To walk alone for 45mins at 8pm?

Just that really.

Told my DH I would be walking home from work tonight, finish 8pm.

It takes around 40-45mins. There are no busses at this time. He feels I should get a taxi, mainly due to the attacks on women that have been published in the media recently. I've said I can't justify the expense and am more than happy walking, usually do if it's daylight. We live in a holiday resort area but it's along 3 fairly busy main roads so won't be in any isolated areas.

He usually collects me but he has covid so can't collect me and I don't drive.

AIBU to think its fine to walk home at this time of the day in the dark or should I follow his advise and get a taxi and claw the cost back elsewhere?

10000% taxi

GrapefruitPink · 24/01/2022 14:10

Taxi for me

RuthW · 24/01/2022 14:11

I wouldn't

Porcupineintherough · 24/01/2022 14:13

Well surely it depends on where you live and the areas you'd have to walk through? I'd happily walk home from work in the dark because there are well lit, busy routes that would take me most of the way , then a safe suburban area. Is that the case for you?

redtshirt50 · 24/01/2022 14:13

I’d walk if I knew the route and felt safe.

You could be in a car accident in a taxi, so neither are without risks

KirstenBlest · 24/01/2022 14:14

Is it about 3.5 miles? i have done about that in the dark from work. Some was on an unlit road.

You walk more slowly when tired. Wear a coat and trainers and make sure you have your phone on you

Coughee · 24/01/2022 14:14

I'd walk. I wouldn't if it was isolated, I'd not wear headphones or anything to stay aware of my surroundings but other than that I refuse to live in dear and not do normal everyday things.

RockAndHardPlace1 · 24/01/2022 14:14

No. Get a taxi. Be safe please.

Tee20x · 24/01/2022 14:14

I'd walk it

loloballlolo · 24/01/2022 14:14

Depends if there will be other people around! It's not a long walk but if you're somewhere it will be quiet with few other pedestrians then I would think twice.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 24/01/2022 14:15

Wouldn't occur to me to question it. Take the dog out every night for about the same time. Might be different if I lived somewhere else though.

Coughee · 24/01/2022 14:15

Live in fear obvs not dear.

imamumgetmeoutofhere · 24/01/2022 14:15

Relatively safe area I'd say, we don't hear of much trouble here, at least not in the area I live in.

I don't know now as he's made me worry Confused

If you are happy to do it, you should do it. Part of being an adult is taking risks as you see fit.

dalrympy · 24/01/2022 14:16

I would. But I think I'm your case as your DH normally collects you, he will be feeling responsible and worrying.

purpleme12 · 24/01/2022 14:16

God I walk home from work at this time all the time!

SmallestInTheClass · 24/01/2022 14:16

I’d definitely be happy to walk that, given its busy roads. You can always use a tracking app so he can see where you are.

yikesanotherbooboo · 24/01/2022 14:17

I'd walk

lurker101 · 24/01/2022 14:19

If it’s only a 45 minute walk along busy-ish main roads I would do it without a doubt. Probably wouldn’t walk through a park on my own at that time, but definitely along roads etc. close to home

Classicblunder · 24/01/2022 14:19

I walk in the dark all the time, don't think twice about it.

In a country where it's dark so early in winter, it seems very life limiting not to

TheChemicalMother · 24/01/2022 14:19

I'd walk. This wouldn't worry me at all.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 24/01/2022 14:19

8pm along busy roads? I wouldn't give it a second thought. If your dh is worried you can talk to him all the way.

LordEmsworth · 24/01/2022 14:20

I wouldn't think twice about walking through a residential area, at a time when many people will be at home and awake, with someone expecting me at a certain time, in the dark.

takingmytimeonmyride · 24/01/2022 14:20

I would, I do. My town is quite a rough area, but busy enough at that time of night that I feel safe going out.

Do people really not go out in the early evening when it's dark?

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 24/01/2022 14:21

@Xiomara22

10000% taxi
Do you live in a dangerous area or never go out after dark? People are out on the pavements at all hours, walking dogs, jogging getting places it seems extremely limiting to be so scared
