wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

All the mad dog owners will be on soon, telling you that you should be grateful that the dog jumped up on you …

Pedalpushers · 21/01/2022 12:52

She certainly shouldn't have to pay more for them you did! Maybe a small amount but they aren't ruined and so a full replacement isn't appropriate, just because you feel they are now less special.

ClariceQuiff · 21/01/2022 12:52

So you bought them for, say, £15 on clearance but you want your relative to pay, say, £50 because that's what they cost full-price?

That's unreasonable. The most you could expect would be reimbursement of what you spent, and that would be very generous IMO.

lunar1 · 21/01/2022 12:52

I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures of the jeans!

newnameforthis76 · 21/01/2022 12:52

Unless your jeans are inexplicably made of silk they have not been permanently damaged by a dog jumping up at you. Jeans are literally designed to be tough and hard-wearing.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 21/01/2022 12:54

Unless your jeans are very obvioisly damaged, no she shouldnt pay.

Looking forward to the pictures.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/01/2022 12:54

Catch yourself on.

GrapefruitPink · 21/01/2022 12:54

Find it bizarre to even ask tbh.

How does DH feel?

getsanta · 21/01/2022 12:54

@Laiste not sure I'd actively make a huge deal about it, but would be Hmm if they didn't offer. If an animal of mine damaged someone's new jeans I would absolutely offer to pay (as I said in my post) As between the OP and the relative, it's the relative's fault.

arethereanyleftatall · 21/01/2022 12:54

How much were the jeans op?

Laiste · 21/01/2022 12:55

Yeah, any jeans which can be marked forever my a dog jumping up certainly aren't worth paying a lot for.

Why do you think she should pay you more than what you paid? Or are we going down the legal 'like for like replacement cost' route? With your actual MIL. For a pair of jeans.

Chloemol · 21/01/2022 12:56

They are cheap jeans, from a factory warehouse, you got 3 pairs

Get over yourself

jelly79 · 21/01/2022 12:56

Oh stop.

You don't even know the extent of the damage yet as they are still in the wash so you are effectively wanting to sue your MIL for the way that you feel about your jeans because they don't feel special

You bought 3 pairs and a heavily discounted price. And you want her to pay more than what you paid for them.

Absolutely ridiculous to expect this.

FelicityPike · 21/01/2022 12:56

Did you get new pants too or just jeans?

VelvetChairGirl · 21/01/2022 12:56

@arethereanyleftatall

No op, I wouldn't ask anyone to pay any damage for their dog jumping on me. It must have made for a very awkward conversation when you asked them to tbh, it's unusual. Unless we're talking pairs of jeans worth hundreds of pounds and you're on the bread line?
i googled as I have never heard of em, £220 for a pair of bog standard jeans Grin
Pixilicious · 21/01/2022 12:56

I think the relative should pay as their dog has damaged your property.

DirtyDancing · 21/01/2022 12:57

Grin this isn't real right?

Mamamamasaurus · 21/01/2022 12:57

"they don't feel as special"

You poor lamb. Here you go: Biscuit

Fuck me, just when I thought I'd heard it all 🤦🏻‍♀️

HRMtheQuern · 21/01/2022 12:57

Well I thought it was nice to get otherwise expensive jeans on a sale that have now been damaged that I don't want to pay to get full price because someone elses dog damaged mine

I'd tell you to piss off

VelvetChairGirl · 21/01/2022 12:58

@Letsallscreamatthesistene

Unless your jeans are very obvioisly damaged, no she shouldnt pay.

Looking forward to the pictures.

Lots of people pay good money for brand new damaged jeans. (and I will never understand that)
Laiste · 21/01/2022 12:58

@getsanta well, i just personally wouldn't ASK for money from my MIL for a couple of scratches (at worst) on a pair of jeans. The OP has asked for this money.

If MIL offered i wouldn't take it.

GrapefruitPink · 21/01/2022 12:58

You'd have to look at them to see the scratches

I'll just leave this here

jelly79 · 21/01/2022 12:58

OP - out of interest what was the conversation with MIL and how did she respond?

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 21/01/2022 12:59

Wtaf?
Dog. Jeans. Notoriously hard-wearing garment.
It's embarassing to even think to ask your MiL to pay.
