wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

@HRMtheQuern

Right, the next person to post a passive aggresive patronising comment will be reported. Because it's largely the reason why I can't enjoy using mumsnet quite so much. I've only ever had cheap jeans not nice ones out of a sale so this was meant to be special for me but thanks a lot.
I’m not sure being ‘passive aggressive’ in a comment is a reportable offence. Otherwise half of posters would be banned! As far as the jeans go, you got a pair of jeans at a bargain price because they’re old stock. The most your MIL should offer to pay is what you paid for them. Not what they may cost in a different shop!
RealBecca · 21/01/2022 13:18

I think you're getting a bit of an unfair pasting OP. Why should you expect and plan around someone else's bloody dog. It shouldn't have been jumping up on you as you walked in. If its that excitable she should close the hallway or shut dog in kitchen when answering.

No i dont think you can ask for the full cost new and I think you'll have to write it off as an unfortunate thing. But I'd be pretty fucking cross of treated myself, spending more than normal and then it being ruined through no fault of my own. Id probably avoid going round or having the dog over again.

Get divorced and find a man who is either an orphan or whose parents are dog-haters.

Well I would be pissed off too! When I was dating DH my then future MIL damaged my diesel shirt I just bought a week ago for £80. She had to buy me a new one. Sorry but I don’t find money on a tree. She should read the label how to wash delicate clothing. Instead she showed a white shirt with her hubs tear black clothing. It came out dark grey!
How did she damage the shirt? And no, she didn’t HAVE to buy you a new one…
SweetPotatoDumpling · 21/01/2022 13:20

Oh dear OP, I don't think Mumsnet is the place for you really my lovely.

Scarlettpixie · 21/01/2022 13:20

Yabu to visit people with dogs or small children in your best/delicate clothes.

Yabu to expect your MIL to reimburse you what you paid, let alone full price replacements.

Yabu to threaten to report people who don’t agree with you!

Booboobibles · 21/01/2022 13:20

This is just one of those things in life that you just have to accept. In a way I understand, because 30 years ago I’d probably have been annoyed too (although I’d never have asked for the money) but that’s because I had ocd and was unhealthily obsessed with my appearance.

The main point i’d like to make though is that I never thought through the consequences of my actions….is it more important to have a new pair of jeans, or to have a good relationship with your MIL. Even if you don’t like like/love MIL and we’re looking at it from a totally rational perspective, you will probably be better off financially if you apologise and acknowledge to MIL that you were being a bit silly.

givememykeys · 21/01/2022 13:21

@Chely

I'd tell you to piss off
And people wonder why MILs get all the hate on here, are you always so aggressive and rude?
girlmom21 · 21/01/2022 13:21

If it's your MIL's dog you knew the dog existed and you knew how the dog behaved. If you were worried about the dog causing damage, you shouldn't have gone to her house wearing the jeans.

Scarlettpixie · 21/01/2022 13:21

Oh and yabu to post before you even know of they came out ok after washing!

AndItDoesntSeemToMatter · 21/01/2022 13:21

@getsanta

I don't get these replies? Why shouldn't the dog owner pay for damage? I would.
Because on here dogs can do no wrong apparently
Spreadingtheword · 21/01/2022 13:21

“GrapefruitPink
You'd have to look at them to see the scratches

I'll just leave this here”

Thanks, I can see her comment if I look at it.

Fairylightsongs · 21/01/2022 13:21

Oh cotton jeans 🥴

Anyway. Maybe they are coated? I’d see that happening.

arethereanyleftatall · 21/01/2022 13:22

@DropYourSword
😂I've also just googled otton jeans. #mustgetmorehobbies. Google logarithms will be going berserk with this surge of requests for otton jeans.

DeadSouth · 21/01/2022 13:23

No matter how much I’ve paid for jeans would I even consider asking the dog owner to replace them. This wasn’t a dog in the street you couldn’t have predicted he’d jumping up, you obviously know MIL’s dogs nature by now enough to know if they get excited and jump up don’t wear something you love.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 21/01/2022 13:23

Have you actually asked for them to be replaced?! Blimey.

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 21/01/2022 13:23

Call the non emergency police line.

This out of control dog JUMPED on you to say hello and RUINED THE ASTHETIC OF YOUR JEANS.

The stress of being unsure whether it will wash out enough is taking the special new feeling away.

If that's not a crime I don't know what is.

Flowers op and have some new 👖 too.

Are you OP after a name change?

Why did you ask MiL to do your washing of your brand new best expensive white shirt?

OP - get over yourself. Animals jump up and scratch things. You knew there was a dog in the house so your look out.

Elsiebear90 · 21/01/2022 13:24

I’ve handled a lot of dogs and I’ve never had them ruin a pair of jeans just by scratching them, that doesn’t sound right at all.

Regardless, it was an accident, these things happen, I’m not going to charge my friends for the chair and rug their 2 year old stained by throwing her food around when she came over for dinner, you need to accept it and move on, it was not malicious or neglectful on your MIL’s part, she couldn’t have predicted the dog was doing to jump up you if it’s something you said they don’t normally do.

I did the same and Google automatically corrected it to Otto jeans. I had never heard of the brand before!

countrygirl99 · 21/01/2022 13:25

Stick to supermarket jeans next time. Mine have been jumped all over by assorted dogs, I've chambered through hedges, done the gardening and even fallen over in slimey mud getting the horse in with zero damage. The ones you bought sound a rip off.

NewPapaGuinea · 21/01/2022 13:25

If they weren’t on sale you wouldn’t have bought them and they wouldn’t have been ruined. YBVU to expect full price replacements. Would you expect similar if they were from a charity shop?

flippertyop · 21/01/2022 13:25

You are being a dick. You were in her house why should she pay for them

DisappearingGirl · 21/01/2022 13:25

I actually think this is an interesting question about whether people should have to pay to replace stuff (irrespective of the specifics about dog and jeans).

I do think if people choose to wear really expensive stuff out and about, that's their risk to some extent.

For example, say I accidentally bumped into my friend and spilt some tea on them or something. I'm a polite person so if it couldn't be washed out I'd probably offer to pay. BUT if they said it was a designer item worth hundreds of pounds, I'd be pretty pissed off if I was expected to pay for that - I'd think it's a risk you take when wearing expensive stuff.
