wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

I have a dog. I would offer to replace and wouldn't enquire about the price if it was a close friend or family member.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 21/01/2022 12:59

You might find that the dye has evened out over the marks once they come out of the wash. See what they look like before you go any further.

Pedalpushers · 21/01/2022 13:00

But you bought 3 pairs? You have no need to get new ones.

BadLad · 21/01/2022 13:00

This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special.

I won't sleep tonight for worrying about that.

Good one, OP.

Deadringer · 21/01/2022 13:01

They sound crap if they marked that easily. You have 3 pairs, just wear them as your every day ones and keep the other two locked in a safe for good wear.

HRMtheQuern · 21/01/2022 13:01

Right, the next person to post a passive aggresive patronising comment will be reported. Because it's largely the reason why I can't enjoy using mumsnet quite so much. I've only ever had cheap jeans not nice ones out of a sale so this was meant to be special for me but thanks a lot.

@Chloemol

They are cheap jeans, from a factory warehouse, you got 3 pairs

Get over yourself

They might be fakes, if a pair of £200 jeans cant stand up to a single pawing from an excitable dog.

and I'm no dog lover I dont understand why anyone wants a dog but I understand why people want £200 jeans even less when your avarage joy wont care if your jeans cost £20 or £200.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 21/01/2022 13:02

But you bought 3 pairs, yes? @HRMtheQuern and the damage is only noticeable if you're actually looking for it? I think you've a bit of a cheek asking for them to be replaced at full price. If they were actually ripped I still think YABU as you've two other identical pairs.

iklboo · 21/01/2022 13:02

Of course they won't pay full price. You didn't.

HRMtheQuern · 21/01/2022 13:02

I'll see what they look like once they're out of the wash, thanks

Turn them inside out, wash. Dogs don’t scratch fabric and mark it. A cat….now that’s different.

ZorbaTheHoarder · 21/01/2022 13:03

How do you normally get on with MIL, OP?

(before doggyjeansgate)?

Gonnagetgoing · 21/01/2022 13:04

Accident - if the jeans were that special then save them for best and not for when dogs visit and can scratch them.

xILikeJamx · 21/01/2022 13:04

I feel a classic coming on...

Thinkbiglittleone · 21/01/2022 13:05

Have they been washed since the incident and they are still damaged?
I would make the company aware that there jeans can not withstand a dog jumping up on them.

I would be very surprised if our dog jumping up could cause such damage to a pair of trousers, simply by jumping up so I am too looking forwards to seeing the photo.

If it were us, yes we would probably offer to give you your £15 back off our dog had damaged your clothes, but knowing we had a dog, I probably would advise you buy/wear better quality clothing before revisiting.

You mean you're not happy as posters aren't agreeing with you....

And I couldn't make sense of your OP so no clue what your issue is but you sound like a petulant child

mrsm43s · 21/01/2022 13:07

I think that if a dog jumping up at your new jeans has caused damage to the jeans that makes them unwearable, then you need to return them to the seller for a refund as they are not fit for purpose.

If they are intact and wearable, but just not pristine (so as you'd expect after a few wears) and you have 2 other pairs, then just keep this pair for day to day, and use one of the other pairs for "best" if it bothers you that much.

The absolute max you can expect your MILrelative to reimburse you is the value of a second hand pair of jeans that were bought for the price you paid for them. Because that is what has been damaged. So probably £10 max (check your local charity shop for price guide).

Toomuch2do · 21/01/2022 13:07

Did you forget to wrap yourself in a giant protective plastic bubble before leaving the house?

Grin Thank you, I needed a laugh Grin

getsanta · 21/01/2022 13:07

Wtaf?
Dog. Jeans. Notoriously hard-wearing garment.

What does it matter if they are hard-wearing? The OP says they are damaged (can only take her at her word).

People with dogs that jump on people need to be prepared to cover damage caused by them.

Dora33 · 21/01/2022 13:07

If I was your relative, I would offer to refund you what you had paid for them. Would think you were being cheeky to expect to pay you more than they had cost you.
Though I wouldn't expect my parent or parents inlaw to give me the money in such a situation. Wouldnt feel right to take the money & I definitely wouldn't have asked for it.

Yummypumpkin · 21/01/2022 13:07

You've either had a very hard or a very easy life whereby you are finding this so traumatic and feel a need to seek compensation.

I encourage you to prioritise a good relationship with your relative. And wear one of the other two new pairs of jeans you have.

1940s · 21/01/2022 13:08

You've still got two identical other pairs am I right?
If you had been in vintage Chanel on your wedding day and the dog jumped up - then absolutely. A big standard pair of jeans that you own 3 pairs of is just standard wear and tear to me

RobertaFirmino · 21/01/2022 13:08

What brand were the jeans?

PickAChew · 21/01/2022 13:08

Jeans with denim that is ruined by an excitable dog don't deserve to be called jeans.

Chishnfips · 21/01/2022 13:09

People pay a lot of money for the ripped jeans look. You've got the authentic version for nothing.
