wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

I couldn't get worked up over this. It wasn't done on purpose. You could have just as easily fallen over and ripped/scuffed them.

It's just a pair of jeans - I would not fall out with a relative (that I liked enough to visit!) over a pair of jeans

@HRMtheQuern

Right, the next person to post a passive aggresive patronising comment will be reported. Because it's largely the reason why I can't enjoy using mumsnet quite so much. I've only ever had cheap jeans not nice ones out of a sale so this was meant to be special for me but thanks a lot.
🤣
SemperIdem · 21/01/2022 13:27

But they are jeans - designed to be hard wearing Confused

NoVaxDjokovic · 21/01/2022 13:27

If a pair of jeans can be so badly damaged (yet not at all) by a dogs nails, then I’d bet they are fake.

Report away.

You wouldn't pay full price for the jeans and potentially bought knock offs.

But you want mil to pay full price?

Yep patronising and being passive aggressive are certainly against MN rules. I'm sure they will delete anyone who offends you, OP.

Sarcasm, however, is allowed.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 21/01/2022 13:28

They must be really shit jeans if I'm honest. My supermarket ones don't mark that easy.

Needrichangemynameagain · 21/01/2022 13:28

@Soontobe60 she put it the washer with her husband and brothers clothes, which were all greasy dirty dark clothes ( car mechanic clothes)
I still can’t understand why should mix white clothes with dark ..

arethereanyleftatall · 21/01/2022 13:29

Ah, well found @MananaTomorrow
Ok. So maybe £60 new. So, at a guess, we have ...£15 discounted warehouse price jeans *possibly ever so slightly damaged (tbc post wash) by known dog. I think I'd let this go op, and focus on the joy you get from the other two pairs.

WonderfulYou · 21/01/2022 13:29

Don’t spend above your means.

Your jeans will get damaged sooner or later and you can’t try and get your money back for every tiny mark.

If you are going to be worried about wearing something in case it gets damaged - then don’t buy it.

theleafandnotthetree · 21/01/2022 13:29

@ExtraOnion

All the mad dog owners will be on soon, telling you that you should be grateful that the dog jumped up on you …
🤣 absolutely, a thank you card might even be in order!
nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 21/01/2022 13:30

I'd give you back what you paid for them if it didn't come out in the wash but I've never seen jeans that can be marked by a dog jumping up.

My cheapo supermarket ones are years old with not a mark and I have 2 dogs. I'd be complaining about jeans that expensive being that fragile.

You'd be way out of order expecting her to replace them at full price when you didn't even pay full price.

AssignedBlobbyAtBirth · 21/01/2022 13:30

I hope you are going to ask for compensation for the passive aggressive comments. Hurt feelings are bound to be worth more than not ripped jeans

Applesonthelawn · 21/01/2022 13:30

@GrapefruitPink

I'd take them to a small claims court
🤣🤣
Somethingsnappy · 21/01/2022 13:31

Can you describe the damage a little more clearly? I can't picture it. Do you mean scratches where the fabric has caught and pulled?

NewPapaGuinea · 21/01/2022 13:31

@DropYourSword

Ironically, those look like they’re covered in paw prints
Iamkmackered1979 · 21/01/2022 13:31

You’ve got 2 other pairs?
Use the ‘scratched’ ones for day to day and keep the other 2 from visits to people with vicious clawed dogs.

Can’t say I’ve ever had a dog wreck jeans, I’ve puppy walked for guide dogs so loads of puppies, my sister is a dog trainer so around many dogs inc my own! Jeans are all intact - would avoid leggings or tights near them mind you. I’d be more wary of cats myself. They can’t be very hard wearing or thick jeans? More fabric than Jean?

MrsPotatoHead22 · 21/01/2022 13:31

You could politely ask her to pay for dry cleaning but not to replace unless there's a hole in it?

BUT
Regardless of whether the dog hasn't ever jump on you before this incident, there was always a chance that dog would jump on you because after all, he/she's a dog. You wore expensive jeans knowing you were going to a house with a dog, at your own risk.

RitaFires · 21/01/2022 13:32

It's annoying when new clothes get dirty or damaged but I think it's a bit much to expect your MIL to pay full price for replacing a still wearable pair of jeans that you didn't pay full price for. I think you may have burned a bridge with your in-laws, this is a story that will be told to everyone.

It would be different if they had ripped but even then I don't think you could justify asking MIL to pay full price just get a discounted pair from a similar quality brand.

Rooroobear · 21/01/2022 13:32

Hah well be prepared to report half these comments op! If you can’t take the replies then don’t post.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 21/01/2022 13:33

@PleasantBirthday

Relative is mil

Well of course she is. Who else would it be?

LOL'd
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 21/01/2022 13:34

This has Daily Mail written ALL over it

DoubleTweenQueen · 21/01/2022 13:35

Has anyone seen the vid of the guy walking through the train carriages and bumping into walls, with different response according to birth decade? Well, that really.

Apply a really nice bit of appliqué, or otherwise patch the affected area Hmm
