Driving the wrong way down a one way street? (Diagram)

NC for this as I'm embarrassed if I'm driving the wrong way down a one way street every day.

The attached road sign is what the angry drivers see when I am coming the other way. They wind their windows down and yell at me that it's a one way street. This happens most days.

I think the sign means they need to turn left at the top of the street and the street itself isn't one way.

There isn't a no entry ⛔️ sign when I drive from my house and down this street.

AIBU to drive this way? I've been shouted and sworn at so many times I'm starting to think the sign must mean the street is one way.

Diagram also attached.

Because I know the road

TruffleShuffles · 26/01/2022 17:49

I presume there is a no entry sign at the end of the one way system/street to the right of your house? If there is one there then I don’t see why there would be another one by your house on that corner as there has been no change.

If that part you drive down is two way I would expect a sign to show traffic is two way and as there isn’t I would presume it’s one way.

choosername1234 · 26/01/2022 17:49

@RandomLondoner

What are the road markings when you get to the end of the road? Is there a give way line/sign or a stop line/sign? This will tell you

If it's a one way, there needs to be a way to tell where OP enters it, an indication (official or not) at the end is of no use to anyone.

Even if it's meant to be one way, if there are no explicit signs saying so, it isn't.

No, not no use at all. If vehicles are expected to be exiting the road there will be lines indicating either give way or stop. Lots of posters had asked about the start of the street so I suggested the "end" may provide clues too
TheChemicalMother · 26/01/2022 17:51

@daimbarsatemydogsbone - the poster also lives there!

OneWayDriver · 26/01/2022 17:51

@mrbeanisatwat that's what all the angry drivers say to me.

So where exactly is it indicated that it's one way then?
sanbeiji · 26/01/2022 17:51

Based on the diagram in the OP :
The one way left turn means that you MUST turn left.

If there isn’t a no-entry sign when YOU turn in … it isn’t one way!

SamphiretheStickerist · 26/01/2022 17:51

@mrbeanisatwat

Because I know the road
Then you are possibly one of the drivers adding to the confusion.

This isn't always true - I know of several intersections of two way streets where priority is unmarked - in fact I was taken to one in my driving tuition, to point it out.

There isn’t a no entry sign anywhere near OP house where street starts.

Where are the signs and markings showing it's one way then?

and is it Brighton/Hove as I suspected?

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 26/01/2022 17:55

OP I know where you are and used to live in the bottom square. You are right and that section is two way BUT would only ever be used that way by the people living in your side of the square. Anyone driving through there (using it as a rat run) wouldn't normally get people coming down there towards them and assume it is one way.

If the whole stretch was one way then the sign would be at the bottom of the road. There would also be a no entry sign at the too. There is neither.

Yea, unmarked junctions are a thing search YouTube and you’ll see loads of driving instructors explaining it
Whingasaurus · 26/01/2022 18:00

I used to live near there and the OP is technically correct but honestly why would you? It causes chaos for other drivers and normally no one does it

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 26/01/2022 18:00

I've doubled checked on street view and for cars coming around your square and turning left into that stretch of road, there are no restrictions. Definitely two way.

SamphiretheStickerist · 26/01/2022 18:01

Because it's legal and she wants to?

toppkatz · 26/01/2022 18:03

That one way sign halfway down the street is to tell drivers that they have to turn left into a one way street at the end.

What sign is there at the entrance to the street before they turn up it?

MovingSwiftlyOn · 26/01/2022 18:03

@daimbarsatemydogsbone it certainly has a feel of Brighton/Hove Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 26/01/2022 18:04

On a one way street I would expect to see blue instruction signs, either circular or rectangle at the point of entering the zone and no entry for potentially entering traffic at the exit point.

Unmarked junctions do exist, and drivers should be prepared to give way. A road marking would be more likely to set out an unusual layout.

Probably worth contacting your local councillor for clarification of the layout as it's a point of road safety.

LookItsMeAgain · 26/01/2022 18:04

@OneWayDriver

Ok this is the view of the road from the direction of my house (the way I drive along it)
So are you driving towards these parked vehicles in the opposite direction to how they are parked?
LookItsMeAgain · 26/01/2022 18:06

[quote dementedpixie]@LookItsMeAgain why are you shouting at me?

Apologies @dementedpixie. Your post appeared directly below mine and was responding to what I thought were the questions I had posted.
I wasn't actually shouting at you but when I read your post I was a bit frustrated (as I did think it was in reply to my one). Sorry about those crossed wires.

You are incorrect - there's no need to indicate a "reversion" to two way where a one way section ends.

Section 4.9 C1 of the road signs manual refers - there needs to be a no entry sign at the top end of the road where OP enters. No sign = no restriction.

Oh hey neighbour! This is reassuring to hear.

You will also appreciate what a ballache it would be to drive the other 'rat run' way.

Should I keep driving down the street and just accept the abuse?! WWYD?

How much more difficult is it to just drive the other way?

OneWayDriver · 26/01/2022 18:09

@loretta81

Extremely congested, often a queue for the car park which I get trapped in, not the way I want to go...
