · 26/01/2022 16:54

She already said there isn't a no entry sign. Why would there be 2 lanes if the road at the end is one way? There would be nowhere for the car in the right hand lane to go as they couldn't turn right at the end

LookItsMeAgain · 26/01/2022 16:56

Have you seen the diagram that the OP drew? There are two cars side by side?? Two lanes??? What is difficult to understand about that??? We're only seeing a tiny section of what the OP wants to show us. I'll back out of this as I've clearly met the angry driver you so nicely drew on your diagram @OneWayDriver! Grin
Tomnooktoldmeto · 26/01/2022 16:57

I agree with@daimbarsatemydogsbone, I park on a road just before a sign like this every day where anther road joins it

There is no No entry sign to stop people turning the wrong way just the sign indicating it is a one way road

I’ve pipped well over 20 people who are clearly unfamiliar with the road as they turn the wrong way failing to notice the one way sign often preventing a crash as it’s a nasty blind road that people drive too fast on

Try having a look on a street map or sat nav as they should show the traffic flow direction

OneWayDriver · 26/01/2022 17:06

Ok this is the view of the road from the direction of my house (the way I drive along it)

@LookItsMeAgain why are you shouting at me?
I wasn't replying to you anyway

dementedpixie · 26/01/2022 17:08

Are there road markings anywhere?
Doesn't look like 2 lanes of traffic

SamphiretheStickerist · 26/01/2022 17:08

Are there give way signs at the far end?

etaussi · 26/01/2022 17:08

What's the end of the road like when you get there?

Even if you ever accidentally drive the wrong way down a one way street (pulling out of a house for example) it normally becomes really obvious when you get to the junction or point the one way system started
