Driving the wrong way down a one way street? (Diagram)

NC for this as I'm embarrassed if I'm driving the wrong way down a one way street every day.

The attached road sign is what the angry drivers see when I am coming the other way. They wind their windows down and yell at me that it's a one way street. This happens most days.

I think the sign means they need to turn left at the top of the street and the street itself isn't one way.

There isn't a no entry ⛔️ sign when I drive from my house and down this street.

AIBU to drive this way? I've been shouted and sworn at so many times I'm starting to think the sign must mean the street is one way.

Diagram also attached.

Hello Neighbour!!!

@knittingaddict

I got abuse from a driver for going in the bus lane when the bus lane wasn't operating. The unfairness of it rankled all day. People should really learn how to read road signs properly.
Bet the blooming *** didn’t know you could fail driving tests for NOT going in bus lanes out of operational hours!

So many people don’t know and just avoid them altogether…

i've just written to the neighbouring local authority about their poor signage (part of a hastily installed low traffic neighbourhood) that I cycle along daily.

it is a one way street for motor vehicles that connects two main roads. Oft used as a rat run by minicab drivers.

Uortunately it is now only only passable at certain times of day. The rest of the time it is space for people with tables/ chairs/ street food etc.

Sadly there is no signage to warn drivers of this until they are 30m down the one way street. I have nearly been demolished on my bike twice in a week by drivers (one in a massive Iceland lorry) trying to do a multipoint turn to drive back along the one way street (the wrong way) to the exit where there is only a cycle phase on the traffic lights.

It is SO dangerous for cyclists.

About a mile along the same road they have done exactly the same. If drivers miss the first no entry sign (which isn't very clear) then there are no others so they gleefully drive along the cycle path wondering why there are flower pots in the way...

I'm afraid I did yell at the woman doing that in a hire car while on her phone. But I did then help her to extricate herself so she could start driving the correct way round the one way system.

i then uploaded bike cam footage of her on her phone to the Met...

longtompot · 26/01/2022 22:26

I would have thought you wouldn't actually see this sign if you were driving down it the wrong way? So on that basis I would say it isn't one way and you are in fact correct in using it how you are.
I would get onto your local council to get it sorted, even just two way arrows painted on the road would help things I should imagine.

I get horned turning left out of a two way street by the people turning right from the road opposite (crossroads) so people can regularly misunderstand road rules and tell you loudly you're wrong! But I've looked at your evidence and I can see you're right.

ChickenFajitas22 · 26/01/2022 22:44

@daimbarsatemydogsbone
I have signed in especially to say that i think that looks like Brighton (and Hove) and then saw your post.
OP we have loads of roads like that down here and that is definitely a 2 way street. Absolutely nothing to indicate otherwise.
The arrow and one way sign basically just means, when you get to the top, it's a left turn only as that road is one way only.

SidekickSally · 26/01/2022 22:46

Usually a one way street has the rectangle blue sign with a white arrow on the actual street. The street has nothing confirming that it is one way.
So I think OP is right that it is 2-way.
Love that fact that some people think narrow street means one way!
OP, paint a big placard and put it up in the road “this is a 2-way street, read your Highway Code”

Gladioli23 · 26/01/2022 22:47

I'm pretty confident it's not one way: firstly if you go out and round the square to the bit where you'd get to the car park there's a no entry sign making it clear that you can't go up that street - given that that's there, we can infer that this street (a hundred or so feet away without a similar marking) is two way.

In addition, if you go back out towards the mini roundabout on the road before you get to the square there's a roundabout sign clearly facing the direction you'd get to the roundabout if you went the "wrong" way down this in-fact-two-waybstreet, and then turned left towards the roundabout. That end of the street also doesn't have a one way sign on it.

FurbleSocks · 26/01/2022 22:56

Google Earth confirms cars are parked in both directions so you are right OP!

All that proves is that cars are parked in both directions.

Somebody else could have made the same has made the same mistake, or not.

Reflection in the car from Google earth also shows that even the Google Street view vehicle is driving down the road in the same direction as you do OP.
Pretty sure they'd know 😁

Im in two minds but i wouldnt rely on goggle maps

i regualry do a route and a road i go down doesnt even exist on the map for some reason and its not even new

bestofme21 · 26/01/2022 23:45

It is confusing as there are no road markings, but the photos attached prove this is a two way street.

Top left is used as explained in conjunction with bottom left. So the sign says traffic turns left ahead into a one way system.

Bottom right is the sign for one way traffic road.

Your detective skills are wasted on this thread 😅.
ChiefWiggumsBoy · 27/01/2022 01:36

I've copied the other pictures from the app. Doesnt look wide enough to be a 2 way street

ROFL. I regularly drive down this road - similar situation it becomes one way at the end. Where are you driving that it’s only lovely wide boulevards with lines down the middle?!

(Yes you are right OP. I’d shout back to them ‘FROM THERE IT IS!’)

It seems you are right OP, if there is no no entry sign. I have a similar problem - main road with row of shops and narrow side street off it. Half way along the short narrow street it widens and there is a private car park for flats. There is also a small amount of public spaces here and as well as a handful of spaces along the length of the road. After the flats parking the road narrows further (impossible for 2 cars to pass on this final bit) and exits in to a supermarket car park. There is a no entry sign from the supermarket car park to road. It's to stop people cutting through to get out. There is however no 'no entry' sign at the entrance end of the street however there IS a give way to exit it at this end. There's also no signage on leaving the private parking or the bit of pubic parking at the wider area to indicate you can only turn one way. Often I'll park on this little street to use one of the shops on the main entrance road then will turn and go back out the same way as continuing along and exiting through the supermarket car park is the wrong direction and due to traffic can add a significant time on to your journey. Without fail someone will come thing in to the street hogging the whole junction instead of leaving room for exiting cars, nearly hit you then start swearing. It's not one way ffs. Nothing indicated it is? Just that the last small stretch is. No one seems to get it. I despair 😆

UPDATE: I emailed the council. They just called me and confirmed I am right, it is two way. The person I spoke to said he's been shouted at driving that way too. They are going to add a two way sign to the street Smile

Hurrah! Vindicated AND actually getting the council to do something about it - best result ever!

Woohoo! Well done. I'm delighted to be wrong and wish I could be there when you triumphantly tell the annoying drivers that you are right and they are wrong.

Well done. Happy driving.

Brilliant - but worrying all the ignoramuses who claimed otherwise on here.
